उशीरबीजं मैनाकं गिरिं श्वेतं च भारत। समतीतोऽसि कौन्तेय कालशैलं च पार्थिव
You have crossed the Uśīra mountain, Maināka, the white mountain, O Bhārata, and also Kālaśaila, O king.
एषा गङ्गा सप्तविधा राजते भरतर्षभ। स्थानं विरजसं पुण्यं यत्राग्निर्नित्यमिध्यते
Here shines the sevenfold Ganges, O best of the Bharatas; this is the pure and sacred place where the fire is always kindled.
एतद्वै मानुषेणाद्य न शक्यं द्रष्टुमद्भुतम्। समाधिं कुरुताव्यग्रास्तीर्थान्येतानि द्रक्ष्यथ
This wondrous sight cannot be seen by mortals today; remain undistracted in meditation, and you will behold these sacred places.
एतद्द्रक्ष्यसि देवानामाक्रीडं च रणाङ्कितम्। अतिक्रान्तोसि कौन्तेय कालशैलं च पर्वतम्
You will witness the playground of the gods, marked by battles; O son of Kunti, you have crossed the mountain called Kālaśaila.
श्वेतं गिरिं प्रवेक्ष्यामो मन्दरं चैव पर्वतम्। यत्र माणिवरो यक्षः कुबेरश्चैव यक्षराट्
We shall enter the white mountain and also Mandara, where the illustrious yaksha Maṇibhadra and Kubera, the lord of yakshas, reside.
अष्टाशीतिसहस्राणि गन्धर्वाः शीघ्रगामिनः। तथा किंपुरुषा राजन्यक्षाश्चैव चतुर्गुणाः
There are eighty-eight thousand swift-moving gandharvas, as well as royal kimpurushas and yakshas, four times as numerous.
अनेकरूपसंस्थाना नानाप्रहरणाश्च ते। यक्षेन्द्रं मनुजश्रेष्ठ माणिभद्रमुपासते
Of many forms and appearances, armed with various weapons, these worship Maṇibhadra, the king of yakshas, O best of men.
तेषामृद्धिरतीवात्र गतौ वायुसमाश्च ते। यक्षेन्द्रं मनुजश्रेष्ठ माणिभद्रमुपासते
Their prosperity here is immense, and their speed equals that of the wind; they worship Maṇibhadra, the king of yakshas, O best of men.
तैस्तात बलिभिर्गुप्ता यातुधानैश्च रक्षिताः। दुर्गमाः पर्वताः पार्थ समाधिं परमं कुरु
Protected by powerful beings and guarded by yātudhānas, these mountains are difficult to traverse, O Pārtha; attain supreme concentration.
कुबेरसचिवाश्चान्ये रौद्रा मैत्राश्च राक्षसाः। तैः समेष्याम कौन्तेय यत्तो विक्रमणे भव
Other ministers of Kubera, fierce and friendly rākṣasas, are there; we shall encounter them, O son of Kunti, be vigilant in your endeavor.
कैलासः पर्वतो राजन्पड्योजनशतोच्छ्रितः। यत्रदेवाः समायान्ति विशाला यत्र भारत
Kailāsa, the mountain, O king, rises a hundred yojanas high; there the gods assemble, and it is vast, O Bhārata.
असङ्ख्येयास्तु कौन्तेय यक्षराक्षसकिन्नराः। नागाः सुपर्णा गन्धर्वाः कुबेरसदनं प्रति
Countless yakshas, rākṣasas, kinnaras, nāgas, suparṇas, and gandharvas, O son of Kunti, go towards Kubera's abode.
तान्विगाहस्व पार्थाद्य तपसा च दमेन च। रक्ष्यमाणो मया राजन्भीमसेनबलेन च
Penetrate them, O Pārtha, today with austerity and self-restraint, protected by me, O king, and by Bhīmasena's strength.
स्वस्ति ते वरुणो राजा यमश्च समितिंजयः। गङ्गा च यमुना चैव पर्वताश्च दिशन्तु ते
May King Varuṇa, Yama the victorious, Gaṅgā and Yamunā, and the mountains grant you well-being.
मरुतश्च सहाश्विभ्यां सरितश्च सरांसि च। स्वस्ति देवासुरेभ्यश्च वसुभ्यश् महाद्युते
May the Maruts with the Ashvins, the rivers and lakes, and the gods, asuras, and vasus, O radiant one, grant you well-being.
इन्द्रस्य जाम्बूनदपर्वताद्वै शृणोमि घोषं तव देवि गङ्गे। गोपाययेमं सुभगे गिरिभ्यः सर्वाजमीढापचितं नरेन्द्रम्
From Indra's golden mountain I hear your sound, O goddess Gaṅgā; O fortunate one, protect this king, honored by all, from the mountains.
ददस्व शर्म प्रविविक्षतोऽस्य शैलानिमाञ्छैलसुते नृपस्य। `शिवप्रदा सर्वसरित्प्रधाने स भ्रातृकस्येह युधिष्ठिरस्य
Grant safety to this king as he seeks to cross these mountains, O daughter of the mountain; you bestow auspiciousness, chief among rivers, to Yudhiṣṭhira and his brothers here.
अपूर्वोऽयं संभ्रमो लोमशस्य कृष्णां च सर्वे रक्षत मा प्रमादः। देशो ह्ययं दुर्गतमो मतोऽस्य तस्मात्परं शौचमिहाचरध्वम्
This is an unprecedented agitation for Lomaśa; all of you, protect Kṛṣṇā, do not be careless. This place is considered most perilous, so maintain purity here.
ततोऽब्रवीद्भीममुदारवीर्यं कृष्णां यत्तः पालय भीमसेन। शून्येऽर्जुनेऽसन्निहिते च तात त्वामेव कृष्णा भजते भयेषु
Then Bhīma, of noble strength, spoke: 'Be vigilant, Bhīmasena, and protect Kṛṣṇā. When Arjuna is absent, O dear one, Kṛṣṇā turns to you in times of fear.'
ततो महात्मां स यमौ समेत्य मूर्धन्युपाघ्राय विमृज्यगात्रे। उवाच तौ बाष्पकलं स राजा मा बैष्टमागच्छतमप्रमत्तौ
Then the great-souled king approached the two sons of Yama, touched their heads and wiped their bodies, and spoke to them with tears in his voice: 'Do not fear, come forward, and remain attentive.'
अन्तर्हितानि भूतानि रक्षांसि बलवन्ति च। अग्निना तपसा चैव शक्यं गन्तुं वृकोदर
The beings and mighty demons that are hidden can be overcome, O Vṛkodara, by fire and by austerity.
सन्निवर्तय कौन्तेय क्षुत्पिपासे बलाश्रयात्। ततो बलं च दाक्ष्यं च संश्रयस्व वृकोदर
Restrain, O son of Kunti, the hunger and thirst that arise from bodily strength; then take refuge in your strength and skill, O Vṛkodara.
ऋषेस्त्वया श्रुतं वाक्यं कैलासं पर्वतं प्रति। बुद्ध्या प्रपश्य कौन्तेय कथं कृष्णा गमिष्यति
You have heard the sage’s words regarding Mount Kailāsa; consider with your intellect, O son of Kunti, how Kṛṣṇā will make the journey.
अथवा सहदेवेन धौम्येन च समं विभो। सूतैः पौरोगवैश्चैव सर्वैश्च परिचारकैः
Or else, O mighty one, together with Sahadeva and Dhaumya, with the charioteers, priests, and all the attendants—
रथैरश्वैश्च ये चान्ये विप्राः क्लेशासहाः पथि। सर्वैस्त्वं सहितो भीम निवर्तस्वायतेक्षण
With chariots, horses, and those other brāhmaṇas who can endure hardship on the path, you, Bhīma of mighty gaze, should turn back along with all of them.
त्रयो वयं गमिष्यामो लध्वाहारा यतव्रताः। अहं च नकुलश्चैव लोमशश्च महातपाः
We three will go, obtaining food as we can and observing vows: myself, Nakula, and Lomasha of great austerity.
ममागमनमाकाङ्क्षन्ग्गाद्वारे समाहितः। वसेह द्रौपदीं रक्षन्यावदागमनं मम
Awaiting my return at the entrance, with your mind composed, remain here, protecting Draupadī until I come back.
राजपुत्री श्रमेणार्ता दुःखार्ता चैव भारत। व्रजत्येव हि कल्याणी श्वेतवाहदिदृक्षया
The royal princess, afflicted by fatigue and sorrow, O Bhārata, still proceeds, longing to see the white horse.
तवचाप्यरतिस्तीव्रा वर्तते तमपश्यतः। गुडाकेशं महात्मानं संग्रामेष्वपलायिनम्। किं पुनः सहदेवं च मां च कृष्णां च भारत
Your intense longing persists as you do not see Guḍākeśa, the great-souled one who never flees in battle; what then of Sahadeva, myself, and Kṛṣṇā, O Bhārata?
द्विजाः कामं निवर्तन्तां सर्वे च परिचारकाः। सूताः पौरोगवाश्चैव यं च मन्येत नो भवान्
Let the brāhmaṇas and all the attendants turn back if they wish, as well as the charioteers and priests, and whomever else you think fit, O lord.
