He is called Pratīpa. Pratīpa indeed married a lady of the Śaibya lineage, named Sunandī; in her, he begot three sons: Devāpi, Śantanu, and Bāhlīka.
Devāpi, while still a boy, entered the forest; but Śantanu became a king.
There is a verse on this: Whatever old thing he touches with his hands, he enjoys comfort, and he becomes young again; therefore, they know him as Shantanu.
This is the reason for his name Shantanu. Indeed, Shantanu married Ganga, the daughter of Bhagiratha, and from her was born Devavrata, who is called Bhishma.
Bhishma, out of desire to please his father, brought Satyavati, whom people call Kali, as his mother.
In her, before, from the sage Parashara, was born the son Dvaipayana; and in her, Shantanu had two sons, Chitrangada and Vichitravirya.
Chitrangada, having attained the kingdom, was slain by a Gandharva; then Vichitravirya became king.
Vichitravirya married the two daughters of the king of Kashi, Ambika and Ambalika; but Vichitravirya died childless.
Then Satyavati began to worry, thinking, 'How can there not be a break in Shantanu's lineage?'
So she thought of Dvaipayana; he stood before her, asking, 'What shall I do?' Satyavati said to him, 'Your brother has gone to heaven without children; for his sake, beget offspring.'
He agreed, saying, 'So be it,' and there he begot three sons: Dhritarashtra, Pandu, and Vidura.
From Dhritarashtra, by Gandhari and the boon of Dvaipayana, a hundred sons were born; among the sons of Dhritarashtra, four were foremost: Duryodhana, Dushasana, Vikarna, and Chitrasena.
To Pandu were born two excellent wives, Kunti and Madri. While hunting, he killed a sage engaged in union, who was moving in the form of a deer, with an arrow.
Pierced by the arrow, he spoke to Pandu. There is a verse on this.
