उक्तस्त्वेवं तया राजा यमाविदमथाब्रवीत्। गच्छाम सहितास्तूर्णं येन यातो वृकोदरः
Thus addressed by her, the king then said to the twins: 'Let us quickly go together to where Vrikodara has gone.'
वहन्तु राक्षसा विप्रान्यथाश्रान्तान्यथाकृशान्। त्वमप्यमरसंकाश वह कृष्णां घटोत्कच
'Let the Rakshasas carry the Brahmanas, whether weary or weak; and you, Ghatoatkacha, who are like an immortal, carry Krishna as well.'
व्यक्तं दूरमितो भीमः प्रविष्ट इतिमे मतिः। चिरं चतस्य कालोऽयं स च वायुसमो जवे
It is clear to me that Bhima has gone far from here; much time has passed, and he is as swift as the wind.
तरस्वी वैनतेयस्य सदृशो भुवि लङ्घने। उत्पतेदपिचाकाशं निपतेच्चयथेच्छकम्
He is as energetic as Garuda in leaping upon the earth; he could rise into the sky and descend wherever he wished.
तमन्वियाम भवतां प्रभावाद्रजनीचराः। पुरा स नापराध्नोति सिद्धानां ब्रह्मवादिनाम्
Let us follow him, for by your power, O night-wanderers, he may not harm the Siddhas and Brahman-knowers.
तथेत्युक्त्वा तु ते सर्वेहैडिम्बप्रमुखास्तदा। उद्देशज्ञाः कुबेरस्य नलिन्या भरतर्षभ
Then, at those words, all of them, led by Hidimba, who knew the regions of Kubera, said, 'So be it,' O bull of the Bharatas.
आदाय पाण्डवांश्चैव तांश्च विप्राननेकशः। लोमशेनैव सहिताः प्रययुः प्रीतमानसाः
Taking the Pandavas and the many Brahmins, together with Lomasha, they set out, their minds filled with joy.
ते सर्वे त्वरिता गत्वा ददृशुस्तत्र कानने। पद्मसौगन्धिकवतींनलिनीं सुमनोरमाम्
All of them, moving quickly, reached that forest and saw the lovely lake filled with fragrant lotuses.
तं च भीमं महात्मानं तस्यास्तीरे व्यवस्थितम्। ददृशुर्निहतांश्चैव यक्षांश्च विपुलेक्षणान्
There they saw the great-souled Bhima standing on the shore of the lake, and also the slain Yakshas with wide eyes.
भिन्नकायाक्षिबाहूरुन्संचूर्णितशिरोधरान्। तं च भीमं महात्मानं तस्यास्तीरे व्यवस्थितम्
Their bodies, eyes, arms, and thighs broken, their heads and necks crushed; and Bhima, the great-souled, standing on the shore of that lake.
सक्रोधं स्तव्धनयनं संदष्टदशनच्छदम्। उद्यम्य च गदां दोर्भ्यां नदीतीरे व्यवस्थितम्
With anger, his eyes fixed, his teeth clenched, holding his mace with both hands, he stood on the riverbank.
प्रजासंक्षेपसमये दण्डहस्तमिवान्तकम्। तं दृष्ट्वा धर्मराजस्तु परिष्वज्याथ भारत
He looked like Death himself, staff in hand, at the time of the destruction of creatures; seeing him, King Yudhishthira embraced him, O Bharata.
उवाच श्लक्ष्णया वाचा कौन्तेय किमिदं कृतम्। साहसं वत भद्रं ते देवानामपि चाप्रियम्। पुनरेवं न कर्तव्यं मम चेदिच्छसि प्रियम्
He spoke to him gently: 'Son of Kunti, what have you done? This is a reckless act, even displeasing to the gods. Do not do such a thing again, if you wish to please me.'
अनुशिष्य तु कौन्तेयं पद्मानि परिगृह्य च। तस्यामेव नलिन्यां तु विजह्ररमरोपमाः
After instructing Bhima, and gathering the lotuses, they, equal to the gods, sported in that very lake.
एतस्मिन्नैव काले तु प्रगृहीतशिलायुधाः। प्रादुरासन्महाकायास्तस्योद्यानस्य रक्षिणः
At that very moment, the guardians of that garden, of great size and armed with stones, appeared.
ते दृष्ट्वाधर्मराजानं महर्षिं चापि लोमशम्। नकुलं सहदेवं च तथाऽन्यान्ब्राह्मणर्षभान्
Seeing King Yudhishthira, the sage Lomasha, Nakula, Sahadeva, and the other eminent Brahmins,
विनयेन नताः सर्वेप्रणिपत्य च भारत। सान्त्विता धर्मराजेन प्रसेदुः क्षणदाचराः
All of them bowed with humility and prostrated themselves, O Bharata; consoled by King Yudhishthira, the night-wanderers became pleased.
विदिताश्चकुबेरस्य तत्रते कुरुपुङ्गवाः। ऊषुर्नातिचिरं कालं रममाणाः कुरूद्वहाः। प्रतीक्षमाणआ बीभत्सुं गन्धमादनसानुषु
There, the Kurus were recognized by Kubera's attendants; the foremost of the Kurus did not stay long, delighting as they waited for Arjuna on the slopes of Gandhamadana.
तस्मिन्निवसमानोऽथ धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः। आमन्त्र्य सहितान्भ्रातृनित्युवाच सहद्विजान्
Then, while dwelling there, King Yudhishthira addressed his brothers and the Brahmins together.
दृष्टानि तीर्थान्यस्माभिः पुण्यानि च शिवानि च। मनसो ह्लादनीयानि वनानि च पृथक्पृथक्
We have seen the sacred and auspicious holy places, and the forests, each delightful to the mind.
देवैः पूर्वं विचीर्णानि मुनिभिश्च महात्मभिः। यथाक्रममशेषेण द्विजैः संपूजितानि च
These were previously examined by the gods and by great sages, and honored in full by the twice-born according to proper order.
ऋषीणां पूर्वचरितं तपोधर्मविचेष्टितम्। राजर्षीणां च चरितं कथाश्च विविधाः शुभाः
The ancient deeds of the sages, their acts of austerity and righteousness, and the stories of royal sages, as well as various auspicious tales.
शृण्वानास्तत्रतत्र स्म आश्रमेषु शिवेषु च। अभिषेकं द्विजैः सार्धं कृतवन्तो विशेषतः
Listening here and there in the sacred hermitages, they performed ablutions together with the twice-born, especially.
अर्चिताः सततं देवाः पुष्पैरद्भिः सदा च वः। यथालब्धैर्मूलफलैः पितरश्चापि तर्पिताः
The gods were always worshipped with flowers and water, and you too, with whatever roots and fruits were obtained, and the ancestors were also satisfied.
पर्वतेषु च रम्येषु सर्वेषु च सरस्सु च। उदधौ च महापुण्ये सूपस्पृष्टं महात्मभिः
On beautiful mountains, in all the lakes, and in the most sacred ocean, the great souls bathed thoroughly.
इला सरस्वती सिन्धुर्यमुना नर्मदा तथा। नानातीर्थेषु रम्येषु सूपस्पृष्टं सह द्विजैः
In Ilā, Sarasvatī, Sindhu, Yamunā, and Narmadā, and in various delightful holy places, they bathed together with the twice-born.
गङ्गाद्वारमतिक्रम्य बहवः पर्वताः शुभाः। हिमवान्पर्वतश्चैव नानाद्विजगणायुतः
Passing beyond the gateway of the Ganges, many auspicious mountains were seen, including Himavat, crowded with various groups of twice-born.
विशाला बदरी दृष्टा नरनारायणाश्रमः। दिव्यपुष्करिणी दृष्टा सिद्धदेवर्षिपूजिता
Viśālā and Badarī were seen, as well as the hermitage of Nara and Nārāyaṇa; the divine lake was seen, worshipped by accomplished sages and gods.
यथाक्रमविशेषेण सर्वाण्यायतनानि च। दर्शितानि द्विजेनद्रेण लोमशेन महात्मना
All the sanctuaries were shown in proper sequence by the great-souled sage Lomasha, the twice-born Indra.
इमं वैश्रवणावासं दुर्गमं गन्धमादनम्। कथं भीम गमिष्यामो मतिरत्र विधीयताम्
