तथा सालांस्तमालांश्च पाटलाबकुलानपि। माला इव समासक्ताः शैलानां शिखरेषु च
Likewise, you saw sāl, tamāla, pāṭala, and bakula trees, clinging like garlands to the peaks of the mountains.
विमलस्फाटिकाभानि पाण्डुरच्छदनैर्द्विजैः। कलहंसैरुपेतानि सारसाभिरुतानि च
Resembling pure crystal, with their white plumage, the trees were frequented by kalahaṃsa and sārasā birds, whose calls resounded.
सरांसि बहुशः पार्था पश्यन्तः शैलसानुषु। पद्मोत्पलविमिश्राणि सुखशीतजलानि च
O Partha, they saw many lakes upon the mountain slopes, their waters cool and pleasant, mingled with lotuses and blue lilies.
एवं क्रमेण ते वीरा वीक्षमाणाः समन्ततः। गन्वन्त्यथ माल्यानि रसवन्ति फलानि च
Thus, proceeding in this way, those heroes gazed all around, and then gathered garlands and delicious fruits.
सरांसि च मनोज्ञानि वृक्षांश्चातिमनोरमान्। विविशुः पाण्डवाः सर्वेविस्मयोत्फुल्ललोचनाः
The Pandavas, their eyes wide with wonder, entered all those charming lakes and exceedingly delightful groves of trees.
कमलोत्पलकह्लारपुण्डरीकसुगन्धिना। सेव्यमाना वने तस्मन्सुखस्पर्शेन वायुना
In that forest, the wind, gentle to the touch, carried the sweet fragrance of lotuses, blue lilies, water-lilies, and white lotuses.
ततो युधिष्ठिरो भीममाहेदं प्रीतिमद्वचः। अहो श्रीमदिदं भीम गन्धमादनकाननम्
Then Yudhishthira spoke these joyful words to Bhima: 'Ah, Bhima, how splendid is this Gandhamadana forest!'
वने ह्मस्मिन्मनोरम्ये दिव्या काननजा द्रुमाः। लताश्च विविधाकाराः पत्रपुष्पफलोपगाः। भान्त्येते पुष्पविकचाः पुंस्कोकिलकुलाकुलाः
In this delightful forest, divine trees born of the woods, and creepers of various forms bearing leaves, flowers, and fruits, bloom forth, crowded with blossoming flowers and flocks of cuckoos.
नात्र कण्टकिनः केचिन्न च विद्यन्त्यपुष्पिताः। स्निग्धपत्रफला वृक्षा गन्धमादनसानुषु
Here, on the slopes of Gandhamadana, there are no thorny or flowerless trees; all the trees have glossy leaves and fruits.
भ्रमरारावमधुरा नलिनीः फुल्लपङ्कजाः। विलोड्यमाना पश्येमाः करिभिः सकरेणुभिः
See these blooming lotuses in the lakes, sweet with the hum of bees, being stirred by elephants dusted with pollen.
पश्येमां नलिनीं चान्यां कमलोत्पलमालिनीम्। स्रग्धरां विग्रहवतीं साक्षाच्छ्रियमिवापराम्
Behold this other lake adorned with lotuses and blue lilies, garlanded and possessing form, as if it were the goddess of fortune herself made manifest.
नानाकुसुमगन्धाढ्यास्तस्येमाः काननोत्तमे। उपगीयमाना भ्रमरै राजन्ते वनराजयः
In this excellent forest, these groves, rich with the scents of various flowers, shine as the bees sing their praises.
पश्य भीम शुभान्देशान्देवाक्रीडान्समन्ततः। अमानुषगतिं प्राप्ताः संसिद्धाः स्म वृकोदर
See, Bhima, these beautiful regions all around, playgrounds of the gods; truly, Vrikodara, we have attained a superhuman state.
लताभिः पुष्पिताग्राभिः पुष्पिताः पादपोत्तमाः। संश्लिष्टाः पार्थ शोभन्ते गन्धमादनसानुषु
On the slopes of Gandhamadana, O Partha, the finest trees, entwined with blossoming creepers, shine forth.
शिखण्डिनीभिश्चरतां सहितानां शिखण्डिनाम्। नदतां शृणु निर्घोषं भीम पर्वतसानुषु
Listen, Bhima, to the resounding calls of the peacocks moving together in groups upon the mountain slopes.
चकोराः शतपत्राश्च मत्तकोकिलशारिकाः। पत्रिणः पुष्पितानेतान्संपतन्ति महाद्रुमान्
Cakoras, hundred-petaled birds, intoxicated cuckoos, and starlings—these winged ones flock to the flowering great trees.
रक्तपीतारुणाः पार्थ पादपाग्रगताः खगाः। परस्परमुदीन्ते बहवो जीवजीवकाः
O Partha, many jivajivaka birds, red, yellow, and reddish, perched atop the trees, call out to one another.
हरितारुणवर्णानां शाड्वलानां समीपतः। सारसाः प्रतिदृश्यन्ते शैलप्रस्रवणेष्वपि
Near the green and reddish meadows, even at the mountain streams, cranes are seen everywhere.
वदन्ति मधुरा वाचः सर्वभूतमनोरमाः। भृङ्गराजोपचक्राश्च लोहपृष्ठाः पतत्रिणः
The king of bees and the iron-colored birds, delightful to all creatures, utter sweet sounds.
चतुर्विषाणाः पद्माभाः कुञ्जराः सकरेणवः। एते वैडूर्यवर्णाभं क्षोभयन्ति महत्सरः
These four-tusked, lotus-hued elephants, dusted with pollen, churn the great lake, their color like beryl.
बहुतालसमुत्सेघाः शैलशृङ्गपरिच्युताः। नानाप्रस्रवणेभ्यश्च वारिधाराः पतन्ति च
Streams of water, rising with great force and tumbling down from mountain peaks, fall from various springs.
भास्कराभप्रभा भीमाः शारदाभ्रघनोपमाः। शोभयन्ति महाशैलं नानारजतधातवः
Brilliant ores, shining like the sun and resembling dense autumn clouds, adorn the great mountain.
क्वचिदञ्जनवर्णाभाः क्वचित्काञ्चनसन्निभाः। धातवो हरितालस्य क्वचिद्धिङ्गुलकस्य च
In some places, the ores appear like black collyrium; elsewhere, they resemble gold; and there are also ores of orpiment and cinnabar.
मनःशिलागुहाश्चैव संध्याभ्रनिकरोपमाः। शशलोहितवर्णाभाः क्वचिद्गैरिकधातवः
There are caves of realgar, resembling clusters of evening clouds, and in some places, ores of ochre, shining with a rabbit-blood hue.
सितासिताभ्रप्रतिमा बालसूर्यसमप्रभाः। एते बहुविधाः शैलं शोभयन्ति महाप्रभाः
Some are like white and black clouds, some shine like the rising sun; these various radiant ores beautify the great mountain.
गन्धर्वाः सह कान्ताभिर्यथेष्टं भीमविक्रमाः। दृश्यन्ते शैलशृङ्गेषु पार्थ किंपुरुषैः सह
On the mountain peaks, O Partha, Gandharvas of mighty prowess are seen with their beloveds, together with Kimpurushas.
गीतानां समतालानां तथासाम्नां च निःखनः। श्रूयते बहुधा भीम सर्वभूतमनोहरः
The harmonious sounds of songs, instruments, and chants are heard in many ways, O Bhima, enchanting all beings.
महागङ्गामुदीक्षख पुण्यां देवनदीं शुभाम्। कलहंसगणैर्जुष्टामृषिकिन्नरसेविताम्
Behold the sacred and auspicious great Ganga, the divine river, frequented by flocks of swans and attended by sages and Kinnaras.
धातुभिश्च सरिद्भिश्च किन्नरैर्मृगपक्षिभिः। गन्धर्वैरप्सरोभिश्च काननैश्च मनोरमैः
See it adorned with ores and streams, with Kinnaras, wild animals, birds, Gandharvas, Apsaras, and delightful forests.
व्यालैश्च विविधाकारैः शतशीर्षैः समन्ततः। उपेतं पश्य कौन्तेय शैलराजमरिंदम
O Kaunteya, subduer of foes, behold the king of mountains, surrounded on all sides by serpents of various forms and a hundred heads.
