Clubs, iron bars, swords, spears, and axes, brandished by the arms of Yakshas and Rakshasas, shone forth brilliantly.
Then, O Bharata, battle was joined between them and him.
Those great magical weapons—spears, javelins, and axes—hurled by them, Bhima cut down with arrows swifter than the wind.
The mighty one pierced the bodies of the roaring Rakshasas, both those in the sky and those on the ground, with his arrows.
Then, O Bharata, streams of blood poured from the bodies of the Rakshasas on all sides, falling like rain from clouds; the mighty one drenched them in a great shower of blood.
From the bodies of the Rakshasas, armed with clubs and iron bars, streams of blood flowed on all sides.
Bodies and heads of Yakshas and Rakshasas, severed by the weapons hurled with the strength of Bhima's mighty arms, were seen scattered about.
All beings saw the beloved Pandava, though covered by Rakshasas, as the sun covered by masses of clouds.
With arrows that fell upon his enemies, he shone like the sun with its rays; the mighty, true-hearted hero assailed them all.
As they threatened and roared loudly, all the rakshasas saw Bhimasena preparing for battle.
Struck all over and terrified by Bhimasena, they cried out in anguish, their great weapons scattered.
Abandoning their maces, spears, swords, darts, and axes, frightened by the steadfast archer, they fled toward the southern direction.
There stood a rakshasa named Maniman, friend of Vaisravana, holding a spear and mace, broad-chested and mighty-armed.
Displaying resistance and valor, that powerful one, seeing them turn away, spoke as if smiling.
Many in battle have been defeated by one man; what will you say to the lord of wealth, having reached Vaisravana's abode?
Thus speaking to them all, the rakshasa, holding spear, mace, and dart, rushed toward the Pandava.
As he charged swiftly, like a maddened elephant, Bhimasena struck his side with three blows of his sharp tusks.
Maniman, enraged, seized his great mace and hurled it at Bhimasena, the mighty one.
That great and terrible mace, like lightning in the sky, Bhimasena assailed with many arrows tipped with stone.
All those arrows struck the mace, but, swift as they were, they could not withstand the force of its momentum.
Understanding the conduct of mace combat, the valorous Bhimasena countered that blow with his own mighty strike.
Then, in that very moment, the intelligent rakshasa hurled a dreadful spear, with a golden shaft and iron tip.
Piercing Bhimasena's right arm with a terrible sound, that fierce, fire-wreathed spear fell suddenly to the ground.
Though severely wounded by the spear, the mighty archer, renowned for his prowess in mace combat, seized his mace.
He hurled it at Bhimasena with great speed, roaring loudly.
Breaking the spear with the tip of his mace, skilled in the art of mace combat, he rushed swiftly at him like Garuda at a serpent.
He leapt into the sky, shook his mace forcefully, and hurled it with a roar upon the battlefield.
Like Indra’s thunderbolt released by the lord of gods, it struck the demon, and, having reached the earth, fell down like a destructive force.
All creatures beheld that mighty demon, struck down by Bhimasena’s strength, as a lion would fell the lord of cattle.
Seeing him slain upon the ground, the surviving night-walkers, wailing in distress, fled toward the eastern direction.
