Bhimasena, too, stood firm, ready for single combat; and the Rakshasa, confident, desired a contest of arms.
As that fierce hand-to-hand battle raged between them, O King, the two sons of Madri, burning with anger, also rushed forward.
The son of Kunti, Vrikodara, laughed and restrained them both, saying, 'I am capable of facing this Rakshasa—watch and see.'
By my own strength, with my brothers, by righteousness, by good deeds, and by sacrifice, I vow, O King, that I will slay this Rakshasa.
Having spoken thus, those two heroes, vying with each other, the Rakshasa and Vrikodara, grappled together with their arms.
A fierce combat arose between the enraged Bhima and the Rakshasa, who could not tolerate each other in battle, like Indra and Shambara.
Those two mighty warriors, both greatly enraged, rushed at each other, tearing up trees and striking one another, roaring like thunderclouds at the end of the season.
The two foremost of the strong broke great trees with their thighs, each furious against the other, both intent on the other's destruction.
That battle of trees became a devastation of the forest, like the fight of the monkey-lions, the brothers Vali and Sugriva, in former times.
Seizing and hurling trees at each other for a while, both kept striking, roaring again and again.
When, in that place, all the trees had been felled and piled up in heaps by their mutual desire to kill, hundreds lay scattered.
Then, O Bharata, for a while, the two mighty warriors took up great rocks, and fought like mountain-lords with massive clouds.
With huge, fearsome rocks, both struck each other with the force of thunderbolts, in their wrath.
Rushing at each other again, both proud of their strength, they seized one another with their arms and wrestled like two elephants.
With terrible fists, they struck each other, and then a loud cracking sound arose from those two mighty souls.
Then Bhima, gathering his fist like a five-headed serpent, struck the Rakshasa's neck with force.
Seeing that Rakshasa, exhausted and struck by Bhimasena's arms, reeling greatly, Bhimasena pressed his attack.
Then Bhima, mighty-armed and peerless in strength, lifted him up with his arms and dashed him to the ground.
Then, seizing him powerfully with his arms, his mind overcome by wrath, the Pandava crushed all his limbs, and with his knee struck off his head from his body.
The Rakshasa's head, lips bitten, eyes wide, torn from the body by Bhimasena's strength like a fruit fallen from a tree, fell to the ground, drenched in blood, with teeth clenched.
Having slain him, the mighty archer approached Yudhishthira, praised by eminent brahmins like Vasava among the Maruts.
After the rakshasa was killed, the king, son of Kunti, returned again to the hermitage of Narayana and made his dwelling there.

The four seasons had passed as he wandered in the forest with Shiva's favor; then Arjuna, the fifth, arrived after completing his quest.
