न चापश्यंस्ततोऽन्योन्यं तमसाऽऽवृतचक्षुषः। आकृष्यमाणा वातेन साश्मचूर्णेन भारत
Their eyes shrouded in darkness, they could not see one another, O Bharata, as they were buffeted by the wind and stone-dust.
द्रुमाणां वातरुग्णआनां पततां भूतलेऽनिशम्। अन्येषां च महीजानां शब्दः समभवन्महान्
A great noise arose from trees broken by the wind, falling constantly to the ground, and from other large objects on the earth.
द्यौः स्वित्पतति किं भूमिर्दीर्यते पर्वतोनु किम्। इति ते मेनिरे सर्वेपवनेन विमोहिताः
Bewildered by the wind, they all thought, 'Is the sky falling? Is the earth splitting? Or is it the mountain itself?'
ते पथाऽनन्तरांन्वृक्षान्वल्मीकान्विषमाणि च। पाणिभिः परिमार्गन्तो भीता वायोर्निलिल्यिरे

धर्मराजश्च धौम्यश् निलिल्याते महावने। अग्निहोत्राण्युपादाय सहदेवस्तु पर्वते
Dharmaraja and Dhaumya hid themselves in the great forest, taking the sacrificial fires, while Sahadeva took refuge on the mountain.
नकुलो ब्राह्मणाश्चान्ये लोमशश्च महातपाः। वृक्षानासाद्य संत्रस्तास्तत्रतत्र निलिल्यिरे
Nakula, the other Brahmanas, and the great ascetic Lomasha, all terrified, found trees here and there and hid themselves.
मन्दीभूते तु पवने तस्मिन्रजसि शाम्यति। महद्भिर्जलधारौर्घर्वर्षमभ्याजगाम ह
When the wind subsided and the dust settled, a great downpour of rain, accompanied by thunderclouds, began.
भृशं चटचटाशब्दो वज्राणां क्षिप्यतामिव। ततस्ताश्चञ्चलाभासश्चेरुरभ्रेषु विद्युतः
A loud crackling sound arose, as if thunderbolts were being hurled, and then lightning, flickering in the clouds, moved about.
ततोऽश्मसहिता धाराः संवृण्वन्त्यः समन्ततः। प्रपेतुरनिशं तत्र शीघ्रवातसमीरिताः
Then torrents of rain, mixed with stones, driven by swift winds, fell incessantly there, covering everything all around.
तत्र सागरगा ह्यापः कीर्यमाणाः समन्ततः। प्रादुरासन्सकलुषाः फेनवत्यो विशांपते
There, O lord of men, the waters, foaming and impure, poured everywhere like those of the ocean.
वहन्त्यो वारि बहुलं फेनोडुपपरिप्लुतम्। परिसमस्रुर्महाशब्दाः प्रकर्षन्त्यो महीरुहान्
Carrying abundant water, covered with foam and floating debris, they rushed with great noise, uprooting trees as they went.
तस्मिन्नुपरते शब्देबाते च समतां गते। गते ह्यम्भसि निम्नानि प्रादुर्भूते दिवाकरे
When the noise ceased and the wind calmed, and as the waters receded and the sun appeared, the lowlands became visible.
निर्जग्मुस्ते शनैः सर्वे समाजग्मुश्च भारत। प्रतस्थिरे पुनर्वीराः पर्वतं गन्धमादनम्
Then, O Bharata, they all slowly emerged, gathered together, and the heroes set out again for Gandhamadana mountain.
ततः प्रयातमात्रेषु पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु। पद्भ्यामनुचिता गन्तुं द्रौपदी समुपाविशत्
Then, as the great-hearted Pandavas departed, Draupadi, unable to proceed on foot, sat down.
श्रान्ता दुःखपरीता च वातवर्षेण तेन च। सौकुमार्याच्च पाञ्चाली संमुमोह तपस्विनी
Exhausted, afflicted by suffering, and battered by wind and rain, the ascetic Panchali fainted from her delicate nature.
सा कम्पमाना मोहेन बाहुभ्यामसितेक्षणा। रवृत्ताभ्यामनुरूपाभ्यामूरू समवलम्बत

आलम्बमाना सहितावूरू गजकरोपमौ। रपपात सहसा भूमौ वेपन्ती कदली यथा
Clinging to her thighs, which together resembled elephant trunks, she suddenly collapsed to the ground, trembling like a plantain tree.
तां पतन्तीं वरारोहां भज्यमानां लतामिव। नकुलः समभिद्रुत्य परिजग्राह वीर्यवान्
As she fell, that noble woman, breaking like a vine, was swiftly caught by the valiant Nakula.
राजन्पाञ्चालराजस्य सुतेयमसितक्षणा। श्रान्ता निपतिता भूमौ तामवेक्षस्व भारत
O King, this dark-eyed daughter of the Panchala king has collapsed to the ground from exhaustion; behold her, O Bharata.
अदुःखार्हा परं दुःखं प्राप्तेयं मृदुगामिनी। आश्वासय महाराज तामिमां श्रमकर्शिताम्
She, who deserves no suffering, has come to extreme distress, gentle in her gait; comfort her, O great king, for she is worn out by fatigue.
राजा तु वचनात्तस्य भृशं दुःखसमन्वितः। भीमश्च सहदेवश्च सहसा समुपाद्रवन्
At his words, the king, overwhelmed by grief, and Bhima and Sahadeva, rushed forward at once.
तामवेक्ष्यतु कौन्तेयो विवर्णवदनां कृशाम्। अङ्कमानीय धर्मात्मा पर्यदेवयदातुरः
Seeing her, the son of Kunti, with a pale face and emaciated form, took her onto his lap, and the righteous one lamented in anguish.
कथं वेश्मसु गुप्तेषु स्वास्तीर्णशयनोचिता। भूमौ निषतिता शेते सुखार्हा वरवर्णिनी
How does she, accustomed to soft beds in guarded chambers, now lie stretched upon the ground, she who is worthy of happiness and of radiant complexion?
सुकुमारौ कथं पादौ मुखं च कमलप्रभम्। मत्कृतेऽद्य वरार्हायाः श्यामतां समुपागतम्
How have her tender feet and lotus-bright face, which deserve the finest, become darkened today because of me?
किमिदं द्यूतकामेन मया कृतमबुद्धिना। आदाय कृष्णां चरता वने मृगगणाकुले
What is this, done by me out of foolishness and desire for gambling, taking Krishna through the forest teeming with wild beasts?
सुखं प्राप्स्यसि कल्याणि पाण्डवान्प्राप्य वै पतीन्। इतिद्रुवदराजेन पित्रा दत्ताऽयतेक्षणा
You will find happiness, O auspicious one, upon gaining the Pandavas as husbands—so said your father, the steadfast king, when he gave you away.
तत्सर्वमानवाप्येयं श्रमशोकाद्विकर्शिता। शेते निपतिता भूमौ पापस्य मम कर्मभिः
Yet, despite all that, she lies fallen upon the ground, worn by toil and sorrow, because of my sinful deeds.
तथा लालप्यमाने तु धर्मराजे युधिष्ठिरे। धौम्यप्रभृतयः सर्वे तत्राजग्मुर्द्विजोत्तमाः
As King Yudhishthira thus lamented, Dhaumya and all the eminent Brahmins arrived there.
ते समाश्वासयामासुराशीर्भिश्चाप्यपूजयन्। राक्षोघ्नांश्च तथा मन्त्राञ्जेपुश्चक्रुश्च ते क्रियाः
They comforted her and honored her with blessings, recited mantras to ward off demons, and performed rites.
