Tearing through creepers and vines with force, the son of Pandu climbed ever higher up the mountain peaks like an elephant.
Clinging to water as a raincloud heavy with lightning, Bhimasena, of great strength, let out a mighty roar.
Awakened by Bhima's great roar, tigers abandoned their caves and the forest-dwellers hid themselves.
Frightened birds flew up, herds of animals fled, bears shook the trees and monkeys left their caves; great lions yawned and wild buffaloes stirred in the forest.
Terrified, elephants surrounded by their females left that forest and went to another great wood.
Herds of boars and deer, wild buffaloes, packs of tigers and jackals, all fled together with wild oxen.
Swans, cranes, ducks, parrots, pigeons, and curlews, startled, scattered in all directions.
Then, other proud elephants wounded by the tusks of females, and enraged lions and tigers, rushed at Bhimasena.
Their minds bewildered by fear, urinating and defecating, their mouths wide open, those fierce and terrible beasts let out dreadful roars.
Then, the son of the Wind, enraged and relying on the strength of his arms, struck down elephants with elephants, lions with lions, and with blows of his palm, the mighty Pandava subdued the rest.
Those lions, tigers, and leopards, being struck down by Bhima, out of fear released their urine and excrement as they fled from him.
Then, the mighty son of Pandu, glorious, swiftly entered the forest after casting them aside, filling the quarters with his voice.
Thereupon, the strong-armed hero saw on the slopes of Gandhamadana a most delightful grove of banana trees, vast and expansive for many yojanas.
With great speed, that mighty one approached it, intent on shaking it, like a great, rutting elephant breaking through various trees.
Bhima, best among the strong, uprooted banana trunks as tall as many palmyras and hurled them all around with force, crushing them with his immense energy, proud as a lion-man.
Then, in that place, many great herds of roaring elephants and buffaloes dwelling in the water fell down.
Then, the mighty son of Pandu, glorious, swiftly entered the forest after casting them aside, filling the quarters with his roar.
At that sound, and at Bhimasena's roar, even the wild animals and birds hidden within the forest were terrified.
Amidst that disturbance among the animals and birds, thousands of birds with wet wings rose up into the air.
Observing those flocks of water birds, the bull among the Bharatas followed them and saw a vast and beautiful lake.
With golden banana groves gently swaying in the breeze, the lake appeared as if being fanned, its banks lined with trees stretching to the water's edge.
Then, descending swiftly into that lake filled with many lotuses and water-lilies, Bhima, powerful as a great elephant, played there with vigor.
As he played there, shining with radiant splendor, Bhima churned the water like a charging elephant, sending it surging.
Then, with speed, he entered that forest thick with trees, and the Pandava blew his conch with all his breath, its sound resounding; Bhima, strong, also struck his arms, making the quarters echo.
The sound of his conch, Bhimasena's roar, and the fierce noise of his arm-striking made the mountain caves seem to bellow.
Hearing that mighty sound, like the crash of thunder, a great roar was released by lions sleeping in the mountain caves.
Even elephants, terrified by the lion's roar, let out a tremendous cry that filled the mountain.
Then, upon hearing that sound, the sleeping chief of the monkeys...
He blocked the celestial path for Bhima's sake, thinking, 'Let him not go by this way.'
He sat in the solitary path, adorned with clusters of plantains, barring the way to protect his brother Bhima.
