यदिदं साहसं भीम कृष्णार्थे कृतवानसि। मामनादृत्य देवांश्च विनाशं यक्षरक्षसाम्
O Bhima, this daring act you have performed for Krishna's sake, disregarding me, the gods, and the destruction of the yakshas and rakshasas—
स्वबाहुबलमाश्रित्य तेनाहं प्रीतिमांस्त्वयि। शापादद्य विनिर्मुक्तो घोरादस्माद्वृकोदर
Relying on the strength of your own arms, because of this I am pleased with you; today, O Vrikodara, I am freed from this terrible curse.
अहं पूर्वमगस्त्येन क्रुद्धेन परमर्षिणा। शप्तोऽपराधे कस्मिंश्चित्तस्यैषा निष्कृतिर्ध्रुवम्
Previously, I was cursed by the great sage Agastya, who was angered by some offense; this is certainly the expiation for that.
दृष्टो हि मम संक्लेशः पुरा पाण्डवनन्दन। न तवात्रापराधोस्ति कथंचिदपि पाण्डव
O joy of the Pandavas, my suffering was seen before; O Pandava, you have no fault here in any way.
कथं शप्तोसि भगवन्नगस्त्येन महात्मना। श्रोतुमिच्छाम्यहं देव यथैतच्छापकारणम्
How were you cursed, O blessed one, by the great-souled Agastya? I wish to hear, O lord, the reason for that curse.
इदं चाश्चर्यभूतं मे यत्क्रोधात्तस् धीमतः। तदैव त्वं न निर्दग्धः सबलः सपदानुगः
This is astonishing to me, that from the wrath of that wise one, you were not instantly burned up, along with your forces and followers.
देवतानामभून्मन्त्रः कुशावत्यां नरेश्वर

वृतस्तत्राहमगमं महापद्मशतैस्त्रिभिः। यक्षाणआं घोररूपाणां विविधायुधधारिणाम्

अध्वन्यहमथापश्यमगस्त्यमृपिसत्तमम्। उग्रं तपस्तप्यभानं यमुनातीरमाश्रितम्। नानापक्षिगणाकीर्णं पुष्पितद्रुमशोभितम्

तमूर्द्वबाहुं दृष्ट्वैव सूर्यस्याभिमुखे स्थितम्। तेजोराशिं दीप्यमानं हुताशनमिवैधितम्
Seeing him standing with raised arms, facing the sun, a mass of radiance blazing like a sacrificial fire set ablaze—
राक्षसाधिपतिः श्रीमान्मणिमान्नाम मे सखा। मौर्क्यादज्ञानभावाच्च दर्पान्मोहाच्च पार्थिव
The illustrious lord of the rakshasas, named Maniman, my friend, out of foolishness, ignorance, pride, and delusion, O king—
न्यष्ठीवदाकाशगतो महर्षेस्तस्य मूर्धनि। ततः क्रुद्धः स भगवानुवाचेदं तपोधनः
He, flying like a pestle, landed on the head of that great sage; then, enraged, the blessed ascetic spoke these words.
मामवज्ञाय दुष्टात्मा यस्मादेष सखा तव। धर्षणां कृतवानेतां पश्यतस्ते धनेश्वर
Because your wicked-hearted friend, disregarding me, has committed this outrage, O lord of wealth, behold the consequence.
त्वं चाप्येभिर्हतैः सैन्यैः क्लेशं प्राप्नुहि दुर्भते। तमेव मानुषं दृष्ट्वाकिल्विषाद्विप्रमोक्ष्यसे
And you, with your slain armies, shall suffer distress, O unfortunate one; when you see that man, you will be freed from your sin.
सैन्यानां तु तवैतेषां पुत्रपौत्रबलान्वितम्। न शापं प्राप्यते घोरं गच्छ तेऽऽज्ञां करिष्यति
But among your armies, those with sons and grandsons will not incur this terrible curse; go, he will act according to his own ignorance.
एष शापो मया प्राप्तः प्राक्तस्मादृषिसत्तमात्। स भीमेन महाराज भ्रात्रा तव विमोक्षितः
This curse was received by me earlier from that foremost sage; by Bhima, O king, your brother, it has been lifted.
युधिष्ठिर धृतिर्दाक्ष्यं देशकालपराक्रमाः। लोकतन्त्रविधानानामेष पञ्चविधो विधिः
O Yudhishthira, resolve, skill, valor suited to place and time, and the arrangements of worldly customs—this is the fivefold rule.
धृतिमन्तश्च दक्षाश्च स्वे स्वे कर्मणि भारत। पराक्रमविधानज्ञा नराः कृतयुगेऽभवन्
Those who were steadfast and skilled in their own duties, and knew the methods of valor, O Bharata, existed in the Krita age.
धृतिमान्देशकालज्ञः सर्वधर्मविधानवित्। क्षत्रियः क्षत्रियश्रेष्ठ शास्ति वै पृथिवीमनु
A Kshatriya who is steadfast, knows place and time, and is versed in all the rules of duty, O best of Kshatriyas, truly governs the earth.
य एवं वर्तते पार्थ पुरुषः सर्वकर्मसु। स लोके लभते वीर यशः प्रेत्य च सद्गतिम्
O Partha, a person who acts in this way in all undertakings, O hero, attains fame in this world and, after death, a blessed state.
देशकालान्तरप्रेप्सुः कृत्वा शक्रः पराक्रमम्। संप्राप्तस्त्रिदिवे राज्यं वृत्रहा वसुभिः सह
Desiring to reach another place and time, Indra, having displayed his prowess, attained the sovereignty of the three worlds along with the Vasus.
[यस्तु केवलसंरम्भात्प्रपातं न निरीक्षते।] पापात्मा पापबुद्धिर्यः पापमेवानुवर्तते। कर्मणामविभागज्ञः प्रेत्य चेह विनश्यति
But he who, out of mere recklessness, does not consider the consequences, who is wicked in soul and mind, who follows only evil, and who does not discern among actions, perishes both here and after death.
अकालज्ञः सुदुर्मेधाः कार्याणामविशेषवित्। वृथाचारसमारम्भः प्रेत्य चेह विनश्यति
He who does not know the proper time, who has very poor understanding, who cannot distinguish among actions, and who undertakes fruitless efforts, perishes both here and after death.
साहसे वर्तमानानां निकृतीनां दुरात्मनाम्। सर्वेषामर्थलिप्सूनां पापो भवति निश्चयः
For those who act rashly, who are deceitful and wicked, and who are greedy for wealth, sin is certain.
अधर्मज्ञोऽवलिप्तश्च बालबुद्धिरमर्षणः। निर्भयो भीमसेनोऽयं तं शाधि पुरुषर्षभ
This Bhimasena, ignorant of righteousness, arrogant, childish in mind, and impatient, is fearless; O best of men, restrain him.
आर्ष्टिषेणस् राजर्षेः प्राप्य भूयस्त्वमाश्रमम्। तमिस्रां प्रथमां तत्र वीतशोकभयो वस
Having reached the greater hermitage of the royal sage Arstishena, dwell there, free from sorrow and fear, in that first darkness.
अलकां सह गन्धर्वैर्यक्षैश्च सह किन्नरैः। `गमिष्यामि महाबाहो त्वं चापि बदरीं व्रज
I will go to Alaka with the Gandharvas, Yakshas, and Kinnaras, O mighty-armed one, and you should proceed to Badari.
मन्नियुक्ता मनुष्येन्द्र सर्वे च गिरिवासिनः। रक्षन्तु त्वां महाबाहो सहितं द्विजसत्तमैः
O king of men, all the mountain-dwellers, appointed by me, together with the best of twice-born, will protect you, O mighty-armed one.
साहसेषु च संतिष्ठंस्त्वया शैले वृकोदरः। वार्यतां साध्वयं राजंस्त्वया धर्मभृतांवर
While Bhimasena stands ready for bold deeds on the mountain, let this noble one be restrained by you, O king, foremost upholder of righteousness.
इतः परं च वो राजन्द्रक्ष्यन्ति वनगोचराः। उपश्थास्यन्ति वो राजन्रक्षिष्यन्ते च वः सदा
From now on, O king, the forest-dwellers will see you, attend upon you, and always protect you.
