Arjuna, the ambidextrous wielder of the bow, holds the mighty Gandiva, swift as Bhima; those divine weapons are his. Who here could withstand the energy of these three?
Hearing those words of the king, Saubala approached Duryodhana in private and informed Karna of everything; but Karna, with a troubled mind, was not pleased.
Hearing those words of Dhritarashtra, Shakuni then spoke to Duryodhana at the right moment, together with Karna.
Having exiled the heroic Pandavas by your own strength, O Bharata, enjoy this earth alone, as the slayer of Shambara did in heaven.
Today, O king, the entire earth, girdled by the sea, with its mountains, forests, and all that moves and is still, is yours together with your brothers.
The kings dwelling in the east, south, west, and north have all been made tributaries to you, O lord of men.
That fortune which once, shining brightly, favored the Pandavas, O king, has now, together with your brothers, come to you.
When Yudhishthira was at Indraprastha, we saw that radiant prosperity for a long time, O king, though we were consumed by sorrow.
But now, through the strength of your intellect, O mighty-armed king, that same shining fortune, seized by you, is seen to be yours.
In the same way, O king of kings, all the other kings, destroyers of enemy heroes, are established under your command, saying, 'What shall we do?'
Thus, O king, we possess the entire earth, girdled by the sea, with its mountains, forests, towns, and villages, together with its armies.
Adorned with many fortresses, filled with various forests, and crowded with people of many lands, the earth is rich in great realms and abundant harvests.
Honored by the twice-born, O king, you shine like the lord of stars; by your valor among the gods, you blaze like the radiant sun.
Like Yama among the Rudras, like Indra among the Maruts, so among the Kurus, O king, surrounded by your kin, you shine like the lord of stars.
Those whose commands you once disregarded, who did not remain under your rule—behold them now, the Pandavas, deprived of prosperity and dwelling in the forest.
It is heard, O great king, that the Pandavas are living in the Dvaita forest together with Brahmanas and other forest-dwellers.
Go forth, O king, endowed with supreme splendor, and torment the sons of Pandu with your brilliance, as the sun scorches with its rays.
Established in sovereignty, unshaken from your kingdom and surrounded by prosperity, see, O king, the sons of Pandu bereft of fortune, you who are prosperous among the unprosperous.
Let the Pandavas, who are of noble lineage and once held great status, now look upon you, O blessed one, as the descendants of Nahusha once looked upon Yayati.
That prosperity, O lord of the people, which both friends and foes behold, shining through valor—indeed, it becomes truly effective.
He who, standing firm, looks upon his enemies in adversity—what greater happiness can there be than that, like one standing on a mountain peak surveying the world?
O tiger among kings, the joy a ruler gains from seeing his enemies in distress is not matched by the gain of sons, wealth, or even a kingdom.
What happiness would not come to one who, dwelling in an ashram, could see Dhananjaya, accomplished yet clad in bark and deerskin?
Let your wives, splendidly adorned, behold Krishna, sorrowful and wrapped in bark and deerskin, and let her become disheartened once more.
Let them revile themselves and their lives, now bereft of wealth, upon seeing the radiant prosperity of your wives, O lord of men.
Surely, in the midst of the assembly, her distress should not be as great as when she sees your wives, adorned with their ornaments.
Having spoken thus to the king, Karna, together with Shakuni, fell silent, O Janamejaya, at the end of his words.
Hearing Karna's words, King Duryodhana became delighted, but then again dejected, and spoke these words to Radheya.
All that you say, O Karna, is fixed in my mind; but I shall not obtain permission to go where the Pandavas are.
King Dhritarashtra laments those heroic men and even thinks the Pandavas have surpassed us through their ascetic discipline.
