क्षुब्धतोया महावेगाः श्वसमाना इवाशुगाः। सिन्धवः शोभयांचक्रुः काननानि तपात्यये
The rivers, their waters agitated and swift as if breathing, adorned the forests at the end of the rainy season.
नदतां काननान्तेषु श्रूयन्ते विविधाः स्वनाः। वृष्टिभिस्ताड्यमानानां वराहमृगपक्षिणाम्
At the edges of the forests, various sounds were heard—the cries of boars, deer, and birds struck by the rain.
स्तोककाः शिखिनश्चैव पुंस्कोकिलगणैः सह। मत्ताः परिपतन्ति स्म दर्दुरश्चैव दर्पिताः
Peacocks in small groups, together with flocks of male cuckoos, intoxicated, began to fly about, and the frogs, too, croaked proudly.
तदा बहुविधाकारा प्रावृण्मेघानुनादिता। अभ्यतीता शिवा तेषां चरतां मरुधन्वसु
Then, as the rainy season echoed with the sounds of many forms of clouds, that auspicious time passed for those wandering the wilderness.
क्रौञ्चहंससमाकीर्णा शरत्प्रमुदीताऽभवत्। रूढकक्षवनप्रस्था प्रसन्नजलनिम्नगा
With cranes and swans filling the lakes and rivers, autumn arrived, delightful, with overgrown banks and clear-flowing streams.
विमलाकाशनक्षत्रा शरत्तेषां शिवाऽभषत्। मृगद्विजसमाकीर्णा पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम्
Autumn, auspicious and clear, shone for them, its sky pure and full of stars, teeming with animals and birds, for the great-souled sons of Pandu.
दृश्यन्ते शान्तरजसः क्षपाजलदशीतलाः। ग्रहनक्षत्रसङ्घैश्च सोमेन च विराजिताः
Nights, their dust settled, became cool with autumn clouds, adorned by groups of planets and stars and by the moon.
कुमुदैः पुण्डरीकैश्च शीतवारिधराः शिवाः। नदीः पुष्करिणीश्चैव ददृशुः समलंकृताः
They saw the rivers and lotus ponds, beautiful and adorned, filled with kumuda and lotus flowers and cool, clear water.
ते वै मुमुदिरे वीराः प्रसन्नसलिलां शिवाम्। पश्यन्तो दृढधन्वानः परिपूर्णां सरस्वतीम्
Those heroes rejoiced, seeing the auspicious Sarasvati, full and with clear waters, as they beheld her with their strong bows.
तेषां पुण्यतमा रात्रिः पर्वसन्धौ स्म शारदी। तत्रैव वसतामासीत्कार्तिकी जनमेजय
For them, dwelling there, the most sacred night of the autumnal full moon occurred at the junction of the lunar fortnight, O Janamejaya.
पुण्यकृद्भिर्महासत्वैस्तापसैः सह पाण्डवाः। तत्सर्वं भरतश्रेष्ठ समूहुर्योगमुत्तमम्
Together with the great ascetics and righteous sages, the Pandavas, best of the Bharatas, all practiced the highest yoga.
तमिस्राभ्युदये तस्मिन्धौम्येन सह पाण्डवाः। सूतैः पौरोगवैः साकं काम्यकं प्रययुर्वनम्
At the rise of darkness, the Pandavas, together with Dhaumya, their charioteers, and priests, set out for the Kamyaka forest.
काम्यकं प्राप्य कौरव्य युधिष्ठिरपुरोगमाः। कृतातिथ्या मुनिगणैर्निषेदुः सह कृष्णया
Reaching Kamyaka, O descendant of Kuru, Yudhishthira at their head, they were welcomed by groups of sages and sat down with Krishna.
ततस्तान्परिविश्वस्तान्वसतः पाण्डुनन्दनान्। ब्राह्मणा बहवस्तत्र समन्तात्पर्यवारयन्
Then, as the sons of Pandu dwelt there at ease, many Brahmanas gathered around them from all sides.
अथाब्रवीद्द्विजः कश्चिदर्जुनस्य प्रियः सखा। स एष्यति महाबाहुर्वशी शौरिरुदारधीः
Then a certain Brahmin, a dear friend of Arjuna, spoke: 'That mighty-armed, virtuous, and noble-minded Vasudeva will soon arrive.'
विदिता हि हरेर्यूयमिहायाताः कुरूद्वहाः। सदा हि दर्शनाकाङ्क्षी श्रेयोन्वेषी च वो हरिः
For you are known to Hari, O best of the Kurus, and have come here; for Hari always desires to see you and seeks your welfare.
बहुवत्सरजीवी च मार्कण्डेयो महातपाः। स्वाध्यायतपसा युक्तः क्षिप्रं युष्मान्समेष्यति
The great ascetic Markandeya, who has lived for many ages, devoted to study and austerity, will soon come to you.
तथैव ब्रुवतस्तस्य प्रत्यदृश्यत केशवः। शैब्यसुग्रीवयुक्तेन रथेन रथिनारः
Even as he was speaking thus, Keshava appeared, the wielder of the chariot, together with Shaibya and Sugriva, riding in his chariot.
मघवानिव पौलोम्या सहितः सत्यभामया। उपायाद्देवकीपुत्रो दिदृक्षुः कुरुसत्तमान्
Just as Indra arrives with Paulomi, so did Devaki's son approach, accompanied by Satyabhama, eager to see the best of the Kurus.
अवतीर्य रथात्कृष्णो धर्मराजं यथाविधि। ववन्दे मुदितो धीमान्भीमं च बलिनां वरम्
Dismounting from his chariot, Krishna, full of joy and wisdom, properly greeted King Yudhishthira and Bhima, foremost among the strong.
पूजयामास धौम्यं च यमाभ्यामभिवादितः। परिष्वज्यमहाभागां द्रौपदीं पर्यसान्त्वयत्
He honored Dhaumya, having been saluted by the twins, and embraced the illustrious Draupadi, consoling her.
स दृष्ट्वा फल्गुनं वीरं चिरस्य प्रियमागतम्। पर्यष्वजत दाशार्हः पुनः पुनररिंदमः
Seeing the heroic Phalguna, his dear friend returned after a long time, Dasharha embraced him again and again, subduer of foes.
तथैव सत्यभामाऽपि द्रौपदीं परिषस्वजे। पाण्डवानां प्रियं भार्यां कृष्णस्य महिषी प्रिया
Likewise, Satyabhama embraced Draupadi, the beloved wife of the Pandavas, she herself being Krishna's cherished queen.
ततस्ते पाण्डवाः सर्वेसभार्याः सपुरोहिताः। आनर्चुः पुण्डरीकाक्षं परिवव्रुश्च सर्वशः
Then all the Pandavas, with their wives and priests, worshipped the lotus-eyed one and surrounded him on all sides.
कृष्णस्तु पार्थेन समेत्य विद्वान् धनंजयेनासुरमर्दनेन। बभौ यथा भूतपतिर्महात्मा समेत्य साक्षाद्भगवान्गुहेन
Krishna, meeting with Partha, the learned and foe-subduing Dhananjaya, shone like the great lord of beings meeting with Guha himself.
ततः समस्तानि किरीटमाली वनेषु वृत्तानि गदाग्रजाय। उक्त्वा यथावत्पुनरन्वपृच्छ- त्तस्मिन्सुभद्रां च तथाऽभिमन्युम्
Then the diademed one, after recounting to Bhima all that had happened in the forest, inquired again about Subhadra and Abhimanyu.
धौम्यं च कृष्णां च युधिष्ठिरं च यमौ च भीमं च दशार्हसिंहः। उवाच दिष्ट्या भवतां शिवेन प्राप्तः किरीटी मुदितः कृतास्त्रः
The lion of the Dasharhas spoke to Dhaumya, Krishna, Yudhishthira, the twins, and Bhima: 'By good fortune, the diademed one has returned to you, joyful and accomplished in arms.'
स पूजयित्वा मधुहा यथाव- त्पार्थांश्च कृष्णां च पुरोहितं च। उवाच राजानमभिप्रशंसन् युधिष्ठिरं तेन सहोपविश्य
Having duly honored the Pandavas, Krishna, and the priest, Madhusudana praised the king and sat together with Yudhishthira.
धर्मः परः पाण्डव राज्यलाभा- त्तस्यादिमाहुस्तप एव राजन्। सत्यार्जवाभ्यां चरता स्वधर्मं जितस्त्वयाऽचं परश्च लोकः
'O Pandava, righteousness is supreme, even above the gain of a kingdom; its origin, O king, is said to be in austerity. By truth and sincerity, following your own duty, you have conquered both this world and the next.'
अधीतमग्रे चरता व्रतानि सम्यग्धनुर्वेदमवाप्य कृत्स्नम्। क्षात्रेण धर्मेण वसूनि लब्ध्वा सर्वे ह्यवाप्ताः क्रतवः पुराणाः
'Having first studied and practiced vows, having thoroughly mastered the science of archery, and having acquired wealth through the warrior's law, all the ancient sacrifices have indeed been attained.'
