Become Indra, O mighty-armed one, bringing happiness to us all; be anointed today, for you are truly worthy, O best of beings.
Rule over the three worlds yourself, unwavering and intent on victory; I am your servant, O Shakra, for I do not desire the position of Indra.
Your strength is wondrous, O hero; you should defeat the enemies of the gods; the worlds, amazed by your power, would disregard me.
If a powerless, defeated one were to hold the station of Indra, O best of gods, the worlds would look down on me because of your brilliance.
If there were discord between us, the tireless ones would strive for division; and if you, O lord, were divided, the world would fall into duality.
When the worlds are split in two and our positions are thus determined, conflict would arise, O mighty one, from the divisions among beings.
Then, O dear one, you would defeat me in battle as you see fit; therefore, you alone should become Indra—do not hesitate.
You alone are king—may good be yours—of the three worlds and mine as well; tell me, O Shakra, what you wish me to do by your command.
I shall become Indra, O mighty one, according to your words, if this statement of yours is truly spoken with firm resolve.
Or if you wish, O Skanda, to carry out my command, listen: be anointed as the commander of the gods' army, O mighty one.
For the destruction of the Dānavas, for the accomplishment of the gods' aims, and for the welfare of cows and Brahmins, anoint me as commander of the army.
Thus anointed by Maghavat, together with all the hosts of gods, he shone greatly there, honored by the great sages.
There, the golden umbrella held above him gleamed, as did the radiant aura of blazing fire.
And a divine garland of gold, made by Viśvakarman, was fastened on him by the illustrious destroyer of Tripura himself.
Having arrived, O tiger among men, together with his queen, the blessed Lord, bearer of the bull-banner, joyfully offered worship.
The twice-born summoned Rudra and Agni; then the son of Rudra, renowned and possessing immense brilliance, is called Kumara, wondrous in appearance.
The seed released by Rudra became the white mountain; the dwelling of the fire-god on that white peak was made by the Krittikas.
Seeing Rudra being worshipped, all the dwellers of heaven addressed the son of Rudra as Guha, the foremost among the virtuous.
Entering the fire by Rudra, this child was born; there Skanda was born, thus becoming the son of Rudra.
From the energy of Rudra, Agni, Svaha, and the six women, Skanda was born, the best among the gods, thus becoming the son of Rudra.
Clad in spotless red garments, the son of fire shines with a radiant form, like the sun with rays colored by red clouds.
A rooster, given by Agni, serves as his emblem, adorned and placed upon his chariot; he shines, fierce as the black fire, with a red hue.
Whatever movement, radiance, power, and strength exist among all beings, that power stands foremost for him, increasing the gods’ victory.
His armor and innate body entered him; whenever the god fights, these always manifest.
Power, righteousness, strength, brilliance, beauty, truth, elevation, devotion to Brahman, clarity, and protection of devotees—
The destruction of enemies and the safeguarding of worlds—all these arose together with Skanda, O lord of men.
Thus, anointed and adorned by all the hosts of gods, he shone, confident and joyful, with the appearance of a full moon.
With desired recitations of sacred study, divine trumpets, songs of Gandharvas, and all the groups of Apsaras,
And with many others, pleased and adorned, surrounded by the hosts of Pisacas and gods, he played and shone, anointed by the gods, the son of fire.
The dwellers of heaven beheld Mahasena anointed, as the sun rises dispelling darkness.
