The illustrious lord of the rakshasas, named Maniman, my friend, out of foolishness, ignorance, pride, and delusion, O king—
He, flying like a pestle, landed on the head of that great sage; then, enraged, the blessed ascetic spoke these words.
Because your wicked-hearted friend, disregarding me, has committed this outrage, O lord of wealth, behold the consequence.
And you, with your slain armies, shall suffer distress, O unfortunate one; when you see that man, you will be freed from your sin.
But among your armies, those with sons and grandsons will not incur this terrible curse; go, he will act according to his own ignorance.
This curse was received by me earlier from that foremost sage; by Bhima, O king, your brother, it has been lifted.
O Yudhishthira, resolve, skill, valor suited to place and time, and the arrangements of worldly customs—this is the fivefold rule.
Those who were steadfast and skilled in their own duties, and knew the methods of valor, O Bharata, existed in the Krita age.
A Kshatriya who is steadfast, knows place and time, and is versed in all the rules of duty, O best of Kshatriyas, truly governs the earth.
O Partha, a person who acts in this way in all undertakings, O hero, attains fame in this world and, after death, a blessed state.
Desiring to reach another place and time, Indra, having displayed his prowess, attained the sovereignty of the three worlds along with the Vasus.
But he who, out of mere recklessness, does not consider the consequences, who is wicked in soul and mind, who follows only evil, and who does not discern among actions, perishes both here and after death.
He who does not know the proper time, who has very poor understanding, who cannot distinguish among actions, and who undertakes fruitless efforts, perishes both here and after death.
For those who act rashly, who are deceitful and wicked, and who are greedy for wealth, sin is certain.
This Bhimasena, ignorant of righteousness, arrogant, childish in mind, and impatient, is fearless; O best of men, restrain him.
Having reached the greater hermitage of the royal sage Arstishena, dwell there, free from sorrow and fear, in that first darkness.
I will go to Alaka with the Gandharvas, Yakshas, and Kinnaras, O mighty-armed one, and you should proceed to Badari.
O king of men, all the mountain-dwellers, appointed by me, together with the best of twice-born, will protect you, O mighty-armed one.
While Bhimasena stands ready for bold deeds on the mountain, let this noble one be restrained by you, O king, foremost upholder of righteousness.
From now on, O king, the forest-dwellers will see you, attend upon you, and always protect you.
In the same way, my attendants, O best of men, will always bring you delicious and varied food and drink.
Just as Jishnu is the son of Mahendra, as Vrikodara is of Vayu, so, dear one, you are the true son of Dharma, born through yoga.
Just as the two sons of Ashvins, endowed with their own qualities, are protected, so too, O Yudhishthira, may you all be protected here by me.
Arjuna, younger brother of Bhimasena, skilled in the essence of wealth and the rules of all duties, is well in heaven.
All the highest, heavenly treasures that are esteemed in the world, from people onward, O dear one, are established in Dhananjaya.
Self-restraint, generosity, strength, intelligence, modesty, steadfastness, and supreme energy—all these virtues abide in that great-souled, immeasurably radiant one.
O Pandava, Jishnu does not, out of delusion, perform any blameworthy act; nor does Partha speak words among men that are false.
That increaser of the Kurus' fame, brought by the gods, ancestors, and Gandharvas to the mansion of Indra, acquires weapons there, O Bharata.
He who subdued all the kings of the earth by righteousness—Santanu of great splendor—was your great-grandfather, the father of your father.
Partha, the wielder of Gandiva, is beloved in heaven by Partha; he stands firmly, like the foremost pillar of his lineage, endowed with great might.
