On an auspicious day fit for sacrifice, Sharyati had a most excellent sacrificial altar constructed, abundant in all desired things.
There, Cyavana of the Bhrigu line officiated the sacrifice for the king; and wondrous events occurred there—listen to them from me.
At that time, Cyavana took the Soma for the Ashvins, the divine twins; but Indra tried to prevent him as he was offering them the Soma portion.
These two are not worthy of Soma, the Nasatyas—so I believe; they are the physicians of the gods in heaven, and thus do not deserve it by their actions.
Do not look down on these great souls, endowed with beauty and wealth, who made me, in the company of Madhu, as ageless as a child among the Vrindas.
Except for you, how could other gods be worthy of the Soma offering? The Ashvins too, O Indra, are gods—know this, O Purandara.
They are physicians, performers of tasks, able to assume any form at will, and move among mortals in the world—how can they be worthy of Soma here?
This was the very argument that Vasava repeated then; but disregarding Shakra, the descendant of Bhrigu offered the Soma portion.
When the Bhrigu was about to offer the supreme Soma to the Ashvins, seeing this, the mighty god Indra spoke these words:
If you yourself give the Soma to these two for a mortal, I will strike you with my thunderbolt, terrible and unmatched.
Thus addressed, the Bhrigu, smiling and gazing at Indra, duly offered the supreme Soma portion to the Ashvins.
Then Shachi's lord hurled his terrible thunderbolt at him; but as he struck, the Bhrigu paralyzed his arm.
Having paralyzed him, Cyavana, desiring to complete his task, invoked fire with mantras, intent on harming the god, his energy immense.
Then, by the power of the sage's asceticism, a being named Kritya was produced—Mada, of great strength, vast body, and a mighty asura.
His body, impossible to describe even by gods and demons, had a dreadful mouth with sharp, enormous teeth.
One jaw rested on the earth, the other reached the sky; four long fangs stretched a hundred yojanas each.
His other teeth measured ten yojanas, shaped like palace towers, resembling the tips of spears.
His two arms were massive like iron clubs, long and powerful; his eyes shone like the sun and moon, curved and blazing like the fire of destruction.
With a flickering, curved tongue like lightning, his mouth wide open, his gaze terrifying, he seemed to devour the world by force.
Enraged and about to consume, he rushed at Shatakratu, making the worlds resound with his dreadful form and mighty roar.
Seeing that terrifying face, the god Shatakratu became intoxicated, as he approached to devour, his mouth gaping like Death.
Out of fear, his arms froze, his lips kept licking; then the king of the gods, afflicted by terror, spoke to Cyavana.
From now on, O Bhargava, the Ashvins shall be entitled to Soma; this word is true, O sage, be gracious to me.
Let your undertaking not be in vain; this is the highest decree. I know, O sage, you will not act falsely.
Just as you have granted the Ashvins the right to Soma, O Brahman, so too should you grant me the highest benefit.
Once more, O Bhargava, let your power be revealed, so that the fame of Sukanya's father may spread throughout the world.
Therefore, I have arranged this display of your power; so grant me your favor, let it be as you wish.
Thus addressed by Shakra, the great Cyavana quickly let go of his anger and released Purandara.
The powerful sage divided the intoxication, O king, among drinking, women, dice, and hunting, again and again as before.
Then, having dispelled the intoxication and satisfied Shakra with Soma, he performed sacrifices with the Ashvins and the king.
