As Bhimasena spoke thus, in a harsh tone, the king addressed him, saying, 'This is not the time for harsh words.'
How could you speak thus to the Kauravas, who have come to us in fear, seeking refuge, and have fallen into misfortune, O son?
Disputes and quarrels do arise among kinsmen, O Vrikodara, and enmities are common; yet the law of kinship does not perish.
But when an outsider attacks the family, the noble do not tolerate such an affront from without.
This evil-minded one knows that we have long dwelled here; thus, he has insulted us and committed this wrong.
Because Duryodhana was seized by the Gandharva in battle by force, and because the women were violated by outsiders, our family is as good as destroyed.
Rise up, O tigers among men, for the protection of those who have sought refuge and for the sake of your lineage; make yourselves ready without delay.
Arjuna, the two sons of Madri, and you, Bhima the unconquered—release, O tigers among men, Suyodhana who is being carried away.
These chariots, O tigers among men, adorned with all kinds of weapons, with pure golden banners, belong to the sons of Dhritarashtra.
Mount these ever-ready chariots with resounding clamor, which are equipped with weapons and driven by charioteers like Indrasena and others.
Taking these up, exert yourselves with determination to fight the Gandharvas in battle for the liberation of Suyodhana.
When faced with insult from others, we are one hundred and five; but in mutual conflict, we are only five against your hundred.
Any kshatriya who comes here seeking refuge should be protected to the utmost of one's ability—how much more so you, O Vrikodara!
Thus addressed, the son of Kunti, his eyes reddened with anger and recalling former enmity, spoke again.
Once before, Yudhishthira, this wicked one tried to burn us in the house of lac; but we were protected then by fate, O hero.
He mixed deadly poison, Kalakuta, into my food, O Bharata, and after binding me with creepers, cast me into the Ganga, O lord.
Having reached the netherworld, I then saw Vasuki, and after seeing him, O king, I returned again to the earth.
At the time of the dice game, O son of Kunti, many wrongs were committed, including the grievous insult to Draupadi, the seizing of her hair, and the disrobing in the midst of the assembly.
Having seized our kingdom, O king, he spoke harsh words to us; Suyodhana now reaps the fruit of the sins committed earlier.
It is for us alone to subdue the son of Dhritarashtra; if another does it, it is because we desire friendship. The Gandharva is only being helpful, O king, do not be disheartened.
Meanwhile, O king, Suyodhana was seized by Citraratha and, being led away, wailed in great distress.
Yudhishthira, mighty-armed, best upholder of dharma, together with his sons and wives, was forcibly taken by the Gandharva.
O mighty-armed son of Pandu, bringer of glory to the Kauravas, best of all upholders of dharma, Yudhishthira the illustrious has been seized by the Gandharva; protect him, O tiger among men.
This one is leading away your mighty-armed brother, having bound him, along with Dushasana, Durvishaha, Durmukha, and also Durjaya.
The Gandharvas have bound us and are taking away all our wives; pursue me quickly and protect us, O best of men!
Let the two sons of Yama, armed, follow me for my protection; such great fame has come to the Kuru lineage—dispel the Gandharvas, Pandavas, by your valor!
Hearing the lament of the Kaurava, who was crying out in distress, Yudhishthira was filled with compassion and became agitated.
Then Yudhishthira spoke again to Bhimasena: 'Strive diligently for the release of Suyodhana.'
Who among the noble, when urged, would not risk his life to help, seeing even an enemy, hands joined, seeking refuge?
Granting a boon, giving a kingdom, the birth of a son, and the release of an enemy—these three, Pandavas, and this one, are equal in difficulty.
