When, with Dhaumya’s approval, the great-souled Jishnu took up matted hair and became an ascetic, their joy vanished at once—how could pleasure remain for those whose minds followed him?
By the command of Yudhishthira, from the forest, he departed like a mighty elephant; when Jishnu left Kamyaka, they were struck by sorrow at that very moment.
Thus, as they thought of him—white-horsed, seeking weapons, accompanied by Vasava—time passed with great difficulty for the Bharatas on that mountain, O descendant of Bharata.
After dwelling five years in the abode of the thousand-eyed one, he obtained all the divine weapons from the lord of the gods.
He gained the weapons of Agni, Varuna, Soma, Vayu, Vishnu, Indra, Pashupati, Brahma, Parameshthi, and Prajapati.
He received those of Yama, Dhata, Savita, Tvashta, and Vaishravana; having obtained them from the thousand-eyed one, he saluted Shatakratu.
Permitted by him, and having circumambulated, Arjuna joyfully and delightedly returned to Gandhamadana.
Then, once, the great Indra’s vehicle, yoked with Hari, suddenly arrived; seeing its lightning brilliance, the great warriors felt joy as they thought of Arjuna.
Radiant, swiftly illuminating the sky, held by Matali, it shone like a great meteor within the clouds, like a smokeless flame of fire.
Mounted upon it, the crowned one was seen, adorned with a garland and new ornaments; Dhananjaya, possessing Indra’s splendor, blazing with glory, approached the mountain.
He reached the mountain, crowned and garlanded, descended from Indra’s vehicle, and first bowed to Dhaumya’s feet, then to Ajatasatru’s, and afterwards to the others.
He also reverently bowed to the feet of Bhimasena and the sons of Madri; meeting Krishna, he comforted her, and humbly stood before his brother.
There arose supreme joy among them, as he joined them with immeasurable delight; and seeing them, the crowned one rejoiced, praising the king.
Mounted upon it, he slew seven bands of Diti’s sons, destroyer of Namuci; approaching Indra’s vehicle, the Pandavas circled it with undaunted spirits.
They honored Matali with great joy, giving him the highest respect, equal to the king of the gods; the sons of the Kurus asked him everything, just as the hosts of heaven would.
Matali too rejoiced over them, instructing the Pandavas as a father delights in his sons; then he departed in his peerlessly radiant chariot, returning to the lord of heaven.
When he who bore the best of gods as his vehicle had departed, the son of Indra, destroyer of all foes, radiant as Indra himself, glorious, released himself from his own form, O conqueror.
The great-souled one, pleased, gave to his beloved wife, the mother of Sutasoma, the immense and most beautiful treasures and ornaments shining like the sun, which had been given by Indra.
Then, among those foremost of Kurus and among those radiant as the sun and fire, seated in the midst of the eminent Brahmins, he began to recount everything exactly as it had happened.
Thus I have learned the weapons directly from Indra, Vayu, and Shiva; and by my conduct and concentration, the gods together with Indra have been pleased with me.
Briefly relating to them his entry into heaven, that doer of pure deeds, the diademed one, confident, slept there together with the sons of Madri.
Then, when night had passed, Dhananjaya, together with all his brothers, paid homage to King Yudhishthira, the lord of righteousness.
At that very moment, a tumultuous sound of all kinds of instruments arose in the sky, resounding among the gods.
There was the sound of chariot wheels, the ringing of bells, and the cries of various wild beasts and birds everywhere, O Bharata.
Looking upward, those delighted Kurus beheld Indra, accompanied by the Maruts, descending through the sky.
All around, Gandharvas and Apsaras followed the king of the gods, the subduer of enemies, in aerial chariots shining like the sun.
Then he, blazing with supreme splendor, ascended the Megha-nada chariot, adorned with gold and drawn by celestial steeds.
Swiftly, the lord of the gods, Purandara, approached the sons of Pritha, and the thousand-eyed one descended from his chariot.
Seeing that great-souled one, King Yudhishthira, together with his brothers, glorious, approached the king of the gods.
Then, with proper rites and abundant gifts, he worshipped the immeasurable one as was fitting, performing the prescribed acts.
