यदा द्रोणो विविधानस्त्रमार्गा- न्निदर्शयन्समरे चित्रयोधी। न पाण्डवाञ्श्रेष्ठतरान्निहन्ति तदा नाशंसे विजयायं संजय
When Drona, displaying various weapons and skills in battle, did not slay the foremost Pandavas, then, O Sanjaya, I did not expect victory.
यदाऽश्रौषं चास्मदीयान्महारथा- न्व्यवस्थितानर्जुनस्यान्तकाय। संशप्तकान्निहतानर्जुनेन तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When I heard that our great warriors, positioned to destroy Arjuna, the Saṃśaptakas, were slain by him, then, O Sanjaya, I did not expect victory.
यदाऽश्रौषं व्यूहमभेद्यमन्यै- र्भारद्वाजेनात्तशस्त्रेण गुप्तम्। भित्त्वा सौभद्रं वीरमेकं प्रविष्टं तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When I heard that the impenetrable formation, guarded by Bharadvaja with drawn weapons, was breached by the lone hero, Subhadra's son, then, O Sanjaya, I did not expect victory.
यदाऽभिमन्युं परिवार्य बालं सर्वे हत्त्वा हृष्टरूपा बभूवुः। महारथाः पार्थमशक्नुवन्त- स्तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When I heard that, surrounding the young Abhimanyu, all the great warriors killed him and rejoiced, yet could not overcome Partha, then, O Sanjaya, I did not expect victory.
यदाऽश्रौषमभिमन्युं निहत्य हर्षान्मूढान्क्रोशतो धार्तराष्ट्रान्। क्रोधादुक्तं सैन्धवे चार्जुनेन तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When I heard that, after slaying Abhimanyu, the deluded sons of Dhritarashtra cried out in joy, and Arjuna spoke angrily to the Sindhu king, then, O Sanjaya, I did not expect victory.
यदाऽश्रौषं सैन्धवार्थे प्रतिज्ञां प्रतिज्ञातां तद्वधायार्जुनेन। सत्यां तीर्णां शत्रुमध्ये च तेन तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When I heard that Arjuna vowed to slay the Sindhu king, fulfilled that vow in the midst of the enemy, then, O Sanjaya, I did not expect victory.
यदाऽश्रौषं श्रान्तहये धनंजये मुक्त्वा हयान्पाययित्वोपवृत्तान्। पुनर्युक्त्वा वासुदेवं प्रयातं तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When I heard that Dhananjaya, his horses exhausted, unyoked them, gave them water, let them rest, then yoked them again and set out with Vasudeva—at that time, Sanjaya, I did not hope for victory.
यदाऽश्रौषं वाहनेष्वक्षमेषु रथोपस्थे तिष्ठता पाण्डवेन। सर्वान्योधान्वारितानर्जुनेन तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When I heard that the Pandava stood on his chariot, his steeds and axles battered, holding back all the warriors by himself—at that time, Sanjaya, I did not hope for victory.
यदाऽश्रौषं नागबलैः सुदुःसहं द्रोणानीकं युयुधानं प्रमथ्य। यातं वार्ष्णेयं यत्र तौ कृष्णपार्थौ तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय

यदा द्रोणः कृतवर्मा कृपश्च कर्णो द्रौणिर्मद्रराजश्च शूरः। अमर्षयन्सैन्धवं वध्यमानं तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When Drona, Kritavarma, Kripa, Karna, Drona's son, and the valiant king of Madra could not endure the slaughter of the Sindhu king—at that time, Sanjaya, I did not hope for victory.
यदाऽश्रौषं देवराजेन दत्तां दिव्यां शक्तिं व्यंसितां माधवेन। घटोत्कचे राक्षसे घोररूपे तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When I heard that the divine spear given by the king of the gods was wasted by Madhava on Ghatotkacha, the fierce rakshasa—at that time, Sanjaya, I did not hope for victory.
यदाऽश्रौषं कर्णघटोत्कचाभ्यां युद्धे मुक्तां सूतपुत्रेण शक्तिम्। यया वध्यः समरे सव्यसाची तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When I heard that in battle between Karna and Ghatotkacha, the son of the suta released the spear by which Savyasachi could have been slain—at that time, Sanjaya, I did not hope for victory.
यदाऽश्रौषं द्रोणमाचार्यमेकं धृष्टद्युम्नेनाभ्यतिक्रम्य धर्मम्। रथोपस्थे प्रायगतं विशस्तं तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When I heard that Drona, the teacher, was alone, his dharma transgressed by Dhrishtadyumna, lying on his chariot, slain—at that time, Sanjaya, I did not hope for victory.
यदाऽश्रौषं द्रौणिना द्वैरथस्थं माद्रीसुतं नकुलं लोकमध्ये। समं युद्धे मण्डलेभ्यश्चरन्तं तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When I heard that Drona's son engaged Nakula, son of Madri, in single chariot combat, both moving skillfully among the formations—at that time, Sanjaya, I did not hope for victory.
यदा द्रोणे निहते द्रोणपुत्रो नारायणं दिव्यमस्त्रं विकुर्वन्। नैषामन्तं गतवान्पाण्डवानां तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय

यदाऽश्रौषं भीमसेनेन पीतं रक्तं भ्रातुर्युधि दुःशासनस्य। निवारितं नान्यतमेन भीमं तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय

यदाऽश्रौषं कर्णमत्यन्तशूरं हतं पार्थेनाहवेष्वप्रधृष्यम्। तस्मिन्भ्रातृणां विग्रहे देवगुह्ये तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When I heard that Karna, supremely valiant and unconquerable in battle, was slain by Partha in that secret struggle among brothers—at that time, Sanjaya, I did not hope for victory.
यदाऽश्रौषं द्रोणपुत्रं च शूरं दुःशासनं कृतवर्माणमुग्रम्। युधिष्टिरं धर्मराजं जयन्तं तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When I heard that Drona's son, the valiant Duhshasana, and the fierce Kritavarma were all defeated by Yudhishthira, king of dharma—at that time, Sanjaya, I did not hope for victory.

यदाऽश्रौषं कलहद्यूतमूलं मायाबलं सौबलं पाण्डवेन। हतं सङ्ग्रामे सहदेवेन पापं तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When I heard that Shakuni, master of deceit and root of the quarrel, was slain in battle by Sahadeva—at that time, Sanjaya, I did not hope for victory.
यदाऽश्रौषं श्रान्तमेकं शयानं ह्रदं गत्वा स्तम्भयित्वा तदम्भः। दुर्योधनं विरथं भग्नशक्तिं तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When I heard that Duryodhana, exhausted and alone, entered the lake, immobilized its waters, and was left without chariot or weapon—at that time, Sanjaya, I did not hope for victory.
यदाऽश्रौषं पाण्डवांस्तिष्ठमानान् गत्वा ह्रदे वासुदेवेन सार्धम्। अमर्षणं धर्षयतः सुतं मे तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When I heard that my son, unable to endure, attacked the Pandavas as they stood with Vasudeva by the lake—at that time, Sanjaya, I did not hope for victory.
यदाऽश्रौषं विविधांश्चित्रमार्गान् गदायुद्धे मण्डलशश्चरन्तम्। मिथ्या हतं वासुदेवस्य बुद्ध्या तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When I heard that in the mace duel, as he moved in many wondrous circles, my son was slain by Krishna's stratagem, though it was a false blow—at that time, Sanjaya, I did not hope for victory.
यदाऽश्रौषं द्रोणपुत्रादिभिस्तै- र्हतान्पञ्चालान्द्रौपदेयांश्च सुप्तान्। कृतं बीभत्समयशस्यं च कर्म तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When I heard that the Panchalas and the sons of Draupadi were slain in their sleep by the son of Drona and others, and that Bhimasena performed a terrible and glorious deed, then, Sanjaya, I no longer hoped for victory.
यदाऽश्रौषं भीमसेनानुयाते- नाश्वत्थाम्ना परमास्त्रं प्रयुक्तम्। क्रुद्धेनैषीकमवधीद्येन गर्भं तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When I heard that Ashvatthama, pursued by Bhimasena, unleashed the supreme weapon in anger and destroyed the unborn child, then, Sanjaya, I no longer hoped for victory.
यदाऽश्रौषं ब्रह्मशिरोऽर्जुनेन स्वस्तीत्युक्त्वाऽस्त्रमस्त्रेण शान्तम्। अश्वत्थाम्ना मणिरत्नं च दत्तं तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When I heard that Arjuna, uttering words of peace, neutralized the Brahmashira weapon with another weapon, and that Ashvatthama gave up his precious jewel, then, Sanjaya, I no longer hoped for victory.
यदाऽश्रौषं द्रोणपुत्रेण गर्भे वैराट्या वै पात्यमाने महास्त्रैः। संजीवयामीति हरेः प्रतिज्ञां तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय
When I heard that the son of Drona, with mighty weapons, sought to destroy the unborn child of Uttara, and that Hari (Krishna) vowed to restore life, then, Sanjaya, I no longer hoped for victory.
द्वैपायनः केशवो द्रोणपुत्रं परस्पेरणाभिशापैः शशाप। बुद्ध्वा चाहं बुद्धिहीनोऽद्य सूत संतप्ये वै पुत्रपौत्रैश्च हीनः
Vyasa and Krishna cursed the son of Drona with mutual imprecations; and now, Suta, knowing this, I, devoid of wisdom, grieve, bereft of sons and grandsons.
शोच्या गान्धारी पुत्रपौत्रैर्विहीना तथा वध्वा पितृभिर्भ्रातृभिश्च। कृतं कार्यं दुष्करं पाण्डवेयैः प्राप्तं राज्यमसपत्नं पुनस्तैः
Gandhari is to be pitied, deprived of sons and grandsons, as are the daughters-in-law, bereft of fathers and brothers; the Pandavas have accomplished a most difficult task and regained the kingdom without rivals.
