Like Indra conquering hosts of Dānavas and Daityas, having overcome and defeated the bands of enemies in battle, the victor entered the lotus-lake and freely gathered lotuses.
Then, after drinking water like nectar, he became even more vigorous and radiant; uprooting, he gathered the fragrant and excellent lotuses called Saugandhika.
Then, driven by Bhīma's strength, those rākṣasas, filled with anger, went together to the Lord of Wealth and, greatly distressed, reported Bhīma's valor and power in battle as it happened.
Hearing their words, the god laughed and then spoke to the rākṣasas: 'Let Bhīma take as many lotuses as he wishes; I know this is for Kṛṣṇā's sake.'
Then, having taken leave of the Lord of Wealth, those heroes, foremost among the Kurus, departed; and there, in that lotus-lake, they saw Bhima, alone, enjoying himself as he pleased.
Then, O best of the Bharatas, he gathered many precious, divine, and variously shaped spotless lotuses.
Then a great and swift wind arose, low and dragging along gravel, possessing a wondrous touch, urging on the battle.
A great and terrible meteor, accompanied by thunder, fell, causing great fear; and the sun lost its brilliance, its rays veiled and covered by darkness.
A dreadful thunderclap resounded as Bhima stood firm in his valor; the earth trembled, and a shower of dust fell.
The quarters became blood-red, animals and birds cried out harshly; everything was shrouded in darkness, and nothing could be discerned.
[And many other terrible omens arose there.] Witnessing these marvels, Yudhishthira, son of Dharma and best of speakers, said: 'Who will overpower us?'
'Arm yourselves, Pandavas, fierce in battle! Good fortune to you! As I see these signs, our prowess must be clearly displayed.'
Having spoken thus, the king looked all around; but Yudhishthira, son of Dharma, did not see Bhima.
Then the subduer of enemies asked Krishna and the twins, who were nearby, about Bhima, the doer of terrible deeds, in the midst of the battle.
'Is Bhima with Draupadi? What is he intending to do? Or has that hero, fond of daring deeds, already accomplished some bold act?'
'These sudden omens, all around, foretelling great battle, have appeared, showing intense fear.'
To him, speaking thus, Krishna, wise and lovely-faced, the dear queen wishing to please her beloved, replied:
'That fragrant lotus, O king, which was brought by the Wind-god, has today been obtained by me through Bhimasena's affection.'
'And I also told the hero: If you see many more, bring them all quickly.'
'Surely, that mighty-armed Pandava has gone to the northeastern direction from here, O king, to gather them for my sake.'
Thus addressed by her, the king then said to the twins: 'Let us quickly go together to where Vrikodara has gone.'
'Let the Rakshasas carry the Brahmanas, whether weary or weak; and you, Ghatoatkacha, who are like an immortal, carry Krishna as well.'
It is clear to me that Bhima has gone far from here; much time has passed, and he is as swift as the wind.
He is as energetic as Garuda in leaping upon the earth; he could rise into the sky and descend wherever he wished.
Let us follow him, for by your power, O night-wanderers, he may not harm the Siddhas and Brahman-knowers.
Then, at those words, all of them, led by Hidimba, who knew the regions of Kubera, said, 'So be it,' O bull of the Bharatas.
Taking the Pandavas and the many Brahmins, together with Lomasha, they set out, their minds filled with joy.
All of them, moving quickly, reached that forest and saw the lovely lake filled with fragrant lotuses.
There they saw the great-souled Bhima standing on the shore of the lake, and also the slain Yakshas with wide eyes.
Their bodies, eyes, arms, and thighs broken, their heads and necks crushed; and Bhima, the great-souled, standing on the shore of that lake.
