Having worshipped the ancestors, gods, sages, and brahmins, the illustrious one performed seven principal sacrifices on the banks of the Yamuna.
That emperor, your great-grandfather Santanu, now dwelling in Indra's realm after conquering heaven, inquires about your welfare.
Hearing these words spoken by the lord of wealth, the Pandavas then became exceedingly delighted.
Then Vrikodara, the bull among the Bharatas, having placed his spear, mace, sword, and bow before him, offered obeisance to Kubera.
Then the lord of wealth, the refuge of those who seek shelter, spoke to the one who had come for refuge: 'Be the destroyer of your enemies' pride and the increaser of your friends' joy.'
Dwelling with your kinsmen atop the mountain, free from fear and distress, always bring honor to the Suparnas, ancestors, and gods.
See what is straight, not crooked; speak what is true, not false; look to what is long, not short; look to what is supreme, not inferior.
While you dwell in your own pleasant abodes, O bulls among the Bharatas, the Yakshas will not withhold your desires.
Very soon, Gudakesha, accomplished in arms and released directly by Maghavat, will obtain Arjuna.
Thus instructing Yudhishthira in supreme conduct, the lord of the Guhyakas departed like the sun setting behind the mountain.
Then thousands of Yakshas and Rakshasas, adorned with various gems and accompanied by songs of praise, followed him in their vehicles.
Their sound was like the cry of birds as they proceeded toward Kubera's abode, along the path of the supreme steeds, as on the road of Airavata.
The horses of the lord of wealth swiftly traversed the sky, as if dragging away the clouds and drinking the wind.
Then, by the command of the lord of wealth, the lifeless bodies of the Rakshasas were removed from the mountain peak.
For the period of their curse had been set by the wise Agastya; when they were slain in battle, the curse ended at that time.
The great-souled Pandavas spent that night in those dwellings, at ease and free from anxiety, honored together with the Rakshasas.
Then, at sunrise, Dhaumya approached the Pandavas, accompanied by the Panchalas and by Arstishena.
They greeted Arstishena and Dhaumya by touching their feet; then, with joined palms, all the Pandavas honored those Brahmins.
Embracing Arstishena like a son, O bull among Bharatas, the great ascetic touched Dharmaraja's hand with his own, looked toward the eastern direction, and spoke these words.
Behold, O great king, the mountain king Mandara stands, covering the earth up to the ocean, shining forth; with Indra and Kubera, he protects the eastern quarter, O Pandava.
Adorned with mountains, forest groves, and woodlands, this region is said by all the sages, wise in all dharmas, to belong to Mahendra and King Vaishravana.
Here, all creatures, as well as the dharma-knowing sages, the perfected beings, and the Sadhyas, worship the rising sun.
Yama, the king and knower of dharma, lord of all living beings, has taken up the southern direction, the realm of departed spirits.
This is the sacred realm of restraint, wondrous to behold, the abode of the king of the dead, endowed with supreme prosperity.
Upon reaching this place, O king, the sun stands firm by truth; the wise call this mountain king the place of sunset.
Thus, the mountain king and the great ocean are the dwelling of King Varuna, who protects all beings.
Illuminating the northern direction stands the glorious Mahameru, blessed and auspicious, the path of those who know Brahman.
On which the assembly of Brahma and the soul of all beings reside, and Prajapati creates all that moves and is still.
Those whom they call the mind-born sons of Brahma, the seven of Daksha, for them too Mahameru is a blessed and flawless abode.
Here, the seven divine sages, headed by Vasistha, stand firm and rise again, O dear one.
