दुर्बलाः क्लेशिताः स्मेति यद्ब्रुवामेतरेतरम्। अशक्येऽपि व्रजामो यद्नंजयदिदृक्षया
When we say to each other, 'We are weak and afflicted,' yet we still go on, even when it seems impossible, longing to see Arjuna.
तन्मे दहति गात्राणि तूलराशिमिवानलः। यच्च वीरं न पश्यामि धनंजयमुपान्तिके
This longing burns my limbs like fire consumes a heap of cotton—because I do not see the heroic Dhananjaya nearby.
तस्यादर्शनतप्तं मां सानुजं वनमास्थितम्। याज्ञसेन्याः परामर्शः स च वीर दहत्युत
Afflicted by his absence, I dwell in the forest with my brothers; the thought of Yajnaseni’s sorrow, too, burns me, O hero.
नकुलात्पूर्वजं पार्थं न पश्याम्यमितौजसम्। अजेयमुग्रधन्वानं तेन तप्ये वृकोदर
I do not see Partha, elder to Nakula, of boundless energy, unconquerable and mighty-armed; because of this, O Vrikodara, I am tormented.
तीर्थानि चैव रम्याणि वनानि च सरांसि च। चरामि सह युष्माभिस्तस्य दर्शनकाङ्क्षया
The holy places, the lovely forests, and the lakes—I wander through them all with you, yearning to see him.
पञ्चवर्षाण्यहं वीरं सत्यसन्धं धनंजयम्। यन्न पश्यामि बीभत्सुं तेन तप्ये वृकोदर
For five years I have not seen the truthful Dhananjaya, the terrible Bibhatsu; because of this, O Vrikodara, I am tormented.
तं वै श्यामं गुडाकेशं सिंहविक्रान्तगामिनम्। न पश्यामि महाबाहुं तेन तप्ये वृकोदर
I do not see that dark-complexioned, lotus-eyed one, who moves with the stride of a lion and has mighty arms; because of this, Bhima, I am tormented.
कृतास्त्रं निपुणं युद्देऽव्रतिमानं धनुष्मताम्। न पश्यामि कुरुश्रेष्ठ तेन तप्ये वृकोदर
I do not see that foremost of the Kurus, skilled in weapons, accomplished in battle, unrivaled among archers; because of this, Bhima, I am tormented.
चरन्तमरिसङ्घेषु क्रुद्धं कालमिवानघ। प्रभिन्नमिव मातङ्गं सिंहस्कन्धं धनंजयम्
I do not see Dhananjaya, moving among hosts of enemies, enraged like Time itself, with shoulders like a lion and charging like a maddened elephant.
यः स शक्रादनवरो वीर्येण च बलेन च। यमयोः पूर्वजः पार्थः श्वेताश्वोऽमितविक्रमः
That Partha, elder among the sons of Pandu, whose strength and valor are not less than Indra's, whose steeds are white and whose prowess is boundless—
नारायणसमो युद्धे सत्यसन्धो दृढव्रतः। तं ममापश्यतो भीम न शान्तिर्हृदयस्य वै
Equal to Narayana in battle, steadfast in truth, firm in his vows—when I do not see him, Bhima, my heart finds no peace.
दुःखेन महताऽऽविष्टश्चिन्तयामि दिवानिशम्। अजेयमुग्रधन्वानं तेन तप्ये वृकोदर
Overwhelmed by great sorrow, I think day and night of that unconquerable wielder of the fierce bow; because of this, Bhima, I am tormented.
सततं यः क्षमाशीलः क्षिप्यमाणोऽप्यणीयसा। ऋजुमार्गप्रपन्नस्य शर्मदाता भयस्य च
He who is always patient, even when provoked by the smallest slight, who walks the straight path and grants both protection and happiness—
स तु जिह्मप्रवृत्तस्य माययाऽभिजिघांसतः। अपि वज्रधरस्यापि भवेत्कालविषोपमः
Yet, against one who acts crookedly with deceitful intent, he becomes like the deadly poison of Time, even to the wielder of the thunderbolt.
शत्रोरपि प्रपन्नस्य सोऽनृशंसः प्रतापवान्। दाताऽभयस् बीभत्सुरमितात्मा महाहलः
Even to an enemy who seeks refuge, he is compassionate and glorious; Bibhatsu, of immeasurable soul and mighty arms, grants safety.
सर्वेषामाश्रयोऽस्माकं रणेऽरीणां प्रमर्दिता। आहर्ता सर्वरत्नानां सर्वेषां नः सुखावहः
He is the refuge of us all, the destroyer of foes in battle, the gatherer of all gems, and the bringer of happiness to us all.
रत्नानि यस्य वीर्येण दिव्यान्यासत्पुरा मम। बहूनि बहुजातीनि यानि प्राप्तः सुयोधनः
By his valor, Suyodhana once seized many divine and variously born gems that were formerly mine.
यस्य बाहुबलाद्वीर सभा चासीत्पुरा मम। सर्वरत्नमयी ख्याता त्रिषु लोकेषु पाण्डव
By the strength of his arms, O Pandava, my assembly hall was once famed throughout the three worlds as being adorned with every jewel.
वासुदेवसमं वीर्ये कार्तवीर्यसमं युधि। अजेयममितं युद्धे तं न पश्यामि फल्गुनम्
In valor equal to Vasudeva, in battle like Kartavirya, unconquerable and boundless in war—I do not see Phalguna.
संकर्षणं महावीर्यं त्वां च भीमापराजितम्। अनुयातः स्ववीर्येण वासुदेवं च शत्रुहा
Accompanied by the mighty Sankarshana, by you, Bhima, the undefeated, and by Vasudeva, the slayer of enemies, each by his own strength—
यस् बाहुबले तुल्यः प्रभावे च पुरंदरः। जवे वायुर्मुखे सोमः क्रोधे मृत्युः सनातनः
He whose arm-strength equals Indra, whose brilliance matches Purandara, whose speed is like the wind, whose speech is like Soma, and whose wrath is like eternal Death—
ते वयं तं नरव्याघ्रं सर्वेवीर दिदृक्षवः। प्रवेक्ष्यामो महाबाहो पर्वतं गन्धमादनम्
We all, O mighty-armed one, eager to see that tiger among men, will enter the Gandhamadana mountain.
विशाला बदरी यत्रनरनारायणाश्रमः। तं सदाऽध्युषितं यक्षैर्द्रक्ष्यामो गिरिसुत्तमम्
There is the vast Badari, where the hermitage of Nara and Narayana stands; always inhabited by Yakshas, we shall behold that supreme mountain.
कुबेरनलिनीं रम्यां राक्षसैरभिसेविताम्। पद्भिरेव गमिष्यामस्तप्यभाना महत्तपः
We shall go on foot to Kubera’s delightful Nalini, attended by Rakshasas, to behold the great ascetic who shines like the sun.
नातप्ततपसा शक्यो गन्तुं देशो वृकोदर। न नृशंसेन लुब्धेन नाप्रशान्तेन भारत
O Bhārata, this place, O Vṛkodara, cannot be reached by one who has not practiced austerity, nor by one who is cruel, greedy, or unrestrained.
तत्र सर्वेगमिष्यामो भीमार्जुपदैषिणः। सायुधा बद्धनिस्त्रिंशाः सार्धं विप्रैर्महाव्रतैः
There, all of us who follow Bhīma and Arjuna will go, armed and girded with swords, together with the great-vowed Brahmins.
मक्षिकादंशमशकान्सिंहान्व्याघ्रान्सरीसृपान्। प्राप्नोत्यनियतः पार्थ नियतस्तान्न पश्यति
O Pārtha, the undisciplined one encounters biting insects, flies, lions, tigers, and serpents; but the disciplined one does not see them.
ते वयं नियतात्मानः पर्वतं गन्धमादनम्। प्रवेक्ष्यामो मिताहारा धनंजयदिदृक्षवः
We, with controlled minds and moderate in food, desiring to see Dhanañjaya, will enter the Gandhamādana mountain.
द्रष्टारः पर्वताः सर्वे नद्यः सपुरकाननाः। तीर्थानि चैव श्रीमन्ति स्पृष्टं च सलिलं करैः
All the mountains, rivers with cities and forests, and the splendid holy fords, will be seen, and the waters touched with our hands.
पर्वतं मन्दरं दिव्यमेष पन्थाः प्रयास्यति। समाहीता निरुद्विग्नाः सर्वे भवत पाण्डवाः
This path will lead to the divine Mandara mountain; let all the Pāṇḍavas proceed, composed and free from anxiety.
