He struck down many elephants in the forest with his arrows, and in those beautiful places, he had the animals captured.
Enjoying dairy products and other delights, O Bharata, he gazed upon the beautiful forests and groves.
Passing through in order, he reached the sacred Dvaita lake, filled with intoxicated bees and resounding with the cries of peacocks.
That lake was filled with intoxicated bees, crowded with the calls of blue-throated birds, thick with saptacchada trees, and rich with clusters of punnaga trees.
Endowed with great prosperity, like mighty Indra the wielder of the thunderbolt, Yudhishthira, son of Dharma, happened to be there.
He performed a royal sage's sacrifice, O lord of the people, with the prescribed divine and forest offerings, O best of the Kurus.
Together with learned Brahmins dwelling in the forest, the wise king established his camp around that lake, accompanied by Draupadi, his virtuous wife.
Then Duryodhana, along with his brother, ordered his attendants: 'Quickly prepare the playhouses around the lake.'
Saying 'so be it' to the Kaurava, those obedient to his word went to the Dvaita lake, intending to prepare those playhouses.
The foremost of the Dhartarashtras reached the Dvaita lake with his army.
As they approached the entrance to the forest, the Gandharvas blocked their way; for the king of the Gandharvas, accompanied by his hosts, had already arrived there from Kubera's abode, O lord of the people.
With groups of Apsaras and the sons of the gods, all fond of pleasure and play, he had occupied that lake.
Seeing that the lake was thus occupied, the king's attendants turned back and went to where King Duryodhana was.
But when he heard their words, Duryodhana, eager for battle, sent his soldiers, saying, 'Drive them away!'
Hearing these words, the leader of the king’s army went to the Dvaivana lake and spoke this to the Gandharvas:
The king named Duryodhana, son of Dhritarashtra and mighty, is coming here to sport; therefore, make way for him.
Thus addressed, the Gandharvas laughed and replied to those men with these harsh words, O lord of the people:
Your king, the dull-minded Suyodhana, does not consider, who commands us as if we were his subjects, like the gods in heaven.
You too are certainly foolish and lacking sense, who, at his command, speak to us in this way.
All of you, go quickly to where that Kaurava king is; or else, go at once to the abode of Dharmaraja.
Thus addressed by the Gandharvas, the leaders of the king’s army fled to where the son of Dhritarashtra was.
Then all of them together approached Duryodhana and told the Kaurava what the Gandharvas had said.
When his army was stopped by the Gandharvas, the valiant son of Dhritarashtra, filled with anger, addressed his troops, O Bharata.
Punish these unrighteous ones who act against my will! If the lord of Shachi sports here with all the gods, we too shall play here freely as we please.
Hearing Duryodhana’s words, all the mighty sons of Dhritarashtra and thousands of warriors donned their armor.
Then, overpowering all those present, they forcefully entered that forest, filling the ten directions with a great lion’s roar.
Then the Kuru soldiers were restrained by other Gandharvas, who said only with conciliation, 'Do not act rashly, O lord.'
Though restrained by the Gandharvas with gentle words, O king, disregarding them, they entered that great forest.
When the sons of Dhritarashtra with their kings would not stop, all the sky-roaming Gandharvas reported this to Citraratha.
The king of the Gandharvas, Citraratha, spoke to all regarding the Kauravas: 'Punish these ignoble ones!'—thus Citraratha, greatly enraged.
