With golden banana groves gently swaying in the breeze, the lake appeared as if being fanned, its banks lined with trees stretching to the water's edge.
Then, descending swiftly into that lake filled with many lotuses and water-lilies, Bhima, powerful as a great elephant, played there with vigor.
As he played there, shining with radiant splendor, Bhima churned the water like a charging elephant, sending it surging.
Then, with speed, he entered that forest thick with trees, and the Pandava blew his conch with all his breath, its sound resounding; Bhima, strong, also struck his arms, making the quarters echo.
The sound of his conch, Bhimasena's roar, and the fierce noise of his arm-striking made the mountain caves seem to bellow.
Hearing that mighty sound, like the crash of thunder, a great roar was released by lions sleeping in the mountain caves.
Even elephants, terrified by the lion's roar, let out a tremendous cry that filled the mountain.
Then, upon hearing that sound, the sleeping chief of the monkeys...
He blocked the celestial path for Bhima's sake, thinking, 'Let him not go by this way.'
He sat in the solitary path, adorned with clusters of plantains, barring the way to protect his brother Bhima.
The Pandava, standing amidst the plantain grove, thought thus: 'Let me not incur a curse or insult here.'
There, in the midst of the plantain grove, Hanuman, the great-bodied monkey, yawned, overcome by sleep.
Awakened by that great sound, the mighty monkey stretched his vast form high like Indra’s banner, and struck his moving tail, which resounded like Indra’s thunderbolt.
At the roar of his tail, the mountain, with its secret caves, echoed all around as if a cow were bellowing.
By the sound of the tail’s strike, the great mountain shook, its peaks trembling and breaking apart on all sides.
That tail’s roar, like the trumpeting of a maddened elephant, vanished among the wondrous mountain slopes.
Hearing that, Bhimasena’s hair stood on end with delight; seeking the source of the sound, he wandered through the plantain forest.
Then, in the midst of the plantain grove, upon a broad stone slab, the mighty-armed Bhima saw the lord of monkeys.
He saw one whose appearance was hard to gaze upon, tawny as a lightning flash, roaring like thunder, and restless as a lightning bolt.
His thick, round neck was set with arms crossed like a svastika, his body massive at the shoulders and slender at the waist.
With head slightly bent, covered in long bristling hair, and a tail raised upward like a banner, he shone resplendent.
He beheld a face with short lips, a coppery tongue, red ears, and a quivering beard, radiant like the moon with rays.
His mouth was adorned with white teeth within, mingled with a mass of golden mane, like a heap of Ashoka flowers.
Amidst golden plantains, his body blazed with great splendor, like fire with its own flames, gazing fearlessly with honey-colored eyes.
That wise, mighty, and massive best of monkeys stood blocking the path to heaven, like the Himalaya itself.
Seeing him alone in that great forest, the strong-armed Bhima, of terrible prowess, swiftly approached.
Bhima let out a mighty lion's roar, fierce as thunder and lightning; at that sound, the animals and birds were terrified.
Hanuman, of great strength, slightly opened his eyes and, seeing Bhima, looked at him with honey-colored eyes, full of disdain.
Then the illustrious son of the wind, Hanuman, who was nearby and possessed great energy, approached Bhima with a smile and spoke these words.
"Why have you, who are full of pain, awakened me from my peaceful sleep? Should you not, knowing the truth, show compassion to all beings?"
