Seeing the army of the gods shattered by the Dānavas, the mighty one, relying on his own power, thought, 'Such a man should be known by me.'
He went to Mount Mānasā and, meditating intensely on this matter, then heard a terrible, distressed cry uttered by a woman.
"Let someone come to me, let a man save me! Let someone point out my husband, or let me have a husband myself!"
But Purandara said to her, "Do not fear, there is no danger for you." Having spoken thus, he then saw Keśin standing before him.
Seizing the maiden in his hand, the one crowned and bearing a mace, firm as a mountain of metal, Vasava then spoke to him:
You man of unrighteous deeds, why do you desire to seize this maiden? Know me as the wielder of the thunderbolt; cease harassing her.
Release her at once; she has been sought by me, O Shakra. It is fitting for you, blazing with energy, to return to your own city, O slayer of Vritra.
Having spoken thus, Kesi hurled his mace to slay Indra; but Vasava split it in mid-air with his thunderbolt as it came rushing down.
Then, enraged, Kesi cast a mountain peak, resembling a great cloud and filled with blazing fire.
Seeing that mountain summit hurtling toward him, O King, Shatakratu shattered it with his thunderbolt, and it fell to the earth.
Struck by that peak as it fell, Kesi was greatly afflicted; abandoning the illustrious maiden, he fled swiftly.
When the asura had departed, Vasava spoke to the maiden: Who are you? Whose daughter are you? And what are you doing here, O lovely-faced one?
I am known as Devsena, daughter of Prajapati; my sister is Daityasena, who was formerly abducted by Kesi.
Together as sisters, along with our companions, we came to this lake for pleasure, having sought permission from Prajapati.
Constantly, the great asura Kesi seeks to abduct us; Daityasena desires him, but I do not, O slayer of Vritra.
She was taken by him, O lord, but I was freed by your strength. O Indra, I desire as my husband one who is invincible, as you have declared.
You are my mother's sister's son; my mother is Daksha's daughter. I wish to declare my own strength to you myself.
I am weak, O mighty-armed one, but my husband will be powerful, destined by my father's boon, honored by gods and asuras alike.
What kind of strength, O goddess, will your husband possess? This I wish to hear from your own words, O blameless one.
He who will conquer the gods, danavas, yakshas, kinnaras, nagas, and rakshasas, who will defeat wicked daityas, mighty in valor and strength—
He who, together with you, will conquer all beings—he will be my husband, devoted to Brahman and increaser of fame.
Hearing her words, Indra was deeply troubled and thought: This goddess has no husband such as she describes.
Then he beheld at the sunrise the radiant Sun, and the illustrious Soma entering into the orb of the day.
As the new moon commenced, at a fierce moment, he saw the battle between gods and asuras on the mountain at dawn.
Indra saw the eastern twilight filled with red clouds, and the ocean with red waters, the abode of Varuna.
He saw the Bhṛgus and the Angiras offering oblations with various mantras, and Agni, having received the offering, entering into the Sun.
Then, on the twenty-fourth lunar day, the Sun appeared; thus, Agni entered the Sun, and Soma entered the Sun as well.
Seeing the union of the Moon and the Sun as one, and witnessing that fierce conjunction, Indra reflected.
A dreadful halo is seen around the Sun and Moon; at this very end of night, it foretells a great battle.
The river Sindhu flowed backward with force, and the jackal with a fiery mouth howled loudly facing the Sun.
