आहुतिष्वेव यस्याग्नेर्हविराज्यं विधीयते। सोग्निर्बृहस्पतेः पुत्र शंयुर्नाम महाप्रभः
In the offerings where Agni’s clarified butter is prescribed, that Agni is the son of Bṛhaspati, named Śaṃyu, of great brilliance.
चातुर्मास्येषु यस्येष्टमश्वमेधाग्रभागभूत्। दीप्तिज्वालैरनेकाग्रैरग्निष्टोमोऽथ वीर्यवान्
In the Cāturmāsya sacrifices, whose portion is the foremost in the Aśvamedha, Agniṣṭoma, possessed of many blazing flames, is the powerful one.
शंयोरप्रतिमा भार्या सत्या सत्याऽथ धर्मजा। अग्नितस्य सुतो दीप्तस्तिस्रः कन्याश्च सुव्रताः
Śaṃyu’s incomparable wife is Satyā, true and born of righteousness; from Agnitas, their son is Dīpta, and three daughters of virtuous vows.
प्रथमेनाज्यभागेन पूज्यते योऽग्निरध्वरे। अग्निस्तस्य भरद्वाजः प्रथमः पुत्र उच्यते
The fire who is worshipped first with the portion of clarified butter in the sacrifice, that Agni’s first son is said to be Bharadvāja.
पौर्णमासेषु सर्वेषु हविराज्यं ध्रुवोद्यतम्। भरतो नामतः सोग्निर्द्वितीयः शंयुतः सुतः
In all the full moon sacrifices, the clarified butter is always offered; Bharata by name is that Agni, the second son of Śaṃyu.
तिस्रः कन्या भवन्त्यन्या यासां स भरत पतिः। भारतस्तु सुतस्तस्य भारत्येका च पुत्रिका
There are three other daughters, whose husband is Bharata; Bhārata is his son, and Bhāratī is one daughter.
भारतो भरतस्याग्नेः पावकस्तु प्रजायते। महानत्यर्थमहितस्तथा भरतसत्तम
From Bhārata, the Agni, is born Pāvaka, great and exceedingly glorious, O best of the Bharatas.
भरद्वाजस्य भार्या तु वीरा वीरश्च पिण्डदः। प्राहुराज्येन तस्येज्यां सोमस्येव द्विजाः शनैः
The wife of Bharadvāja is Vīrā, and Vīra is Piṇḍada; the twice-born say his sacrifice is with clarified butter, like Soma’s, gradually.
हविषा यो द्वितीयेन सोमेन सह युज्यते। रथप्रभू रथध्वानः कुम्भरेताः स उच्यते
He who is joined with the second oblation of clarified butter together with Soma is called Rathaprabhū, Rathadhvāna, and Kumbharetas.
सरय्वां जनयत्सिद्धिं भानुं भाभिः समावृणोत्। आग्नेयमनयन्मिथ्यं मिथ्यो नामैव कथ्यते
He generated Siddhi in Sarayū, and covered Bhānu with rays; the Agni born from illusion is called Mithya by name.
यस्तु न च्यवते नित्यं शयसा वर्चसा श्रिया। अग्निर्निश्च्यवनो नाम पृथिवीं स्तौति केवलम्
He who never falls, ever steadfast in rest, brilliance, and splendor, is Agni named Niścyavana, who praises only the earth.
विपाप्मा कलुषैर्मुक्तो विशुद्धश्चार्चिषा ज्वलन्। विपापोऽग्निः सुतस्तस्य योज्यः समयकर्मसु
Freed from impurities and cleansed of faults, blazing with pure flames, Vipāpa is the Agni, his son, fit for proper rites.
अक्रोशतां हि भूतानां यः करोति हि निष्कृतिम्। अग्निः स निष्कृतिर्नाम शोभयत्यभिसेवितः
He who makes restitution for the cries of beings—fire is called that restitution, and when honored, it shines brilliantly.
अनुकूजन्ति येनेह वेदनार्ताः स्वयं जनाः। तस्य पुत्रः स्वनो नाम पावकः सरुजस्करः
By whom people afflicted with pain here groan aloud—his son is named Svana, the sound, who brings all suffering.
यस्तु विश्वस् जगतो बुद्धिमाक्रम्य तिष्ठति। तं प्राहुरध्यात्मविदो विश्वजिन्नाम पावकम्
He who, having seized the intellect of the universe, stands firm—they call him, the knowers of the self, the fire named Vishvajit, the conqueror of all.
अन्तराग्निः स्मृतो यस्तु भुक्तं पचति देहिनाम्। स यज्ञे विश्वभुङ्वाम सर्वलोकेषु भारत
The inner fire, it is said, is that which digests what is eaten in embodied beings; in sacrifice, he is called Vishvabhuk, the enjoyer of all, in all worlds, O Bharata.
ब्रह्मचारी यतात्मा च सततं विपुलप्रभः। ब्राह्मणाः पूजयन्त्येनं पाकयज्ञेषु पावकम्
The one who is ever self-controlled, a student of sacred knowledge, of vast brilliance—the Brahmins worship this fire in the sacrificial rites of cooking.
प्रथितो गोपतिर्नाम नदी यस्याभवत्प्रिया। तस्मिन्कर्माणि सर्वाणि क्रियन्ते धर्मकर्तृभिः
Renowned as Gopatir by name, whose beloved was the river—in him, all acts are performed by those who uphold righteousness.
बडबाग्निः पिबत्यम्भो योसौ परमदारुणः। ऊर्द्वभागूर्ध्वभाङ्नाम कविः प्राणाश्रितस्तु यः
The submarine fire, terrible, drinks up the water; the sage who abides in the breath is called Urdhvabhanu, the upward-rising one.
उदग्द्वारं हविर्यस्य गृहे नित्यं प्रदीयते। ततस्तुष्टो भवेद्ब्रह्मा स्विष्टकृत्परमः स्मृतः
He whose oblation is always offered in the house facing north—by him, when pleased, Brahma is called Svishtakrit, the supreme accomplisher.
यः प्रशान्तेषु भूतेषु आविर्भवति पावकः। क्रुद्धस्य तु रसो जज्ञे मन्युतीव्रा च पुत्रिका
The fire that appears among peaceful beings—its essence was born of anger, and its fierce daughter is called Manyutivra.
स्वाहेति दारुणा क्रूरा सर्वभूतेषु तिष्ठति। त्रिदिवे यस्य सदृशो नास्ति रूपेण कश्चन। अतुलत्वात्कृतो देवैर्नाम्ना कामस्तु पावकः
She, harsh and cruel, is called Svaha, abiding among all beings; in heaven, none is her equal in form; because of her incomparability, the gods named her Kama, the fire of desire.
संहर्षाद्धारयन्क्रोधं धन्वी स्रग्वी रथे स्थितः। समरे नाशयेच्छत्रूनमोघो नाम पावकः
Bearing joy, restraining anger, armed with a bow, adorned with a garland, standing on a chariot—in battle, he destroys enemies, and is called Amogha, the unfailing fire.
उक्थ्यो नाम महाभाग त्रिभिरुक्थैरभिष्टुतः। महावर्षं त्वजनयत्सकामाश्वं हि यं विदुः
He who is called Ukthya, greatly blessed, praised with three hymns—he produced great rain, and those who know say he had a horse of desire.
काश्यपो ह्यथ वासिष्ठः प्राणश्च प्राणपुत्रकः। अग्निराङ्गिरसश्चैव च्यवनस्तीव्रवर्चकः
Kashyapa, or Vasistha, and Prana, the son of Prana; also Angirasa's fire, and Cyavana, of intense brilliance—
अचरत्स तपस्तीव्रं पुत्रार्थे बहुवार्षिकम्। पुत्रं लभेयं धर्मिष्ठं यशसा ब्रह्मणा समम्
Practiced severe austerity for many years, desiring a son: 'May I obtain a righteous son, equal in fame to Brahma.'
महाव्याहृतिभिर्ध्यातः पञ्चभिस्तैस्तदा त्वथ। जज्ञे तेजोमयार्चिष्मान्पञ्चवर्णः प्राकरः
Then, meditated upon by those five with the great utterances, there was born a blazing, radiant one, with five colors, like a rampart.
समिद्धोऽग्निः शिरस्तस्य बाहू सूर्यनिभौ तथा। त्वङ्नेत्रे च सुवर्णाभे कृष्णे जङ्घे च भारत
His head was fire kindled, his arms like the sun; his skin and eyes shone like gold, and his thighs were dark, O Bharata.
पञ्चवर्षः स तपसा कृतस्तैः पञ्चभिर्जनैः। पाञ्चजन्यः श्रुतो देवः पञ्चवंशकरस्तु सः
He was made five years old by the austerity of those five men; that god became known as Panchajanya, the progenitor of five lineages.
दशवर्षसहस्राणि तपस्तप्त्वा महातपाः। जनयत्पावकं घोरं पितॄणां स प्रजाः सृजन्
Having performed austerity for ten thousand years, the great ascetic generated the terrible fire, producing the progeny of the ancestors.
