There, O lord of men, the waters, foaming and impure, poured everywhere like those of the ocean.
Carrying abundant water, covered with foam and floating debris, they rushed with great noise, uprooting trees as they went.
When the noise ceased and the wind calmed, and as the waters receded and the sun appeared, the lowlands became visible.
Then, O Bharata, they all slowly emerged, gathered together, and the heroes set out again for Gandhamadana mountain.
Then, as the great-hearted Pandavas departed, Draupadi, unable to proceed on foot, sat down.
Exhausted, afflicted by suffering, and battered by wind and rain, the ascetic Panchali fainted from her delicate nature.
Trembling with unconsciousness, her dark eyes wavering, she supported herself with both arms upon her thighs, which were shaped like the curve of a bow.
Clinging to her thighs, which together resembled elephant trunks, she suddenly collapsed to the ground, trembling like a plantain tree.
As she fell, that noble woman, breaking like a vine, was swiftly caught by the valiant Nakula.
O King, this dark-eyed daughter of the Panchala king has collapsed to the ground from exhaustion; behold her, O Bharata.
She, who deserves no suffering, has come to extreme distress, gentle in her gait; comfort her, O great king, for she is worn out by fatigue.
At his words, the king, overwhelmed by grief, and Bhima and Sahadeva, rushed forward at once.
Seeing her, the son of Kunti, with a pale face and emaciated form, took her onto his lap, and the righteous one lamented in anguish.
How does she, accustomed to soft beds in guarded chambers, now lie stretched upon the ground, she who is worthy of happiness and of radiant complexion?
How have her tender feet and lotus-bright face, which deserve the finest, become darkened today because of me?
What is this, done by me out of foolishness and desire for gambling, taking Krishna through the forest teeming with wild beasts?
You will find happiness, O auspicious one, upon gaining the Pandavas as husbands—so said your father, the steadfast king, when he gave you away.
Yet, despite all that, she lies fallen upon the ground, worn by toil and sorrow, because of my sinful deeds.
As King Yudhishthira thus lamented, Dhaumya and all the eminent Brahmins arrived there.
They comforted her and honored her with blessings, recited mantras to ward off demons, and performed rites.
As the sages recited mantras for peace, and the Pandavas repeatedly touched her with cool hands,
Attended by cool air mixed with water, Panchali gradually regained comfort and her consciousness.
Having comforted that distressed Krishna on a spread of deer skin, the sons of Pritha let the ascetic woman, who had regained her senses, rest.
The twin sons, whose palms were red and feet bore marks of honor, gently massaged her feet with their hands, roughened by calluses.
King Yudhishthira, lord of righteousness, also consoled her, and then the best of Kurus spoke these words to Bhimasena:
There are many mountains here, O mighty-armed one, rugged and covered with snow; how will Krishna be able to travel among them?
O king, I myself will carry you, the princess, and the twins, O bull among men; do not let your mind fall into despair.
Or, the one born of me, a bird-like being equal to my strength, can carry us all, O faultless one, if you so command—Ghatotkaca.
He knows righteousness, is strong and brave, a foremost rakshasa; devoted to us, my own son, he is fit to carry his mother.
With your son, O Bhima, endowed with your valor, I, unharmed and with Draupadi, could reach Gandhamadana.
