For the sake of Rama's wife, the monkey lord crossed the ocean, spanning a hundred yojanas, in a single leap.
That brother of mine is of great valor; I am equal to him in his brilliance. In strength, prowess, and battle, I am capable of subduing you.
I have arrived in this place for a certain reason. Rise, give me passage, and witness my strength today. If you do not yield to my command, I will send you to the abode of Yama.
Recognizing him as intoxicated with strength and arrogant in the power of his arms, Hanuman, with a smile in his heart, spoke these words.
Be gracious; I have no strength to rise, O faultless one, due to old age. Out of compassion for me, move my tail aside and proceed.
[Thus spoken by Hanuman, Bhima, proud of his own strength and power, regarded him in his mind as weak and lacking valor.
Grasping the tail with force, Bhima, considering him weak and lacking valor, thought, 'Today I will lead this monkey to the realm of Yama.'
Then, with his left hand and a smile of disdain, Bhima seized the tail, but was unable to move the great monkey's tail.
He lifted it again with both arms, like raising Indra's thunderbolt, but even with both arms, the mighty Bhima could not lift it.
With raised brows, wide eyes, and a face knit with frowns, Bhima became drenched with sweat, yet could not lift it.
Though he exerted himself to lift the tail, Bhima, standing at the monkey's side, remained with a face bowed in shame.
Having bowed down, the son of Kunti, with joined palms, spoke: 'Be gracious, O tiger among monkeys; forgive my harsh words.'
Whether you are a Siddha, a god, a Gandharva, or a Guhyaka, questioned by me, please tell me—who are you, taking the form of a monkey?
If it is not a secret, mighty-armed one, and if it is fit for me to hear, I ask you as a disciple would; I am worthy of your trust, O sinless one.
That which has stirred my curiosity about you, O subduer of foes, hear all of it in full, O joy of the Pandavas.
I am Hanuman by name, a monkey, born in the field of Kesari, by Vayu, the life-breath of the world, O lotus-eyed one.
Sugriva, son of the Sun, and Vali, son of Indra, both kings of all the monkeys, and all the monkey chiefs—
—these mighty ones served me, O subduer of enemies; and Sugriva had affection for me, as Fire has for Wind.
Then, wronged by his brother for some other reason, Sugriva dwelled for a long time with me on Mount Rishyamuka.
Then the heroic son of Dasharatha, named Rama, of great might—Vishnu in human form—walked upon the earth.
Seeking his father's pleasure, together with his wife and younger brother, that best of archers took refuge in the Dandaka forest.
His wife was deceitfully and violently abducted from Janasthana by the powerful and wicked king of the Rakshasas, Ravana.
By the demon Maricha, taking the form of a deer adorned with gold and gems, the tiger among men was deceived, O sinless one.
Having lost his wife, Raghava, searching for her with his brother, saw Sugriva, the foremost of monkeys, on a mountain peak.
With him, the great-souled Raghava formed a friendship; he slew Vali and restored Sugriva to the kingdom.
Having gained the kingdom, Sugriva sent out monkeys by the hundreds and thousands to search for Sita.
Then, O bull among men, accompanied by millions of monkeys, I, mighty-armed, set out to the southern quarter to search for Sita.
Then, the great-souled vulture Sampati told us the news of Sita, that she was in Ravana's abode.
Then, to accomplish Rama's purpose, whose deeds are flawless, I leapt at once across the ocean, a hundred yojanas wide.
By my own strength I crossed the ocean, abode of makaras, and saw Sita, daughter of King Janaka, equal to the daughters of the gods.
