But the Gandharvas, with an unimaginable rain of arrows, surrounded Duryodhana's chariot from all sides, intent on killing him.
With arrows, they shattered his yoke, shafts, armor, banner, charioteer, horses, triple-banded axle, all into pieces like sesame seeds.
Seeing Duryodhana, son of Dhritarashtra, deprived of his chariot and fallen to the ground, the mighty-armed Citraratha rushed forward and seized him alive.
Binding his arms with a rope, Citraratha, the mighty-armed, lifted the great chariot-warrior onto his own chariot and roared aloud.
When he was captured, O king, the Gandharvas surrounded Duhshasana, who was standing on his chariot, and seized him from all sides.
Some Gandharvas took Citraratha and fled, while others seized Vinda, Anuvinda, and all the royal wives.
The army of Dhritarashtra, attacked by the Gandharvas and already routed, then joined with the Pandavas.
All the camp followers, merchants, and those with vehicles and yokes sought refuge with the Pandavas as the king was being led away.
The mighty-armed, well-favored son of Dhritarashtra, powerful as he is, is being carried off by the Gandharvas; O sons of Pritha, pursue after the king.
Duḥśāsana, Durviṣaha, Durmukha, and also Durjaya—all are being bound and taken away by the Gandharvas, along with all the royal women.
Thus, Duryodhana’s ministers, greedy for the throne, cried out in distress; afflicted and dejected, they all approached Yudhishthira.
Seeing those aged ministers of Duryodhana, so troubled and miserable, begging Yudhishthira, Bhimasena spoke to them.
With great effort, having assembled elephants and horses, you acted otherwise; now, as things have turned out differently, this is the result.
What needed to be done by us has been accomplished by the Gandharvas.
This is the result of the evil counsel of that king, addicted to wicked dice, of Duryodhana, who wished to see us in misery.
We have heard that others, enemies of this impotent one, sought to destroy him; but this, done by the Gandharvas before our eyes, is beyond human power.
By fortune, there is at least someone in the world who stands on our side; by whom our burden, while we sat at ease, has been lifted, bringing us comfort.
He, who is eager to see us—emaciated by austerity, enduring cold, wind, and heat, and in distress—wishes to see those in hardship while he himself is secure.
Those who follow the conduct of that unrighteous, wicked-hearted Kaurava now witness his downfall.
Indeed, unrighteousness has been committed by him, as is evident from this event; O sons of Kunti, let me declare this plainly to you: he is devoid of compassion.
As Bhimasena spoke thus, in a harsh tone, the king addressed him, saying, 'This is not the time for harsh words.'
How could you speak thus to the Kauravas, who have come to us in fear, seeking refuge, and have fallen into misfortune, O son?
Disputes and quarrels do arise among kinsmen, O Vrikodara, and enmities are common; yet the law of kinship does not perish.
But when an outsider attacks the family, the noble do not tolerate such an affront from without.
This evil-minded one knows that we have long dwelled here; thus, he has insulted us and committed this wrong.
Because Duryodhana was seized by the Gandharva in battle by force, and because the women were violated by outsiders, our family is as good as destroyed.
Rise up, O tigers among men, for the protection of those who have sought refuge and for the sake of your lineage; make yourselves ready without delay.
Arjuna, the two sons of Madri, and you, Bhima the unconquered—release, O tigers among men, Suyodhana who is being carried away.
These chariots, O tigers among men, adorned with all kinds of weapons, with pure golden banners, belong to the sons of Dhritarashtra.
Mount these ever-ready chariots with resounding clamor, which are equipped with weapons and driven by charioteers like Indrasena and others.
