दुर्योधनश्च तेजस्वी शकुनिश्चापि सौबलः। गन्धर्वान्योधयामासुः समरे भृशविक्षताः
The mighty Duryodhana and also Shakuni, son of Subala, fought against the Gandharvas in battle, though they were grievously wounded.
सर्व एव तु गन्धर्वाः शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः। जिघांसमानाः संरब्धाः कर्णमभ्यद्रवत्रणे
Then all the Gandharvas, by the hundreds and thousands, enraged and intent on killing, rushed at Karna on the battlefield.
असिभिः पट्टसैः शूलैर्गदाभिश्च महाबलाः। सूतपुत्रं जिघांसन्तः समन्तात्पर्यवारयन्
Wielding swords, scimitars, spears, and maces, those powerful warriors surrounded the son of the charioteer from all sides, seeking to slay him.
अन्येऽस्य युगमच्छिन्दन्ध्वजमन्ये न्यपातयन्। ईषामन्ये हयानन्ये सूतमन्ये न्यपातयन्
Some cut his yoke, others brought down his banner, some broke his shafts, others struck down his horses, and yet others felled his charioteer.
अन्ये च्छत्रं वरूथं च बन्धुरं च तथा परे। `अन्ये संचूर्णयामासुश्छत्रे चाक्षौ तथा परे
Some shattered his umbrella and his armor, while others destroyed his beautiful ornaments; still others crushed his umbrella and his chariot wheels.
गन्धर्वा बहुसाहस्रास्तिलशो व्यधमन्रथम् ।। ततो रथादवप्लुत्य सूतपुत्रोऽसिचर्मभृत्
The many thousands of Gandharvas scattered his chariot into pieces like sesame seeds; then the son of the charioteer leapt down from the chariot, taking up sword and shield.
अंसावलम्बितधनुर्धावमानो महाबलः'। विकर्णरथमास्थाय मोक्षायाश्वानचोदयत्
Holding his bow over his shoulder, that mighty warrior ran and, mounting Vikarna's chariot, urged the horses to flee.
गन्धर्वैस्तु महाराज भग्ने कर्णे महारथे। संप्राद्रवच्चमूः सर्वा धार्तराष्ट्रस्य पश्यतः
O great king, when Karna, the great chariot-warrior, was defeated by the Gandharvas, the entire army of Dhritarashtra fled in his sight.
तान्दृष्ट्वा द्रवतः सर्वान्धार्तराष्ट्रान्पराङ्मुखान्। दुर्योधनो महाराजो नासीत्तत्र पराङ्मुखः
Seeing all the sons of Dhritarashtra fleeing, their backs turned, King Duryodhana alone did not turn away.
तामापतन्तीं संप्रेक्ष्य गन्धर्वाणां महाचमूम्। महता शरवर्षेण सोऽभ्यवर्षदरिंदमः
Beholding the vast army of Gandharvas advancing, that subduer of foes showered them with a great rain of arrows.
अचिन्त्य शरवर्षं तु गन्धर्वास्तस्य तं रथम्। दुर्योधनं जिघांसन्तः समन्तात्पर्यवारयन्
But the Gandharvas, with an unimaginable rain of arrows, surrounded Duryodhana's chariot from all sides, intent on killing him.
युगमीषां वरूथं च तथैव ध्वजसारथी। अश्वांस्त्रिवेणुमक्षं च तिलशो व्यधमञ्छरैः
With arrows, they shattered his yoke, shafts, armor, banner, charioteer, horses, triple-banded axle, all into pieces like sesame seeds.
दुर्योधनं चित्रसनो विरथं पतितं भुवि। अभिद्रुस्य महाबाहुर्जीवग्राहमथाग्रहीत्
Seeing Duryodhana, son of Dhritarashtra, deprived of his chariot and fallen to the ground, the mighty-armed Citraratha rushed forward and seized him alive.
तस्य बाहू महाराज बद्ध्वा रज्ज्वा महारथम्। आरोप्यस महाबाहुश्चित्रसेनो ननाद ह
Binding his arms with a rope, Citraratha, the mighty-armed, lifted the great chariot-warrior onto his own chariot and roared aloud.
तस्मिन्गृहीते राजेन्द्र स्थितं दुःशासनं रथे। पर्यगृह्णन्त गन्धर्वाः परिवार्य समन्ततः
When he was captured, O king, the Gandharvas surrounded Duhshasana, who was standing on his chariot, and seized him from all sides.
विधिशतिं चित्रसेनमादायान्ये विदुद्रुवुः। विन्दानुविन्दावपरे राजदारांश्च सर्वशः
Some Gandharvas took Citraratha and fled, while others seized Vinda, Anuvinda, and all the royal wives.
सेनास्तु धार्तराष्ट्रस्य गन्धर्वैः समभिद्रुताः। पूर्वं प्रभग्नैः सहिताः पाण्डवानभ्ययुस्तदा
The army of Dhritarashtra, attacked by the Gandharvas and already routed, then joined with the Pandavas.
शकटापणवेशाश्च यानयुग्यं च सर्वशः। शरणं पाण्डवाञ्जग्मुर्हियमाणे महीपतौ
All the camp followers, merchants, and those with vehicles and yokes sought refuge with the Pandavas as the king was being led away.
प्रियदर्शी महाबाहो धार्तराष्ट्रो महाबलः। गन्धर्वैर्ह्रियते राजा पार्थास्तमनुधावत
The mighty-armed, well-favored son of Dhritarashtra, powerful as he is, is being carried off by the Gandharvas; O sons of Pritha, pursue after the king.
दुःशासनो दुर्विषहो दुर्मुखो दुर्मुखो दुर्जयस्तथा। बद्ध्वा ह्रियन्ते गन्धर्वै राजदाराश्च सर्वशः
Duḥśāsana, Durviṣaha, Durmukha, and also Durjaya—all are being bound and taken away by the Gandharvas, along with all the royal women.
इतिदुर्योधनामात्याः क्रोशन्तो राजगृद्धिनः। आर्ता दीनास्ततः सर्वे युधिष्ठिरमुपागमन्
Thus, Duryodhana’s ministers, greedy for the throne, cried out in distress; afflicted and dejected, they all approached Yudhishthira.
तांस्तथा व्यथितान्दीनान्भिक्षमाणान्युधिष्ठिरम्। वृद्धान्दुर्योधनामात्यान्भीमसेनोऽभ्यभाषत
Seeing those aged ministers of Duryodhana, so troubled and miserable, begging Yudhishthira, Bhimasena spoke to them.
महता हि प्रयत्नेन संनह्य गजवाजिभिः। अन्यथा वर्तमानानामर्थो जातोऽयमन्यथा
With great effort, having assembled elephants and horses, you acted otherwise; now, as things have turned out differently, this is the result.
अस्माभिर्यदनुष्ठेयं गन्धर्वैस्तदनुष्ठितम्
What needed to be done by us has been accomplished by the Gandharvas.
दुर्मन्त्रितमिदं तावद्राज्ञो दुर्द्यूतदेविनः। `दीनान्दुर्योधनस्यास्मान्द्रष्टुकामस्य दुर्मतेः
This is the result of the evil counsel of that king, addicted to wicked dice, of Duryodhana, who wished to see us in misery.
द्वेष्टारमन्ये क्लीवस्य घातयन्तीति नः श्रुतम्। इदं कृतं नः प्रत्यक्षं गन्धर्वैरतिमानुषम्
We have heard that others, enemies of this impotent one, sought to destroy him; but this, done by the Gandharvas before our eyes, is beyond human power.
दिष्ट्या लोके पुमानस्ति कश्चिदस्मन्प्रिये स्थितः। येनास्माकं हृतो भार आसीनानां सुखावहः
By fortune, there is at least someone in the world who stands on our side; by whom our burden, while we sat at ease, has been lifted, bringing us comfort.
शीतवातातपसहांस्तपसा चैव कर्शितान्। समस्थो विषमस्थान्हि द्रष्टुमिच्छति दुर्मतिः
He, who is eager to see us—emaciated by austerity, enduring cold, wind, and heat, and in distress—wishes to see those in hardship while he himself is secure.
अधर्मचारिणस्तस्य कौरव्यस्य दुरात्मनः। ये शीलमनुवर्तन्ति ते पश्यन्ति पराभवम्
Those who follow the conduct of that unrighteous, wicked-hearted Kaurava now witness his downfall.
अधर्मो हि कृतस्तेन येनैतदुपलक्षितम्। अनृशंसास्तु कौन्तेयास्तत्प्रत्यक्षं ब्रवीमि वः
Indeed, unrighteousness has been committed by him, as is evident from this event; O sons of Kunti, let me declare this plainly to you: he is devoid of compassion.
