'This must never be used among men under any circumstances; if cast upon one of little power, it would consume the world.'
'When you are beset by mighty foes, O Dhananjaya, or to counter other weapons, then and only then may you employ it.'
Then, the divine, irresistible weapon, which counters all missiles, took form and stood at my side as the Bull-bannered God looked on with favor.
It is for the destruction of enemies, the cutting down of hostile armies, unconquerable and insurmountable even by gods, asuras, or rakshasas.
Having been permitted by him, I sat down right there, and as I watched, the God vanished on the spot.
Then, O Bharata, delighted, I spent that night there by the grace of the great-souled Tryambaka, Lord of gods.
Having passed the night and performed the morning rites, I saw again that best of twice-born whom I had seen before.
To him I recounted everything as it had happened, telling him, 'I have met the blessed Mahadeva,' O Bharata.
That best of Brahmins, pleased, said to me, 'You have seen Mahadeva as no one else ever has.'
'You will see Indra, Lord of the gods, surrounded by all the guardians of the worlds, including Vaivasvata, and he will give you weapons.'
Having spoken thus, O King, that Brahmin, radiant as the sun, embraced me again and again and then departed as he wished.
Then, in the afternoon of that day, a sacred breeze began to blow, as if making the world new again, O subduer of foes.
And there appeared nearby, at the foot of the snowy mountain, divine and fragrant garlands, fresh and new.
All around, divine instruments resounded with sweet tones, and enchanting hymns accompanied by Indra's praise were heard.
There, the hosts of Apsaras and Gandharvas sang songs in front of the God of gods, performing together in every way.
And the hosts of Maruts arrived there in their divine vehicles, along with the followers of Mahendra and those who dwell in the abodes of the gods.
Then the lord of the Maruts arrived there, accompanied by Śacī and all the immortals, riding splendidly adorned vehicles drawn by celestial steeds.
At that very moment, O King, Kubera, the lord of wealth, appeared before me, radiant with supreme splendor.
In the southern direction, I beheld Yama stationed, and Varuṇa, the king of the gods, each standing in their proper place.
Those foremost among the gods, having comforted me, O great king, said: 'Savyasācin, behold us, the guardians of the worlds, assembled here.'
For the accomplishment of the gods’ purpose, you have seen Śaṅkara; now, from us as well, receive weapons on every side.
Then, having purified myself, I bowed to those foremost of the gods and received from them, at that time, great and various weapons.
Having received the weapons from the gods, I was granted their permission, O Bhārata; then all the gods departed as they had come, O subduer of foes.
Then the illustrious god Maghavan, smiling slightly, had me ascend his radiant chariot and spoke these words to me.
Even before you came here, O Dhanañjaya, I knew you; therefore, O bull among the Bharatas, I now reveal myself to you.
For you have often performed ablutions at holy places, and this great austerity of yours is fulfilled, O Pāṇḍava; you will attain heaven.
Yet again, you must undertake supreme and arduous austerity, difficult and fearsome, which will grant you the power of weapons.
You must certainly attain heaven, O destroyer of foes; by my command, Mātali will bring you to the celestial realm.
For you are known among the gods and the great sages, O best of the Pāṇḍavas, as one who, standing here, performs exceedingly difficult austerity.
Then I said to Śakra: 'Be gracious to me, lord; I choose you as my teacher for the sake of weapons, O lord of the gods.'
