तरस्मात्त्वमत्र राजेनद्र भ्रातृभिः सहितोच्युत। उपस्पृश्य महीपाल धूतपाप्मा भविष्यसि
Therefore, O king, you too, together with your brothers, should bathe there; you will become purified of sin.
स पयोष्ण्यां नरश्रेष्ठः स्नात्वा वै भ्रातृभिः सह। वैदूर्यपर्वतं चैव नर्मदां च महानदीम्
Then, O best of men, after bathing at Payoshni with his brothers, he proceeded to the mountain of Vaidurya and the great river Narmada.
उद्दिश्य पाण्डवश्रेष्ठः स प्रतस्थे महीपतिः'। समागमत तेजस्वी भ्रातृभिः सहितो नघ
Aiming for those, O best of the Pandavas, the king set out, radiant, accompanied by his brothers.
तत्रास्य सर्वाण्याचख्यौ लोमशो भगवानृषिः। तीर्थानि रमणीयानि पुण्यान्यायतनानि च
There, the venerable sage Lomasha recounted to him all the sacred and beautiful holy places and shrines.
यथायोगं यथाप्रीति प्रययौ भ्रातृभिः सह। तत्रतत्राददद्वित्तं ब्राह्मणेभ्यः सहस्रशः
According to propriety and his pleasure, he went with his brothers, giving wealth to Brahmins by the thousands at each place.
देवानामेति कौन्तेय तथा राज्ञां सलोकताम्। वेदूर्यपर्वतं दृष्ट्वा नर्मदामवतीर्य च
O son of Kunti, seeing the mountain Vaidurya and descending to the Narmada, one attains the company of the gods and kings.
सन्धिरेष नरश्रेष्ठ त्रेताया द्वापरस्य च। एनमासाद्य कौन्तेय सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते
This, O best of men, is the meeting point of the Treta and Dvapara ages; upon reaching it, O son of Kunti, one is freed from all sins.
एष शर्यातियज्ञस्य देशस्तात प्रकाशते। साक्षाद्यत्रापिबत्सोममश्विभ्यां सह वासवः
This is the place, dear one, where the sacrifice of Sharyati is revealed, where Indra himself drank Soma with the Ashvins.
चुकोप भार्गवश्चापि महेन्द्रस् महातपाः। संस्तम्भयामास च तं वासवं च्यवनः प्रभुः
There, the great ascetic Bhargava grew angry, and the powerful Cyavana restrained Indra.
सुकन्यां चापि भार्यां स राजपुत्रीमवाप्तवान्। `नासत्यौ च महाभाग कृतवान्सोमपीथिवौ
He also obtained Sukanya, the royal maiden, as his wife, and the blessed Ashvins were granted a share of the Soma.
कथं विष्टम्भितस्तेन भगवान्पाकशासनः। किमर्थं भार्गवश्चापि कोपं चक्रे महातपाः
How was the lord of the gods restrained by him? And for what reason did the great ascetic Bhargava become angry?
नासत्यौ च कथं ब्रह्मन्कृतवान्सोमपीथिनौ। एतत्सर्वं यथावृत्तमाख्यातु भगवान्मम
And how, O Brahmin, did the Ashvins obtain a share of the Soma? Tell me all of this as it truly happened, O venerable one.
भृगोर्महर्षेः पुत्रोऽभूच्चयवनो नाम भारत। समीपे सरसस्तस्य तपस्तेपे महाद्युतिः
O Bharata, Cyavana, the son of the great sage Bhrigu, possessed immense brilliance and performed austerities near a lake.
स्थाणुभूतो महातेजा वीरस्थानेन पाण्डव। अतिष्ठत चिरं कालमेकदेशे विशांपते
That mighty ascetic, Pandava, stood unmoving in the posture of a hero for a long time in one place, O lord of the people.
सवल्मीकोऽभवदृषिर्लताभिरिव संवृतः। कालेन महता राजन्समाकीर्णः पिपीलिकैः
The sage became covered with anthills, enveloped by creepers, and over a long period, O king, was surrounded by ants.
तथा स संवृतो धीमान्मृत्पिण्ड इव सर्वशः। तप्यते स्म तपो घोरं वल्मीकेन समावृतः
Thus, the wise one, entirely covered like a lump of clay, continued to perform fierce austerities, enveloped by the anthill.
अथ दीर्घस्य कालस्य शर्यातिर्नाम पार्थिवः। आजगाम सरो रम्यं विहर्तुमिदमुत्तमम्
Then, after a long time, a king named Sharyati arrived at that beautiful lake to enjoy its supreme delights.
तस्य स्त्रीणां सहस्राणि चत्वार्यासन्परिग्रहः। एकैव च सुता सुभ्रूः सुकन्या नाम भारत
He had four thousand wives, O Bharata, and only one daughter with lovely brows named Sukanya.
सा सखीभिः परिवृता दिव्याभरणभूषिता। चङ्क्रम्यमाणा वल्मीकं भार्गवस्य समासदत्
Surrounded by her companions and adorned with divine ornaments, she wandered and approached the anthill of Bhrigu's descendant.
सा वै वसुमतीं तत्र पश्यन्ती सुमनोरमाम्। वनस्पतीन्प्रचिन्वन्ती विजहार सखीवृता
There, gazing upon the earth, delightful and beautiful, gathering forest flowers, she roamed with her friends.
रूपेण वयसा चैव भदनेन मदेन च। बभञ्ज वनवृक्षाणां शाखाः परमपुष्पिताः
With her beauty, youth, charm, and pride, she broke the branches of the forest trees, which were in full bloom.
तां सखीरहितामेकामेकवस्त्रामलंकृताम्। ददर्श भार्गवो धमांश्चरन्तीमिव विद्युतम्
The descendant of Bhrigu saw her alone, separated from her companions, adorned with a single garment, moving like a flash of lightning.
तां पश्यमानो विजने स रेमे परमद्युतिः। क्षामकण्ठश्च विप्रर्षिस्तपोबलसमन्वितः। तामाबभाषेकल्याणीं सा चास्य न शृणोति वै
Observing her in that solitary place, the ascetic of great splendor, thin-necked and endowed with the power of austerity, spoke to the auspicious girl, but she did not hear him.
ततः सुकन्या वल्मीके दृष्ट्वा भार्गवचक्षुषी। कौतूहलात्कण्टकेन बुद्धिमोहबलात्कृता। किंनु खल्विदमित्युक्त्वा निर्बिभेदास्य लोचने
Then Sukanya, seeing the Bhrigu descendant within the anthill, driven by curiosity and the force of bewilderment, said, 'What is this?' and pierced his eyes with a thorn.
अक्रुद्ध्यत्स तथा विद्धे नेत्रे परममन्युमान्। ततः शर्यातिसैन्यस्य शकृन्मूत्रे समावृणोत्
Though pierced thus in the eyes, he did not become angry, but full of wrath, he blocked the excretion and urine of Sharyati's army.
ततो रुद्धे शकृन्मूत्रे सैन्यमासीत्सुदुःखितम्। तथागतमभिप्रेक्ष्य पर्यपृच्छत्स पार्थिवः
With their excretion and urine obstructed, the army became greatly distressed; seeing this situation, the king inquired.
तपोनित्यस्य वृद्धस्य रोषणस्य विशेषतः। केनापकृतमद्येह भार्गवस्य महात्मनः। ज्ञातं वा यदि वाऽज्ञातं तद्द्रुतं ब्रूत माचिरम्
Who has offended the great-souled Bhrigu descendant, who is always devoted to austerity and especially prone to anger, whether knowingly or unknowingly? Tell me quickly and without delay.
तमूचुः सैनिकाः सर्वे न विद्मोऽपकृतं वयम्। सर्वोपायैर्यथाकामं भवांस्तदधिगच्छतु
All the soldiers replied, 'We do not know who has caused the offense. Let your Majesty discover it by any means you desire.'
ततः स पृथिवीपालः साम्ना चोग्रेण च स्वयम्। पर्यपृच्छत्सुहृद्वर्गं पर्यजानन्न चैव ते
Then the ruler of the earth himself questioned his circle of friends gently and harshly, but they did not know either.
आनाहार्तं ततो दृष्ट्वा तत्सैन्यमनुखार्दितम्। पितरं दुःखितं दृष्ट्वा सुकन्येदमथाब्रवीत्
Seeing the army suffering from constipation and his father distressed, Sukanya then spoke these words.
