O cruel one, because you have killed me, who had not fulfilled my purpose, with an arrow while I was observing the vow of a deer, a similar fate will soon befall you.
Thus cursed by the sage who lived as a deer, Pandu, distressed in appearance, refrained from approaching his wives, seeking to avoid the curse.
Once he said, 'Through my own recklessness I have come to this. I hear in the ancient stories that those without children have no worlds.'
Therefore, for my sake, beget sons,' he said to Kunti.
Then Kunti begot sons: from Dharma, Yudhishthira; from Vayu, Bhimasena; from Indra, Arjuna. Pleased, Pandu said, 'Here is your co-wife, Madri, who is childless and modest; let a son be begotten in her as well.'
Kunti agreed to this for Madri and instructed her in the vow; then, from the Ashvins, Nakula and Sahadeva were born to her.
But when Pāṇḍu saw Mādrī, adorned in all her ornaments, he became overwhelmed; and upon attaining her, he passed away.
Then Mādrī ascended the funeral pyre with him; she told Kuntī that she, as a noble woman, must remain vigilant for the sake of the sons of Yama.
After that, the ascetics led the five Pāṇḍavas, together with Kuntī, to Hastinapura.
There, the ascetics truthfully reported Pāṇḍu's ascent to heaven to Bhīṣma, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, and Vidura.
Then, the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra desired to burn the Pāṇḍavas, along with Kuntī, in the house of lac.
But Vidura rescued them; then Bhīma killed Hiḍimba and begot a son named Ghaṭotkaca on Hiḍimbā.
After that, they safely reached Ekacakrā; then, going to the land of the Pāñcālas, they won Draupadī at her svayaṃvara, obtained half the kingdom, and, residing at Indraprastha, begot sons on Draupadī.
