Hearing that story from Lomasha, all the Pandavas, O Janamejaya, quickly set out, filled with delight.
Those heroes, equipped with ready bows, quivers full of arrows, and swords, their finger-guards fastened, possessed of immeasurable energy—
Having gathered the foremost brahmins, the eldest among all bowmen, together with Draupadi, O king, they set out for Gandhamadana.
They saw lakes, rivers, mountains, forests, and trees with abundant shade on the mountain summit.
In lands ever rich with flowers and fruits, frequented by hosts of divine sages, the heroes, sustaining themselves on roots and fruits, fixed their minds within themselves.
They wandered through regions of varied and difficult terrain, observing many and diverse kinds of wild animals.
That mountain, beloved of Gandharvas and Apsarases, was entered by the great-souled ones, thronged with seers, Siddhas, and celestial beings, and frequented by Kinnaras.
As the heroes entered the Gandhamadana mountain, O lord of men, a mighty storm arose, fierce and tumultuous.
Then a great cloud of dust arose, thick with leaves, which suddenly covered the earth, the sky, and even the heavens.
With the sky veiled by dust, nothing at all could be seen, nor could they speak to each other.
Their eyes shrouded in darkness, they could not see one another, O Bharata, as they were buffeted by the wind and stone-dust.
A great noise arose from trees broken by the wind, falling constantly to the ground, and from other large objects on the earth.
Bewildered by the wind, they all thought, 'Is the sky falling? Is the earth splitting? Or is it the mountain itself?'
Frightened by the wind, they groped with their hands along the path, among trees, anthills, and uneven ground, and hid themselves.
Then mighty Bhimasena, taking up his bow and gathering Krishna, stood sheltered by a tree.
Dharmaraja and Dhaumya hid themselves in the great forest, taking the sacrificial fires, while Sahadeva took refuge on the mountain.
Nakula, the other Brahmanas, and the great ascetic Lomasha, all terrified, found trees here and there and hid themselves.
When the wind subsided and the dust settled, a great downpour of rain, accompanied by thunderclouds, began.
A loud crackling sound arose, as if thunderbolts were being hurled, and then lightning, flickering in the clouds, moved about.
Then torrents of rain, mixed with stones, driven by swift winds, fell incessantly there, covering everything all around.
There, O lord of men, the waters, foaming and impure, poured everywhere like those of the ocean.
Carrying abundant water, covered with foam and floating debris, they rushed with great noise, uprooting trees as they went.
When the noise ceased and the wind calmed, and as the waters receded and the sun appeared, the lowlands became visible.
Then, O Bharata, they all slowly emerged, gathered together, and the heroes set out again for Gandhamadana mountain.
Then, as the great-hearted Pandavas departed, Draupadi, unable to proceed on foot, sat down.
Exhausted, afflicted by suffering, and battered by wind and rain, the ascetic Panchali fainted from her delicate nature.
Trembling with unconsciousness, her dark eyes wavering, she supported herself with both arms upon her thighs, which were shaped like the curve of a bow.
Clinging to her thighs, which together resembled elephant trunks, she suddenly collapsed to the ground, trembling like a plantain tree.
As she fell, that noble woman, breaking like a vine, was swiftly caught by the valiant Nakula.
O King, this dark-eyed daughter of the Panchala king has collapsed to the ground from exhaustion; behold her, O Bharata.
