सैषा वसुमती कृत्स्ना योजनानां शतं गता। किमेतत्किंप्रभावेण येनेदं रव्याकुलं जगत्। आख्यातु नो भवाञ्शीघ्रं विसंज्ञाः स्मेह सर्वशः
This entire earth has sunk a hundred yojanas; what is this, what is its cause, by which the world is so troubled? Please tell us quickly, for we are all bewildered here.
असुरेभ्यो भयं नास्ति युष्माकं कुत्रचित्क्वचित्। श्रूयतां यत्कृते त्वेष संक्षोभो जायतेऽमराः
There is no danger to you from the asuras anywhere at all; listen, O immortals, to the reason for this disturbance that has arisen.
योसौ सर्वत्रगः श्रीमानक्षरात्मा व्यवस्थितः। तस्य प्रभावात्संक्षोभस्त्रिदिवस्य प्रकाशते
That illustrious, all-pervading, imperishable Self is present everywhere; by His power, this agitation in the three worlds is manifest.
यैषा वसुमती कृत्स्ना योजनानां शतं गता। समुद्धृता पुनस्तेन विष्णुना परमात्मना
This entire earth, which had sunk a hundred yojanas, has again been lifted up by that Supreme Soul, Vishnu.
तस्यामुद्धार्यमाणायां संक्षोभः समजायत। एवं भवन्तो जानन्तु च्छिद्यतां संशयश्च वः
As the earth was being lifted up by Him, a disturbance arose; thus, let all of you know this, and let your doubt be dispelled.
क्व तद्भूतं वसुमतीं समुद्धरति हृष्टवत्। तं देशं भगवन्ब्रूहि तत्र यास्यामहे वयम्
Where is that place where the earth is being joyfully lifted? O blessed one, tell us that region, so that we may go there.
हन्त गच्छत भद्रं वो नन्दने पशय्त स्थितम्। एषोत्र भगवाञ्श्रीमान्मुपर्णः संप्रकाशते
Come, go in peace, and see in Nandana the glorious Lord manifest; here, the illustrious Upabarṇa is revealed.
वारादेणैव रूपेण भगवाँल्लोकभावनः। कालानल इवाभाति पृथिवीतलमुद्धरन्
The blessed Lord, the creator of the worlds, appears in the form of a boar, shining like the fire of destruction, as He raises up the earth.
एतस्योरसि सुव्यक्तं श्रीवत्समभिराजते। पश्यध्वं विबुधाः सर्वे भूतमेतदनामयम्
On His chest, the Srivatsa mark shines clearly; behold, all you gods, this being, free from affliction.
ततो दृष्ट्वा महात्मानं श्रुत्वा चामन्त्र्य चामराः। पितामहं पुरस्कृत्य जग्मुर्देवा यथागतम्
Then, having seen that great-souled one and heard His words, the gods, after saluting Brahma, departed as they had come.
श्रुत्वा तु तां कथां सर्वे पाण्डवा जनमेजय। लोमशादेशितेनाशु यथा जग्मुः प्रहृष्टवत्
Hearing that story from Lomasha, all the Pandavas, O Janamejaya, quickly set out, filled with delight.
ते शूरा सज्जधन्वानस्तूणवन्तः समार्गणाः। बद्धगोधाङ्गुलित्राणाः खङ्गवन्तोऽमितौजसः
Those heroes, equipped with ready bows, quivers full of arrows, and swords, their finger-guards fastened, possessed of immeasurable energy—
परिगृह्य द्विजश्रेष्ठाञ्ज्येष्ठाः सर्वधनुष्मताम्। पञ्चालीसहिता राजन्प्रययुर्गन्धमादनम्
Having gathered the foremost brahmins, the eldest among all bowmen, together with Draupadi, O king, they set out for Gandhamadana.
सरांसि सरितश्चैव पर्वतांश्च वनानि च। वृक्षांश्च बहुलच्छायान्ददृशुर्गिरिमूर्धनि
They saw lakes, rivers, mountains, forests, and trees with abundant shade on the mountain summit.
नित्यपुष्पफलान्देशान्देवर्षिगणसेवितान्। आत्मन्यात्मानमाधाय वीरा मूलफलाशिनः
In lands ever rich with flowers and fruits, frequented by hosts of divine sages, the heroes, sustaining themselves on roots and fruits, fixed their minds within themselves.
चेरुरुच्चावचाकारान्देशान्विषमसंकटान्। पश्यन्तो मृगजातानि बहूनि विविधानि च
They wandered through regions of varied and difficult terrain, observing many and diverse kinds of wild animals.
ऋषिसिद्धामरयुतं गन्धर्वाप्सरसां प्रियम्। विविशुस्ते महात्मानः किन्नराचरितं गिरिम्
That mountain, beloved of Gandharvas and Apsarases, was entered by the great-souled ones, thronged with seers, Siddhas, and celestial beings, and frequented by Kinnaras.
प्रविशत्स्वथ वीरेषु पर्वतं गन्धमादनम्। चणअडवातं महद्वर्षं प्रादुरासीद्विशांपते
As the heroes entered the Gandhamadana mountain, O lord of men, a mighty storm arose, fierce and tumultuous.
ततो रेणुः समुद्भूतः सपत्रबहुलो महान्। पृथिवीं चान्तरिक्षं च द्यां चैव सहसाऽवृणोत्
Then a great cloud of dust arose, thick with leaves, which suddenly covered the earth, the sky, and even the heavens.
न स्म प्रज्ञायते किंचिदावृते व्योम्नि रेणुना। न चापि शेकुस्तत्कर्तुमन्योन्यस्याभिभाषणम्
With the sky veiled by dust, nothing at all could be seen, nor could they speak to each other.
न चापश्यंस्ततोऽन्योन्यं तमसाऽऽवृतचक्षुषः। आकृष्यमाणा वातेन साश्मचूर्णेन भारत
Their eyes shrouded in darkness, they could not see one another, O Bharata, as they were buffeted by the wind and stone-dust.
द्रुमाणां वातरुग्णआनां पततां भूतलेऽनिशम्। अन्येषां च महीजानां शब्दः समभवन्महान्
A great noise arose from trees broken by the wind, falling constantly to the ground, and from other large objects on the earth.
द्यौः स्वित्पतति किं भूमिर्दीर्यते पर्वतोनु किम्। इति ते मेनिरे सर्वेपवनेन विमोहिताः
Bewildered by the wind, they all thought, 'Is the sky falling? Is the earth splitting? Or is it the mountain itself?'
ते पथाऽनन्तरांन्वृक्षान्वल्मीकान्विषमाणि च। पाणिभिः परिमार्गन्तो भीता वायोर्निलिल्यिरे
Frightened by the wind, they groped with their hands along the path, among trees, anthills, and uneven ground, and hid themselves.
ततः कार्मुकमादाय भीमसेनो महाबलः। कृष्णामादाय संगम्य तस्थावाश्रित्य पादपम्
Then mighty Bhimasena, taking up his bow and gathering Krishna, stood sheltered by a tree.
धर्मराजश्च धौम्यश् निलिल्याते महावने। अग्निहोत्राण्युपादाय सहदेवस्तु पर्वते
Dharmaraja and Dhaumya hid themselves in the great forest, taking the sacrificial fires, while Sahadeva took refuge on the mountain.
नकुलो ब्राह्मणाश्चान्ये लोमशश्च महातपाः। वृक्षानासाद्य संत्रस्तास्तत्रतत्र निलिल्यिरे
Nakula, the other Brahmanas, and the great ascetic Lomasha, all terrified, found trees here and there and hid themselves.
मन्दीभूते तु पवने तस्मिन्रजसि शाम्यति। महद्भिर्जलधारौर्घर्वर्षमभ्याजगाम ह
When the wind subsided and the dust settled, a great downpour of rain, accompanied by thunderclouds, began.
भृशं चटचटाशब्दो वज्राणां क्षिप्यतामिव। ततस्ताश्चञ्चलाभासश्चेरुरभ्रेषु विद्युतः
A loud crackling sound arose, as if thunderbolts were being hurled, and then lightning, flickering in the clouds, moved about.
ततोऽश्मसहिता धाराः संवृण्वन्त्यः समन्ततः। प्रपेतुरनिशं तत्र शीघ्रवातसमीरिताः
Then torrents of rain, mixed with stones, driven by swift winds, fell incessantly there, covering everything all around.
