O best of the Bharatas, I saw in Ravana's palace the goddess Vaidehi, dear to Raghava, and met with her.
Having burned Lanka completely, along with its walls and gates, I returned and openly announced my name there.
Rama, lotus-eyed, quickly understood my words, and, building a bridge across the great ocean—something never done by others before—crossed over, surrounded by millions of monkeys.
Then, by Rama's valor, all the rakshasas were slain in battle, including Ravana, the terror of the worlds, along with his hosts.
After killing the lord of the night-walkers, together with his brothers, sons, and kinsmen, Rama installed Vibhishana, the king of the rakshasas, on the throne of Lanka.
Rama, who cherishes the devoted and is devoted to the virtuous, then recovered Sita, who had been lost, just as one recovers the lost Vedic revelation.
With that virtuous wife, the illustrious Rama, son of Raghu, swiftly returned to his own city and then ruled Ayodhya, unconquered by his enemies.
Then Rama, the best of kings, was established in the kingdom. I asked Rama, lotus-eyed, for a boon.
As long as this story of Rama endures among people, O destroyer of foes, so long may I live—thus I asked, and so he granted.
And by Sita's grace, O subduer of enemies, divine enjoyments, as desired, always come to me here.
Rama ruled the kingdom for ten thousand years and ten hundred years, and then he went to his own abode.
Here, O sinless one, the Apsaras and Gandharvas always delight me, singing the deeds of that heroic one.
And this path, O joy of the Kurus, is inaccessible to mortals; therefore I have blocked this way, which is honored by the gods, for you.
O Bharata, as you travel this path, let no yaksha or rakshasa dare to attack or curse you.
This is a divine path of the gods; humans do not go here. It is for this reason you have come, and therefore this lake is here.
Without seeing your former form, I will not go any further; if I am worthy of your favor, show yourself to me as you truly are.
Thus addressed by Bhima, the monkey, with a smile, showed that very form which he had assumed when leaping over the ocean.
Desiring to please his brother, he assumed a vast body—the very form he once had when crossing the sea.
Then his body grew exceedingly, expanding in height and breadth, its radiant form covering the grove of banana trees along with their trunks.
The monkey, ascending the height of the mountain, stood there, his great body towering up like a second mountain.
With coppery eyes, sharp fangs, and brows drawn in a frown, the monkey stood, swinging his long tail and spreading himself across the directions.
Bhima, son of the Kurus, beheld that immense and extraordinary form of his brother and was astonished, yet again and again he rejoiced.
Seeing him shining with brilliance like the sun, like a golden mountain, and like the sky ablaze, Bhima closed his eyes.
Then Hanuman, as if smiling, spoke to Bhimasena: 'O faultless one, only this much of my form are you able to behold here.'
'I can grow even further, Bhima, as much as I desire in my mind; and in battle, my form and power increase exceedingly against enemies.'
Beholding that wondrous and terribly formidable form of Hanuman, resembling the Vindhya mountain, the son of the wind was filled with awe.
Then Bhima, his body hair bristling with delight, with joined palms and undaunted spirit, addressed Hanuman who stood before him.
'O mighty one, I have seen the vast measure of your body; now, O hero of great strength, restrain yourself by your own power.'
'For I am unable to look upon you, just as one cannot gaze at the risen sun; you are immeasurable and unassailable, like the mountain Mainaka.'
'O hero, today my mind is filled with great wonder, recalling how Rama, with you at his side, went forth himself to confront Ravana.'
