ददृशुस्तां च बदरीं वृत्तस्कन्धां मनोरमाम्। स्निग्धामविरलच्छायां श्रिया परमया युताम्
They saw that Badari tree, round-trunked and lovely, lush with unbroken shade, endowed with supreme splendor.
पत्रैः स्निग्धैरविरलैरुपेतां मृदुभिः शुभाम्। विशालशाखां विस्तीर्णामतिद्युतिसमन्विताम्
Adorned with smooth, glossy, abundant leaves, with wide-spreading branches, vast and radiant.
फलैरुपचितैर्दिव्यैराचितां स्वादुभिर्भृशम्। मधुस्रवैः सदा दिव्यां महर्षिगणसेविताम्। मदप्रमुदितैर्नित्यं नानाद्विजगणैर्युताम्
Heaped with divine, sweet fruits, always dripping with honey, frequented by hosts of great sages, and ever accompanied by joyful flocks of various birds.
अदंशमशके देशे बहुमूलफलोदके। नीलशाद्वलसंछन्ने देवगन्धर्वसेविते
In a land free from biting insects and mosquitoes, rich in roots, fruits, and water, covered with blue-green grass, and frequented by gods and Gandharvas.
सुभूमिभागविशदे स्वभावविदिते शुभे। जातां हिममृदुस्पर्शे देशेऽपहतकण्टके
In a region with clear, excellent ground, naturally known as auspicious, born where the touch of the snow is gentle, and thorns are absent.
तामुपेत्य महात्मानः सह तैर्ब्राह्मणर्षभैः। अवतेरुस्ततः सर्वे राक्षसस्कन्धतः शनैः
Reaching that place, the great souls, along with those foremost Brahmanas, all gently descended from the shoulders of the Rakshasas.
ततस्तमाश्रमं पुण्यं नरनारायणाश्रितम्। ददृशुः पाण्डवा राजन्सहिता द्विजपुङ्गवैः
Then, O King, the Pandavas, together with the eminent twice-born, beheld that sacred hermitage of Nara and Narayana.
तमसा रहितं पुण्यमनामृष्टं रवेः करैः। क्षुत्तृट्शीतोष्णदोषैश्च वर्जितं शोकनाशनम्
That holy place, untouched by darkness, unscorched by the sun's rays, free from hunger, thirst, heat, and cold, and a destroyer of sorrow.
महर्षिगणसंबाधं ब्राह्म्या लक्ष्म्या समन्वितम्। दुष्प्रवेशं महाराज नरैर्धर्मबहिष्कृतैः
O great king, that place was crowded with hosts of great sages, endowed with the splendor of Brahma and prosperity, and was inaccessible to men who had abandoned righteousness.
बलिहोमार्चितं दिव्यं सुसंमृष्टानुलेपनम्। दिव्यपुष्पोपहारैश्च सर्वतोऽभिविराजितम्
It was a divine place, honored with offerings and sacrifices to Bali, beautifully cleansed and anointed, and adorned on all sides with offerings of celestial flowers.
विशालैरग्निशरणैः स्रुग्भाण्डैराचितं शुभैः। महद्भिस्तोयकलशैः कठिनैश्चोपशोभितम्
It was filled with spacious fire-altars, auspicious ladles and vessels, and splendid, sturdy water-jars that enhanced its beauty.
शरण्यं सर्वभूतानां ब्रह्मघोपनिनादितम्। दिव्यमाश्रयणीयं तमाश्रमं श्रमनाशनम्। श्रिया युतमनिर्देश्यं देववर्योपशोभितम्
That ashram, a refuge for all beings, resounded with the chanting of Brahmins; it was a divine, restful sanctuary, a remover of fatigue, adorned with prosperity and graced by the foremost of gods.
फलमूलाशनैर्दान्तैश्चारुकृष्णाजिनाम्बरैः। सूर्यवैश्वानरसमैस्तपसा भावितात्मभिः
There dwelled self-restrained ascetics, eating only fruits and roots, clad in beautiful black antelope skins, their souls purified by austerity as intense as the sun and fire.
महर्षिभिर्मोक्षपरैर्यतिभिर्नियतेन्द्रियैः। ब्रह्मभूतैर्महाभागैरुपेतं ब्रह्मवादिभिः
It was inhabited by great sages devoted to liberation, ascetics with controlled senses, those who had become one with Brahman, and noble ones devoted to the discourse on Brahman.
सोऽभ्यगच्छन्महातेजास्तानृषीन्नियतः शुचिः। भ्रातृभिः सहितो धीमान्धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः
Then the mighty and pure Yudhishthira, the son of Dharma, wise and self-controlled, approached those sages together with his brothers.
दिव्यज्ञानोपपन्नास्ते दृष्ट्वा प्राप्तं युधिष्ठिरम्। अभ्यगच्छन्त सुप्रीता दिव्या देवमहर्षयः
Those divine, celestial sages, endowed with heavenly knowledge, saw Yudhishthira arrive and, filled with joy, came forward to greet him.
प्रीतास्ते तस्य सत्कारं विधिना पावकापमाः। उपाजह्रुश्च सलिलं पुष्पमूलफलं शुचि
Pleased, those pure and radiant sages honored him according to custom, and offered him water, flowers, roots, and fruits.
स तैः प्रीत्याऽथ सत्कारमुपनीतं महर्षिभिः। प्रयतः प्रतिगृह्याथ धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः
Then, Yudhishthira the king of righteousness, with devotion, accepted the hospitality offered by those great sages with affection.
तं शक्रसदनप्रख्यं दिव्यगन्धं मनोरमम्। प्रीतः स्वर्गोपमं पुण्यं पाण्डवः सह कृष्णया
Pleased, the Pandava, together with Draupadi, entered that delightful, heavenly, and meritorious place, fragrant and beautiful, resembling the abode of Indra.
रविवेश शोभया युक्तं भ्रातृभिश्च सहानघ। ब्राह्मणैर्वेदवेदाङ्गपारगैश्च सहार्चितः
Spotless, adorned with splendor, he entered with his brothers, honored by Brahmins learned in the Vedas and Vedangas.
तत्रापश्यत्स धर्मात्मा देवदेवर्पिपूजितम्। नरनारायणस्थानं भागीरथ्योपशोभितम्
There, that righteous soul beheld the place of Nara and Narayana, worshipped by the lord of gods, shining beside the Bhagirathi.
तस्मिन्मधृस्रवफलां ब्रह्मर्षिगणभाविनीम्। वदरीं तामुपाश्रित्य पाण्डवो भ्रातृभिः सह
There, by the Badari tree, which bore fruits in every season and was cherished by the assembly of Brahmarshis, the Pandava stayed with his brothers.
मुदा युक्ता महात्मानो रेमिरे तत्र ते तदा। आलोकयन्तो मैनाकं नानाद्विजगणायुतम्। हिरण्यशिखरं चैव मध्ये विन्दुसरः शिवम्
Filled with joy, those great souls delighted there, gazing upon Mainaka, teeming with flocks of various birds, and the golden-peaked, auspicious Vindusara lake at its center.
भागीरथीं सुतीर्थां च शीतामलजलां शिवाम्। मणिप्रवालप्रस्तारां पादपैरुषशोभिताम्
They beheld the holy Bhagirathi, with its pure, cool waters and sacred fords, its banks adorned with gems, coral, and radiant trees.
दिव्यपुष्पसमाकीर्णां मनःप्रीतिविवर्धनीम्। वीक्षमाणा महात्मानो विजह्रुस्तत्र पाण्डवाः
That river, strewn with celestial flowers and gladdening the heart, was enjoyed by the great-souled Pandavas as they gazed upon it.
तस्मिन्देवर्षिचरिते देशे परमदुर्गमे। भागीरथीपुण्यजलेतर्पयांचक्रिरे पितॄन्। देवानृषींश्च कौन्तेयाः परमं शौचमास्थिताः
In that land, famed for the deeds of divine sages and supremely difficult to access, the sons of Kunti, observing utmost purity, offered oblations with the holy waters of the Bhagirathi to their ancestors, gods, and sages.
तत्र ते तर्पयन्तश्च जपन्तश्च कुरूद्वहाः। ब्राह्मणैः सहिता वीरा ह्यवसन्पुरुपर्षभाः
There, the foremost of the Kurus, together with the Brahmanas, performed offerings and recitations, and those heroic bulls among men dwelled there.
कृष्णायास्तत्रपशय्न्तः क्रीडितान्यमरप्रभाः। विचित्राणि नरव्याघ्रा रेमिरे तत्र पाण्डवाः
There, the Pandavas, tigers among men, delighted themselves with various games to please Krishna, shining with the brilliance of the immortals.
तत्र ते पुरुषव्याघ्राः परमं शौचमास्थिताः। षड्रात्रमवसन्वीरा धनंजयदिदृक्षया
There, those tiger-like men, established in utmost purity, stayed for six nights, longing to see Dhananjaya.
तस्मिन्विहरमाणाश्च रममाणाश्च पाण्डवाः। मनोज्ञे काननवरे सर्व भूतमनोरमे
There, the Pandavas, enjoying themselves and taking pleasure in that delightful and charming forest, which enchanted all beings.
