This is Kubera’s beloved pleasure-garden, O best of men; no mortal bound by human law is permitted to sport here.
Here, O Vrikodara, the divine sages, Yakshas, and gods, after informing the chief of the Yakshas, drink and take as they wish.
And here, O Pandava, the Gandharvas and Apsarases also sport, with the consent of Kubera, the great-souled lord of the Yakshas.
If anyone here, acting improperly, disregards the Lord of Wealth and wishes to sport, such a wicked one will surely perish—there is no doubt.
Disregarding him, you wish to seize the lotuses here by force; how can you call yourself the brother of Dharmaraja?
First address the king of the Yakshas, then drink and take as you wish; otherwise, you will not be able to see even a single lotus here.
I do not see the Lord of Wealth here among these rākṣasas; and even if I saw the great king, I would not be able to ask him for anything.
For it is not right to beg from kings—this is the eternal law; nor do I wish to abandon the duty of a kṣatriya in any way.
And this beautiful lotus-lake has arisen from a mountain stream; this is not the mansion of the great-souled Kubera.
For this belongs equally to all beings and to Vaiśravaṇa; when such is the case with these riches, who should ask whom for anything?
Having spoken thus, Bhīmasena plunged into the midst of all the rākṣasas, like a mighty elephant breaking through.
Then the powerful one was forbidden by the rākṣasas on all sides, angrily shouting, 'Do not do this!'
But Bhīma, of terrible prowess, disregarded those rākṣasas and plunged in; all of them tried to restrain him.
Seize him, bind him, cut him up—let us cook and eat Bhīmasena!—so they cried in anger, rushing at him with weapons raised and eyes wide.
One, grasping a club, swiftly rushed at him and shouted, 'Stop! Stop!' Then, suddenly, they struck him with spears, swords, and other weapons.
Fierce and enraged, intent on killing, those dreadful rākṣasas surrounded Bhīma on all sides, seeking to slay him.
Born of Kuntī by the wind-god, mighty, valiant, swift, destroyer of foes, ever devoted to truth and righteousness, and unconquerable by enemies in battle.
That great-souled one struck down their various attacks and the weapons of those skilled in arms; just as a hero slays hundreds of foes near the lotus-lake, so did Bhīma.
Seeing his strength and power, his might in arms and knowledge, those warriors, unable to withstand him together, suddenly turned and fled in all directions.
Broken and confused, they quickly took to the sky, their senses bewildered; beaten by Bhīma, enraged and shattered, they fled toward the peaks of Kailāsa.
Like Indra conquering hosts of Dānavas and Daityas, having overcome and defeated the bands of enemies in battle, the victor entered the lotus-lake and freely gathered lotuses.
Then, after drinking water like nectar, he became even more vigorous and radiant; uprooting, he gathered the fragrant and excellent lotuses called Saugandhika.
Then, driven by Bhīma's strength, those rākṣasas, filled with anger, went together to the Lord of Wealth and, greatly distressed, reported Bhīma's valor and power in battle as it happened.
Hearing their words, the god laughed and then spoke to the rākṣasas: 'Let Bhīma take as many lotuses as he wishes; I know this is for Kṛṣṇā's sake.'
Then, having taken leave of the Lord of Wealth, those heroes, foremost among the Kurus, departed; and there, in that lotus-lake, they saw Bhima, alone, enjoying himself as he pleased.
Then, O best of the Bharatas, he gathered many precious, divine, and variously shaped spotless lotuses.
Then a great and swift wind arose, low and dragging along gravel, possessing a wondrous touch, urging on the battle.
A great and terrible meteor, accompanied by thunder, fell, causing great fear; and the sun lost its brilliance, its rays veiled and covered by darkness.
A dreadful thunderclap resounded as Bhima stood firm in his valor; the earth trembled, and a shower of dust fell.
The quarters became blood-red, animals and birds cried out harshly; everything was shrouded in darkness, and nothing could be discerned.
