स्थानमेतन्महाभाव ध्रुवमक्षयमव्ययम्। ईश्वरस्य सदा ह्येतत्प्रणमात्र युधिष्ठिर
This is the place, O mighty one, that is fixed, imperishable, and eternal; it always belongs to the Lord, O Yudhishthira, merely by bowing.
[एनं त्वहरहर्मेरुं सूर्याचन्द्रमसौ ध्रुवम्। प्रदक्षिणमुपावृत्यकुरुतः कुरुनन्दन
[Every day, O son of the Kurus, Meru, the sun, the moon, and the pole star revolve around it in a clockwise direction.]
ज्योतींषि चाप्यशेषेण सर्वाण्यनघ सर्वतः। परियान्ति महाराज गिरिराजं प्रदक्षिणम् ।।]
And, O sinless one, all the luminaries, without exception, circle the king of mountains in a clockwise direction from every side.
एतं ज्योतींषि सर्वाणि प्रकर्षन्भगवानपि। कुरुते वितमस्कर्मा आदित्योऽभिप्रदक्षिणम्
Drawing all these lights along, the blessed sun, free from sin, also circles it in a clockwise direction.
अस्तं प्राप्य ततः सन्ध्यामतिक्रम्य दिवाकरः। उदीचीं भजते काष्ठां बहुधा पर्वसन्धिषु
Having reached the setting, then passing beyond twilight, the sun moves toward the northern quarter in many ways at the junctions of the seasons.
सुमेरुमनुवृत्तः स पुनर्गच्छति पाण्डव। प्राङ्युखः सविता देवः सर्वभूतहिते रतः
Following Mount Sumeru, O Pandava, the sun god again proceeds eastward, intent on the welfare of all beings.
स सम्यग्विभजन्कालान्बहुधा पर्वसन्धिषु। तथैव भगवान्सोमो नक्षत्रैः सह गच्छति
Dividing time properly in many ways at the junctions of the seasons, so too does the blessed Soma (moon) move along with the constellations.
एवमेतं त्वतिक्रम्य महामेरुमतन्द्रितः। सोमश्च विभजन्कालं बहुधा पर्वसन्धिषु। भासयन्सर्वभूतानि पुनर्गच्छति सागरम्
In this way, tirelessly surpassing great Meru, Soma also divides time in many ways at the seasonal junctions, illuminating all beings, and again proceeds to the ocean.
तथा तमिस्रहा देवो मयूखैर्भासयञ्जगत्। मार्गमेतमसंबाधमादित्यः परिवर्तते
Likewise, the god who dispels darkness, illuminating the world with his rays, the sun moves along this path, which is free from obstacles.
सिसृक्षुः शिशिराण्येव दक्षिणां भजते दिशम्। ततः सर्वाणि भूतानि कालं शिशिरमृच्छति
Desiring to produce the cold seasons, he turns toward the southern direction; then all beings experience the time called winter.
स्थावराणां च भूतानां जङ्गमानां च तेजसा। तेजांसि समुपादत्ते निवृत्तः स विभावसुः
When the fire withdraws, it gathers the energies of both stationary and moving beings.
ततः स्वेदः क्लमस्तन्द्री ग्लानिश्च भजते नरान्। प्राणिभिः सततं स्वप्नोह्यभीक्ष्णं च निपेव्यते
Then sweat, fatigue, lethargy, and exhaustion afflict men; sleep is constantly experienced by living creatures.
एवमेतमनिर्देश्यं मार्गमावृत्य भानुमान्। पुनः सृजति वर्षाणि भगवान्भासयन्प्रजाः
Thus, having blocked this indescribable path, the sun again produces rains, illuminating the beings.
वृष्टिमारुतसंतापैः सुखैः स्थावरजङ्गमान्। वर्धयनसुमहातेजाः पुनः प्रतिनिवर्तते
With rain, wind, heat, and pleasures, the one of great brilliance nourishes stationary and moving beings, then again withdraws.
एवमेष चरन्पार्थ कालचक्रमतन्द्रितः। प्रकर्षन्सर्वभूतानि सविता परिवर्तते
Thus, O Partha, moving tirelessly through the wheel of time, Savitā revolves, propelling all creatures.
संतता गतिरेतस्य नैष तिष्ठति पाण्डव। आदायैव तु भूतानां तेजो विसृजते पुनः
The movement of this one is continuous, O Pāṇḍava; he does not remain still, but having taken the energy of beings, he releases it again.
विभजन्सर्वभूतानामायुः कर्म च भारत। अहोरात्रं कलाः काष्ठाः सृजत्येष सदा विभुः
Dividing the lifespan and actions of all beings, O Bhārata, this mighty one always creates day and night, moments, and hours.
तस्मिन्नगेन्द्रे वसतां तु तेषां महात्मनां सद्व्रतमास्थितानाम्। रतिः प्रमोदश्च बभूव तेषा- माकाङ्क्षतां दर्शनमर्जुनस्य
Dwelling on that great mountain, those high-souled ones who observed noble vows found delight and joy, longing for the sight of Arjuna.
तान्वीर्ययुक्तान्सुविशुद्धसत्वां- स्तेजस्विनः सत्यधृतिप्रधानान्। संप्रीयमाणा बहवोऽबिजग्मु- र्गन्धर्वसङ्घाश्च महर्षयश्च
Many Gandharva groups and great sages, rejoicing, approached those powerful, pure-hearted, radiant ones, foremost in truth and steadfastness.
तं पादपैः पुष्पफलैरुपेतं नगोत्तमं प्राप्य महारथानाम्। मनःप्रसादः परमो बभूव यथा दिवं प्राप्य मरुद्गणानाम्
Upon reaching the excellent mountain adorned with trees bearing flowers and fruits, the great chariot-warriors felt supreme satisfaction, as if the Maruts had reached heaven.
मयूरहंसस्वननादितानि पुष्पोपकीर्णानि महाचलस्य। शृङ्गाणि सानूनि च पश्यमाना गिरेः परं हर्षमवाप्य तस्थुः
Seeing the peaks and slopes of the great mountain, resounding with the cries of peacocks and swans and strewn with flowers, they stood, filled with immense joy.
साक्षात्कुबेरेण कृताश्च तस्मि- न्नगोत्तमे संवृतकूटगुल्माः। कादम्बकारण्डवहंसजुष्टाः पद्माकुलाः पुष्करिणीरपश्यन्
On that excellent mountain, they saw lakes covered with lotus, frequented by kadamba, karandava, and swans, their banks concealed by thickets, made by Kubera himself.
क्रीडाप्रदेशांस्च समृद्धरूपा- न्सवेदिकांस्ते न्यवसन्सुवेशान्। मणिप्रकीर्णांश्च मनोरमांश्च यथा भवेयुर्नदस्य राज्ञः
They dwelled in splendid places for play, furnished with platforms, adorned with gems, delightful, as might belong to the king of rivers.
अनेकवर्णैश् सुगन्धिभिश्च महाद्रुमैः संततमभ्रजालैः। तपःप्रधानाः सततं चरन्तः शृङ्गं गिरेश्चिन्तयितुं न शेकुः
With many-colored, fragrant great trees, thick as clouds, those devoted to austerity always wandered, yet could not contemplate the mountain's peak.
स्वतेजसा तस्य नगोत्तमस्य महौषधीनां च तथा प्रभावात्। विभक्तरूपः सविता बभूव निशामुखं प्राप्य नरर्षभाणाम्
By the radiance of that excellent mountain and the power of its great herbs, Savitā appeared in a distinct form, as dawn approached among the best of men.
यमास्थितः स्थावरजङ्गमानां विभावसुर्भाविता हरीशः। तस्योदयं चास्तमनं च वीर- स्तत्रस्थितास्ते ददृशुर्नृसिंहाः
Having assumed the form that nourishes stationary and moving beings, the fire-god, lord of the winds, inspired them; those lion-hearted men saw his rising and setting there.
रवेस्तमिस्रागमनिर्गमांस्ते तथोदयं चास्तमनं च वीराः। समावृताः प्रेक्ष्य तमोनुदस्य गभस्तिजालैः प्रदिशो दिशश्च
The heroes observed the coming and going of darkness, the rising and setting of the sun, and, surrounded, saw the directions and quarters illuminated by his rays, dispelling gloom.
स्वाध्यायवन्तः सततक्रियाश्च धर्मप्रधानाश्च शुचिव्रताश्च। सत्ये स्थितास्तस्य महारथस्य सत्यव्रतस्यागमनप्रतीक्षाः
Steadfast in recitation, constant in ritual, devoted to righteousness, pure in vows, established in truth, they awaited the arrival of that great chariot-warrior, true in vow.
इहैव हर्षोऽस्तु समागतानां क्षिप्रं कृतास्त्रेण धनंजयेन। इति ब्रुवन्तः परमाशिपस्ते पार्थास्तपोयोगपरा बभूवुः
Here, let joy be among those gathered, for wealth will soon be won by Dhananjaya, who has mastered weapons. Speaking thus, the noble archers, the Pandavas, devoted themselves to austerity and yoga.
दृष्ट्वा विचित्राणि गिरौ वनानि किरीटिनं चिन्तयतामभीक्ष्णम्। बभूव राविर्दिवसश्च तेषां संवत्सरेणैव समानरूपः
Seeing the wondrous forests on the mountain, the crowned one pondered deeply; for them, the sun and day became alike throughout the year.
