With head slightly bent, covered in long bristling hair, and a tail raised upward like a banner, he shone resplendent.
He beheld a face with short lips, a coppery tongue, red ears, and a quivering beard, radiant like the moon with rays.
His mouth was adorned with white teeth within, mingled with a mass of golden mane, like a heap of Ashoka flowers.
Amidst golden plantains, his body blazed with great splendor, like fire with its own flames, gazing fearlessly with honey-colored eyes.
That wise, mighty, and massive best of monkeys stood blocking the path to heaven, like the Himalaya itself.
Seeing him alone in that great forest, the strong-armed Bhima, of terrible prowess, swiftly approached.
Bhima let out a mighty lion's roar, fierce as thunder and lightning; at that sound, the animals and birds were terrified.
Hanuman, of great strength, slightly opened his eyes and, seeing Bhima, looked at him with honey-colored eyes, full of disdain.
Then the illustrious son of the wind, Hanuman, who was nearby and possessed great energy, approached Bhima with a smile and spoke these words.
"Why have you, who are full of pain, awakened me from my peaceful sleep? Should you not, knowing the truth, show compassion to all beings?"
"We, who have taken animal birth, do not know dharma; but men, endowed with intelligence, show kindness to creatures."
"How could wise ones like you engage in cruel deeds that corrupt body, speech, and mind, and destroy righteousness?"
"You do not understand dharma, nor have you served the elders; in your childish folly and lack of wisdom, you destroy animals."
"Tell me, who are you, for what purpose have you come to this forest, which is shunned by both human feelings and even by men themselves?"
"Where do you intend to go today, O best of men? Speak! Beyond this, the mountain is inaccessible and extremely difficult to climb."
"O hero, without supernatural power, there is no passage here; this is the path to the world of the gods, always unattainable for humans."
"Out of compassion, O hero, I restrain you—listen to me; beyond this, you cannot go, so be at ease, O lord."
"Welcome in every way to you today, O best of men; here are roots and fruits, like nectar, for you."
"Eat and then turn back; do not seek death in vain. If my words are beneficial, O foremost of men, accept them."
Hearing these words of the wise king of monkeys, Bhimasena, the mighty and valiant one, then spoke.
"Who are you, and for what reason have you assumed the form of a monkey? A kshatriya asks you, who are of the order next to brahmanas."
"I am a Kaurava, of the lunar dynasty, conceived by Kunti; I am the Pandava, son of the wind, known as Bhimasena."
Hanuman, son of the wind, received Bhimasena's words with a smile and spoke to the son of Vayu.
"I am a monkey; I will not grant you passage as you wish. It is best for you to turn back; do not bring misfortune upon yourself."
Whether it is violence or something else, O monkey, I do not ask you. Grant me passage, rise up, do not let me suffer distress from you.
I have no strength to rise; I am afflicted by old age. If it is absolutely necessary for you to go, then step over me and proceed.
The supreme self, devoid of qualities, pervades your body and abides within it. That one is to be known and understood through wisdom; I do not disrespect him nor step over him.
If, through rituals or knowledge, I could cross you and this mountain, I would do so, just as Hanuman crossed the ocean.
Who is this named Hanuman, by whom the ocean was crossed? I ask you, O best of men; tell me, if you are able.
He is my brother, praised for his virtues, endowed with wisdom, resolve, and strength; renowned in the Ramayana, glorious, foremost among monkeys.
