मयूरहंसस्वननादितानि पुष्पोपकीर्णानि महाचलस्य। शृङ्गाणि सानूनि च पश्यमाना गिरेः परं हर्षमवाप्य तस्थुः
Seeing the peaks and slopes of the great mountain, resounding with the cries of peacocks and swans and strewn with flowers, they stood, filled with immense joy.
साक्षात्कुबेरेण कृताश्च तस्मि- न्नगोत्तमे संवृतकूटगुल्माः। कादम्बकारण्डवहंसजुष्टाः पद्माकुलाः पुष्करिणीरपश्यन्
On that excellent mountain, they saw lakes covered with lotus, frequented by kadamba, karandava, and swans, their banks concealed by thickets, made by Kubera himself.
क्रीडाप्रदेशांस्च समृद्धरूपा- न्सवेदिकांस्ते न्यवसन्सुवेशान्। मणिप्रकीर्णांश्च मनोरमांश्च यथा भवेयुर्नदस्य राज्ञः
They dwelled in splendid places for play, furnished with platforms, adorned with gems, delightful, as might belong to the king of rivers.
अनेकवर्णैश् सुगन्धिभिश्च महाद्रुमैः संततमभ्रजालैः। तपःप्रधानाः सततं चरन्तः शृङ्गं गिरेश्चिन्तयितुं न शेकुः
With many-colored, fragrant great trees, thick as clouds, those devoted to austerity always wandered, yet could not contemplate the mountain's peak.
स्वतेजसा तस्य नगोत्तमस्य महौषधीनां च तथा प्रभावात्। विभक्तरूपः सविता बभूव निशामुखं प्राप्य नरर्षभाणाम्
By the radiance of that excellent mountain and the power of its great herbs, Savitā appeared in a distinct form, as dawn approached among the best of men.
यमास्थितः स्थावरजङ्गमानां विभावसुर्भाविता हरीशः। तस्योदयं चास्तमनं च वीर- स्तत्रस्थितास्ते ददृशुर्नृसिंहाः
Having assumed the form that nourishes stationary and moving beings, the fire-god, lord of the winds, inspired them; those lion-hearted men saw his rising and setting there.
रवेस्तमिस्रागमनिर्गमांस्ते तथोदयं चास्तमनं च वीराः। समावृताः प्रेक्ष्य तमोनुदस्य गभस्तिजालैः प्रदिशो दिशश्च
The heroes observed the coming and going of darkness, the rising and setting of the sun, and, surrounded, saw the directions and quarters illuminated by his rays, dispelling gloom.
स्वाध्यायवन्तः सततक्रियाश्च धर्मप्रधानाश्च शुचिव्रताश्च। सत्ये स्थितास्तस्य महारथस्य सत्यव्रतस्यागमनप्रतीक्षाः
Steadfast in recitation, constant in ritual, devoted to righteousness, pure in vows, established in truth, they awaited the arrival of that great chariot-warrior, true in vow.
इहैव हर्षोऽस्तु समागतानां क्षिप्रं कृतास्त्रेण धनंजयेन। इति ब्रुवन्तः परमाशिपस्ते पार्थास्तपोयोगपरा बभूवुः
Here, let joy be among those gathered, for wealth will soon be won by Dhananjaya, who has mastered weapons. Speaking thus, the noble archers, the Pandavas, devoted themselves to austerity and yoga.
दृष्ट्वा विचित्राणि गिरौ वनानि किरीटिनं चिन्तयतामभीक्ष्णम्। बभूव राविर्दिवसश्च तेषां संवत्सरेणैव समानरूपः
Seeing the wondrous forests on the mountain, the crowned one pondered deeply; for them, the sun and day became alike throughout the year.
यदैव धौम्यानुमते महात्मा कृत्वा जटां प्रव्रजितः स जिष्णुः। तदैव तेषां नबभूव हर्षः कुतो रतिस्तद्गतमानसानाम्
When, with Dhaumya’s approval, the great-souled Jishnu took up matted hair and became an ascetic, their joy vanished at once—how could pleasure remain for those whose minds followed him?
भ्रातुर्नियोगात्तु युधिष्ठिरस्य वनादसौ वारणमत्तगामी। यत्काम्यकात्प्रव्रजितः स जिष्णु- स्तदैव ते शोकहता बभूवुः
By the command of Yudhishthira, from the forest, he departed like a mighty elephant; when Jishnu left Kamyaka, they were struck by sorrow at that very moment.
तथैव तं चिन्तयतां सिताश्व- मस्त्रार्थिनं वासवमभ्युपेतम्। कालः स कृच्छ्रेण महानतीत- स्तस्मिन्नगे भारत भारतानाम्
Thus, as they thought of him—white-horsed, seeking weapons, accompanied by Vasava—time passed with great difficulty for the Bharatas on that mountain, O descendant of Bharata.
[उषित्वा पञ्चवर्षाणि सहस्राक्षनिवेशने। अवाप्य दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि सर्वाणि विबुधेश्वरात्
After dwelling five years in the abode of the thousand-eyed one, he obtained all the divine weapons from the lord of the gods.
आग्नेयं वारुणं सौम्यं वायव्यमथ वैष्णवम्। ऐन्द्रं पाशुपतं ब्राह्मं पारमेष्ठ्यं प्रजापतेः
He gained the weapons of Agni, Varuna, Soma, Vayu, Vishnu, Indra, Pashupati, Brahma, Parameshthi, and Prajapati.
यमस्य धातुः सवितुस्त्वष्टुर्वैश्रवणस्य चं। तानि प्राप्य सहस्राक्षादभिवाद्य शतक्रतुम्
He received those of Yama, Dhata, Savita, Tvashta, and Vaishravana; having obtained them from the thousand-eyed one, he saluted Shatakratu.
अनुज्ञातस्तदा तेन कृत्वा चापि प्रदक्षिणम्। आगच्छदर्जुनः प्रीतः प्रहृष्टो गन्धपादनम्
Permitted by him, and having circumambulated, Arjuna joyfully and delightedly returned to Gandhamadana.
ततः कदाचिद्धरिसंप्रयुक्तं महेन्द्रवाहं सहसोपयातम्। विद्युत्प्रभं प्रेक्ष्य महारथानां हर्षोऽर्जुनं चिन्तयतां बभूव
Then, once, the great Indra’s vehicle, yoked with Hari, suddenly arrived; seeing its lightning brilliance, the great warriors felt joy as they thought of Arjuna.
स दीप्यमानः सहसाऽन्तरिक्षं प्रकाशयन्मातलिसंगृहीतः। बभौ महोल्केव घनान्तरस्था शिखेव चाग्नेर्ज्वलिता विधूमा
Radiant, swiftly illuminating the sky, held by Matali, it shone like a great meteor within the clouds, like a smokeless flame of fire.
तमास्थितः संददृशे किरीटी स्रग्वी नवान्याभरणानि बिभ्रत्। धनंजयो वज्रधरप्रभावः श्रिया ज्वलन्पर्वतमाजगाम्
Mounted upon it, the crowned one was seen, adorned with a garland and new ornaments; Dhananjaya, possessing Indra’s splendor, blazing with glory, approached the mountain.
स शैलमासाद्य किरीटमाली महेन्द्रवाहादवरुह्य तस्मात्। धौम्यस्य पादावभिवाद्य पूर्व- मजातशत्रोस्तदनन्तरं च
He reached the mountain, crowned and garlanded, descended from Indra’s vehicle, and first bowed to Dhaumya’s feet, then to Ajatasatru’s, and afterwards to the others.
वृकोदरस्यापि च वन्द्य पादौ माद्रीसुताभ्यामभिवादितश्च। समेत्य कृष्णां परिसान्त्व्य चैनां प्रह्वोऽभवद्भ्रातुरुपह्वरे सः
He also reverently bowed to the feet of Bhimasena and the sons of Madri; meeting Krishna, he comforted her, and humbly stood before his brother.
बभूव तेषां परमः प्रहर्ष- स्तेनाप्रमेयेण समेत्य तत्र। स चापि तान्प्रेक्ष्य किरीटमाली ननन्द राजानमभिप्रशंसन्
There arose supreme joy among them, as he joined them with immeasurable delight; and seeing them, the crowned one rejoiced, praising the king.
यमास्थितः सप्त जघान पूगान् दितेः सुतानां नमुचेर्निहन्ता। तमिन्द्रवाहं समुपेत्य पार्थाः प्रदक्षिणं चक्रुरदीनसत्वाः
Mounted upon it, he slew seven bands of Diti’s sons, destroyer of Namuci; approaching Indra’s vehicle, the Pandavas circled it with undaunted spirits.
ते मातलेश्चक्रुरतीव हृष्टाः सत्कारमग्र्यं सुरराजतुल्यम्। सर्वं यथावच्च दिवौकसङ्घं पप्रच्युरेनं कुरुराजपुत्राः
They honored Matali with great joy, giving him the highest respect, equal to the king of the gods; the sons of the Kurus asked him everything, just as the hosts of heaven would.
तानप्यसौ मातलिरभ्यनन्द- त्पितेव पुत्राननुशिष्य पार्थान्। ययौ रथेनाप्रतिमप्रभेण पुनः सकाशं त्रिदिवेश्वरस्य
Matali too rejoiced over them, instructing the Pandavas as a father delights in his sons; then he departed in his peerlessly radiant chariot, returning to the lord of heaven.
गते तु तस्मिन्वरदेववाहे शक्रात्मजः सर्वरिपुप्रमाथी। `साक्षात्सहस्राक्ष इव प्रतीतः श्रीमान्स्वदेहादवमुच्य जिष्णुः
When he who bore the best of gods as his vehicle had departed, the son of Indra, destroyer of all foes, radiant as Indra himself, glorious, released himself from his own form, O conqueror.
शक्रेण दत्तानिददौ महात्मा महाधनान्युत्तमरूपवन्ति। दिवाकराभाणि विभूषणानि प्रीतः प्रियायै सुतसोममात्रे
The great-souled one, pleased, gave to his beloved wife, the mother of Sutasoma, the immense and most beautiful treasures and ornaments shining like the sun, which had been given by Indra.
ततऋः स तेषां कुरुपुङ्गवानां तेषां च सूर्याग्निसमप्रभाणाम्। विप्रर्षभाणामुपविश्य मध्ये सर्वं यथावत्कथयांबभूव
Then, among those foremost of Kurus and among those radiant as the sun and fire, seated in the midst of the eminent Brahmins, he began to recount everything exactly as it had happened.
एवं मयाऽस्त्राण्युपशिक्षितानि शक्राच्च वायोश्च शिवाच्च साक्षात्। तथैव शीलेन समाधिना च प्रीताः सुरा मे सहिताः सहेन्द्राः
Thus I have learned the weapons directly from Indra, Vayu, and Shiva; and by my conduct and concentration, the gods together with Indra have been pleased with me.
