अल्पायुषो दरिद्राश्च धर्मिष्ठा मानवास्तथा। दीर्घायुषः समृद्धाश्च विधर्माणो युगक्षये
The righteous among men become short-lived and poor, while the unrighteous, at the end of the age, are long-lived and prosperous.
नगराणआं विहारेषु विधर्माणो युगक्षये। अधर्मिष्ठैरुपायैश् प्रजा व्यवहरन्त्युत
In the public places of cities, at the end of the age, the unrighteous prevail; people conduct their affairs by unrighteous means.
संचयेन तथाऽल्पेन भवन्त्याढ्यमदान्विताः। धनं विश्वासतो न्यस्तं मिथो भूयिष्ठशो नराः
With little accumulation, people become wealthy and arrogant; trusting one another, they deposit wealth, but most are intent on taking it away.
हर्तुं व्यवसिता राजन्पापाचारसमनविताः। नैतदस्तीति मनुजा वर्तन्ते निरपत्रपाः
Intent on stealing, O king, and engaged in wicked conduct, people shamelessly say, 'This does not exist,' and behave accordingly.
पुरुषादानि सत्वानि पक्षिणोऽथ मृगास्तथा। नगराणां विहारेषु चैत्येष्वपि च शेरते
Man-eating beings, birds, and also beasts, dwell in the public places of cities and even in shrines.
सप्तवर्षाष्टवर्षाश्च स्त्रियो गर्भधरा नृप। दशद्वादशवर्षाणां पुंसां पुत्रः प्रजायते
O king, girls of seven or eight years become pregnant, and sons are born to boys of ten or twelve years.
भवन्ति षोडशे वर्षे नराः पलितिनस्तथा। आयुःक्षयो मनुष्याणां क्षिप्रमेव प्रपद्यते
At sixteen years, men become gray-haired; the span of human life quickly diminishes.
क्षीणायुषो महाराज तरुणा वृद्धशीलिनः। तरुणानां च यच्छीलं तद्वृद्धेषु प्रजायते
O great king, those with short lives are youthful in age but possess the habits of the old, and the habits of the young appear among the old.
विपरीतास्तदा नार्यो वञ्चयित्वाऽर्हतः पतीन्। व्युच्चरन्त्यपि दुःशीला दासैः पशुभिरेव च
At that time, women act contrary to custom, deceiving even worthy husbands; even those of bad conduct consort with servants and animals.
वीरपत्न्यस्तथा नार्यः संश्रयन्ति नरान्नृप। भर्तारमपि जीवन्तमन्यान्व्यभिचरन्त्युत
Similarly, O king, wives of heroes seek out other men, and even while their husbands live, they commit adultery with others.
तस्मिन्युगसहस्रान्ते संप्राप्ते चायुषः क्षये। अनावृष्टिर्महाराज जायते बहुवार्षिकी
At the end of a thousand ages, when the span of life is exhausted, O great king, a long drought arises.
ततस्तान्यल्पसाराणि सत्वानि क्षुधितानि वै। प्रलयं यान्ति भूयिष्ठं पृथिव्यां पृथिवीपते
Then, those creatures with little strength, afflicted by hunger, mostly perish upon the earth, O lord of the earth.
ततो दिनकरैर्दीप्तैः सप्तभिर्मनुजाधिप। पीयते सलिलं सर्वं समुद्रेषु सरित्सु च
Afterwards, O ruler of men, the seven blazing suns drink up all the water from the oceans and rivers.
यच्च रकाष्ठं तृणं चापि शुष्कं चार्द्रं च भारत। सर्वं तद्भस्मसाद्भूतं दृश्यते भरतर्षभ
Whatever is wood, grass, dry or moist, O descendant of Bharata, all is seen to become ashes.
ततः संवर्तको वह्निर्वायुना सह भारत। लोकमाविशते पूर्वमादित्यैरुपशोषितम्
Then, O Bharata, the fire of destruction, together with the wind, enters the world, which has already been dried up by the suns.
ततः स पृथिवीं भित्त्वा प्रविश्य च रसातलम्। रदेवदानवयक्षाणां भयं जनयते महत्
That fire, breaking through the earth and entering the underworld, causes great fear among the gods, demons, and yakshas.
निरदहन्नागलोकं च यच्च किंचित्क्षिताविह। अधस्तात्पृथिवीपाल सर्वं नाशयते क्षणात्
Burning the realm of nagas and whatever else exists below the earth, O protector of the earth, it destroys everything in an instant.
ततो योजनविंशानां सहस्राणि शतानि च। निर्दहत्यशिवो वायुः स च संवर्तकोऽनलः
Then, the wind and the destructive fire burn hundreds of thousands of yojanas.
सदेवासुरगन्धर्वं सयक्षोरगराक्षसम्। ततो दहति दीप्तः स सर्वमेव जगद्विभुः
That blazing lord burns all the worlds, including gods, demons, gandharvas, yakshas, nagas, and rakshasas.
ततो गजकुलप्रख्यास्तजिन्मालाविभूषिताः। उत्तिष्ठन्ति महामेघा नभस्यद्भुतदर्शनाः
Then, great clouds, adorned with rows of elephant-like forms and skins, rise up in the sky, wondrous to behold.
केचिन्नीलोत्पलश्यामाः केचित्कुमुदसन्निभाः। केचित्किञ्जल्कसंकाशाः केचित्पीताः पयोधराः
Some are dark like blue lotuses, some resemble white water lilies, some are like pollen, and some are yellow like rain-bearing clouds.
केचिद्धारिद्रसंकाशाः कारण्डवनिभास्तथा। केचित्कमलपत्राभाः केचिद्धिङ्गुलसप्रभाः
Some are like turmeric, some resemble ducks, some have the hue of lotus petals, and some shine like red arsenic.
केचित्पुरवराकाराः केचिद्गजकुलोपमाः। केचिदञ्जनसंकाशाः केचिन्मकरसन्निभाः
Some are shaped like city fortresses, some resemble herds of elephants, some are dark like collyrium, and some are like crocodiles.
विद्युन्मालापिनद्धाङ्गाः समुत्तिष्ठन्ति वै घनाः। घोररूपा महाराज घोरस्वननिनादिताः
Clouds, their bodies bound with garlands of lightning, rise up, O king, terrifying in form and resounding with dreadful noise.
ततो जलघराः सर्वं व्याप्नुवनति नभस्तलम्। `गर्जन्तः पृथिवीपाल पृथिवीधरसन्निभाः
Then, the rain clouds, covering the entire sky, roar, O protector of the earth, resembling the mountains of the earth.
तैरियं पृथिवी सर्वा सपर्वतवनाकरा। आपूर्यते महाराज सलिलौघपरिप्लुता
By them, O great king, the whole earth, with its mountains, forests, and lakes, is filled and flooded by torrents of water.
ततस्ते जलदा घोरा राविणः पुरुषर्षभ। पर्वतान्प्लावयन्त्याशु चोदिताः परमेष्ठिना
Then those fierce, thunderous clouds, O best of men, urged by the supreme lord, quickly inundate the mountains.
वर्षमाणा महत्तोयं पूरयन्तो वसुंधराम्। सुघोरमशिवं रौद्रं नाशयनति च पावकम्
Pouring forth great waters and flooding the earth, they destroy the fire, terrifying, inauspicious, and fierce.
ततो द्वादशवर्षाणि पयोदास्त उपप्लवे। धाराभिः पूरयन्तो वै चोद्यमाना महात्मना
Then, for twelve years, the clouds poured down torrents of rain, driven on by the great soul.
ततः समुद्रः स्वां वेलामतिक्रामति भारत। पर्वताश्च विदीर्यन्ते मही चापि विदीर्यते
After that, O Bharata, the ocean overflows its shores, mountains are rent asunder, and the earth itself is split.
