Thus, as those two argued, standing before the assembly of sages, those who had gathered at his sacrifice asked, 'Who are these two?'
'By whose permission have these two entered Vainya's assembly? For what purpose do they speak out loudly and persistently?'
Then the supremely righteous Kāśyapa, knower of all dharma, informed them about the arrival of those two disputants.
Then Gautama, best of sages, spoke to the assembly: 'Hear the question spoken between us, O best of twice-born! Atri says Vainya is the Creator; here lies our great doubt.'
Then, when Gautama spoke these words in Vainya's assembly, the great sages, having heard, rushed toward the messenger.
All, bowing down, questioned Sanatkumāra, knower of dharma, to resolve the doubt, as the Soma-drinkers would question Brahmā.
And he, the great ascetic, having heard their words, replied to them as follows, with speech joined to righteousness and purpose.
Brahman joined with kṣatra, and kṣatra joined with brahman—together they burn up their enemies, like fire and wind in the forest.
The king is indeed proclaimed as righteousness, and is truly the lord of the people; he is Indra, Shukra, Dhata, and Brihaspati.
He is Prajapati, the universal sovereign, the emperor, the Kshatriya, the lord of the earth, the ruler; who, being praised by these names, would not be worthy of worship?
He is called the ancient origin, the victorious in battle, the fulfiller of desires, the one who is honored, the golden leader, the born-with-power, the tawny one; the king is so named. He is of true origin, ancient, and the promoter of true righteousness.
Fearing unrighteousness, the seers established strength in the Kshatriya; therefore, Brahman is dependent on Kshatra, and Kshatra on the imperishable Brahman.
Just as the sun among the gods in heaven dispels darkness with its brilliance, so too does the king on earth vigorously drive away unrighteousness.
Therefore, the preeminence of the king is established by the authority of scripture; the superior side is proven by that which declares 'the king.'
Then that king, delighted and of great mind, with his side victorious, joyfully spoke to Atri, who had previously praised him.
Because you, among men, have earlier declared me the greatest, and because all the gods and you, O sage among Brahmins, have agreed that I am the best,
Therefore, I shall give you much and various wealth: a thousand dark-complexioned maidservants, well-adorned and well-clad.
Ten crores of gold, and ten loads of gold coins as well—this I give to you, O sage among Brahmins, for I consider you all-knowing.
Then Atri, having received all this justly and with honor, that radiant and great ascetic returned to his own house.
Having joyfully given the wealth to his sons, with his mind made pure, he then set his intention and went to the forest.
Here, too, O conqueror of enemy cities, is a song of Sarasvati, spoken when questioned by the wise Garuda; listen to it.
What is truly best for a person here, O blessed one? How should one act so as not to fall from one's own duty? Tell me everything, O beautiful-limbed one, so that, instructed by you, I may not stray from my own duty.
How should I offer oblations to fire, or worship, and at what time, by what means does righteousness not perish? O fortunate one, tell me all this, so that I may move among the worlds free from stain.
Thus questioned by him, who was full of affection and eager to listen, endowed with the highest wisdom, Sarasvati spoke these words to the wise and righteous Garuda.
He who knows Brahman as instructed, who is always devoted to study, pure, and vigilant—he will go before to the world of the gods, and attain union with joy among the immortals.
There, indeed, are delightful, vast, sorrowless, and well-flowered lakes, most holy, free from mud, full of fish, with excellent fords, and adorned with golden lotuses.
On the banks of those rivers dwell the virtuous, honored separately by the Apsarases, adorned with most fragrant garlands, golden in hue, exceedingly joyful.
By giving a cow, one attains the highest world; by giving a bull, one goes to the world of the sun; by giving clothing, one reaches the lunar world; by giving gold, one attains immortality.
He who gives a cow that is excellent, yields good milk, has a fine calf, and does not stray, dwells in the world of the gods for as many years as there are hairs on that cow.
Whoever gives a bull, well-disciplined, a bearer of the plough, of endless strength, a yoke-bearer, powerful, and young, attains worlds equal to those gained by giving ten cows.
