As he swiftly advanced in battle, mace in hand, Pārtha cut Citrarśena’s iron mace into seven pieces with his arrows.
Seeing his mace shattered in many parts by the valiant archer’s arrows, he concealed himself by his magic and continued to fight Pāṇḍava.
All the divine weapons he employed were countered by Arjuna with celestial missiles.
Though restrained by those weapons by the great-souled Arjuna, the powerful king of the Gandharvas then vanished by his magic.
Perceiving him invisible yet attacking, Arjuna struck at him with sky-ranging arrows empowered by divine mantras.
Then, enraged, Arjuna performed the slaying of the invisible, adopting many forms and relying on the sound as his guide.
Assailed by those weapons by the great-souled Arjuna, his dear friend then revealed himself.
Citrarśena then spoke: 'Know me as your friend in battle.' And recognizing Citrarśena as his friend, Arjuna was astonished.
Then the bull among the Pāṇḍavas withdrew the weapon he had released.
Seeing Dhanaṃjaya withdraw his weapon, all the Pāṇḍavas recalled their fleeing horses and their bows.
Citrarśena, Bhīma, Savyasācin, and the twins, after inquiring about each other’s welfare, remained standing on their chariots.
Then Arjuna, laughing, said this to Citrarśena, the mighty archer of great brilliance, in the midst of the Gandharva army:
'What is your purpose, hero, in restraining the Kauravas? And for what reason has Suyodhana, with his wives, been captured?'
'This intention of the wicked one present there is known to Indra, O Dhanaṃjaya, regarding the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra and Karṇa.'
'Knowing you to be dwelling in the forest and suffering undeservedly, he wished to see those in adversity who were once in prosperity, and those who are unstable.'
'These men came to mock the illustrious Draupadī; knowing their intention, the lord of the gods spoke to me.'
Go, bind Duryodhana and his ministers, and bring them here; but you must protect Dhananjaya in battle, along with his brothers.
He is your dear friend and disciple, that Pandava; at the command of the king of the gods, I have come here swiftly.
This wicked one is now bound; I will go to the abode of the gods and take this evil-hearted man away by the order of the wielder of the thunderbolt.
Release Suyodhana, our brother, O Citrarshena, if you wish to please me and fulfill the command of King Yudhishthira.
This sinful one, ever corrupt, does not deserve release; he has insulted King Yudhishthira, Krishna, and Dhananjaya.
This is not the wish of Kunti’s son Yudhishthira; the king, knowing righteousness, has heard and you may act as you desire.
All of them then approached King Yudhishthira and, having come before him, reported everything that had happened.
Ajatashatru, hearing the words of the Gandharva at that time, released all those Gandharvas and praised them.
Then Citrarshena spoke these words with a firm voice: 'Release Suyodhana, his younger brother, ministers, and wives.'
Hearing the words of Citrarshena, the Gandharvas quickly released the king, who was bound with iron fetters.
With his wives, followers, ministers, and all who were caught in the net, they all, freed, went near Yudhishthira.
Fallen and ashamed, they stood with faces downcast; Yudhishthira, seeing them thus, regarded them with compassion.
By good fortune, none of you, though strong and mighty, have harmed this ill-behaved son of Dhritarashtra, along with his ministers, kin, and friends.
This favor, O sky-dweller, has been done for me; my family has not been disgraced by the release of this wicked one.
