What in all the worlds can withstand Krishna, among gods and men, armed, holding supreme arrows and the discus weapon, unmatched in battle?
Then, even if I am restrained, sword and shield in hand, by the Duryodhana's men, confused and deprived of their best warriors, let the earth be strewn with their bodies, like an altar covered with stakes at a sacrifice.
Let Gad, Ulmuka, Bahuka, Bhanu, Nitha, Shurashra, Nishatha, Kumara, Raṇotkata, Sāraṇa, Chārudeṣṇa—these warriors—display deeds befitting their lineage in battle.
Let the foremost warriors of the Vrishni, Bhoja, and Andhaka clans, gathered with the Satvata heroes, after slaying the sons of Dhritarashtra in battle, bring abundant fame to the world.
Then let Abhimanyu rule the earth as long as his vow lasts, O best among those who uphold dharma; let the great-souled Yudhishthira fulfill, as declared by the foremost of Kurus, what was agreed in the game.
Then, with arrows released by us, the conqueror of enemies, King Dharma, will enjoy the earth, cleared of Duryodhana's sons and slain sons of the charioteer; this, indeed, is our most glorious and proper task.
Without doubt, Madhava, this is true—your words I accept, for your spirit is undaunted. Yet the bull among the Kurus would never wish to seize unconquered earth by his own arms alone.
For Yudhishthira would never abandon his own duty, not for desire, nor fear, nor greed. Bhima and Arjuna are mighty chariot-warriors, as are the twin sons of Madri, and likewise Krishna, the daughter of Drupada.
Both Vrikodara and Dhananjaya are unmatched in battle upon the earth. Why then should not this one, supported by the sons of Madri, rule the entire world?
When the great-souled king of the Panchalas, the lord of the Kekayas, and we ourselves, all join together and fight valiantly in battle, then indeed no enemies would remain.
It is not surprising, Madhava, what you say. But for me, the protection of truth is dearer than kingship. Krishna alone knows me truly, and I know Krishna just as truly.
When the foremost of men, O Madhava, knows that the time for valor has come, then, O best of the Shinis, you and Keshava will conquer Suyodhana in battle.
Now, as the heroic Dasharhas depart, I see myself bereft of the lords of men. Be ever vigilant in righteousness, O immeasurable ones; I hope to see you all gathered together in happiness again.
Having thus taken leave of one another, offering respects, embracing the elders and all the children, the mighty Yadus returned to their own homes, and the others visited the sacred places.
After bidding farewell to the Vrishnis, the king of righteousness, along with the king of Vidarbha, went to the holy river Payoshni, accompanied by his brothers, servants, and Lomasha.
With his son Soma, he stayed by the waters of the Payoshni, mingled with milk. The great-souled one was praised with excellent hymns by joyful foremost Brahmins.
Here, O king, it is said that Indra, the lord of the gods, was satisfied by Gaya, the sacrificer, with soma, and, contented, he rejoiced.
Here, with the gods, Indra, and the lords of creatures, many great sacrifices of various kinds were performed, with abundant gifts.
Here, the king, whose dust had settled, satisfied the lord wielding the thunderbolt with soma in seven horse sacrifices.
In those seven sacrifices of his, all the articles were of gold—whatever objects were prescribed for the ritual, both for the forest-dweller and for the earth.
The sacrificial halls, posts, ladles, vessels, offering spoons, and cups—all these, and the sevenfold arrangements for his sacrifices, were renowned.
On each of the seven sacrificial posts, the halls were set above. In those sacrifices, the shining golden posts were raised up by the gods themselves, along with Indra, O Yudhishthira.
In those foremost sacrifices of Gaya, the lord of the earth, Indra rejoiced with soma, and the Brahmins with gifts.
The Brahmins received gifts, both countless and countable, in those sacrifices.
Just as sand on earth, or the stars in the sky, or the drops of rain that fall, are countless to anyone,
So too was the wealth, O great king, that Gaya gave to the officiants in those seven sacrifices—beyond reckoning.
What has been described here may be counted, but the gifts of that giver of gifts cannot be numbered.
He satisfied the Brahmins who had gathered from all directions with cows of gold, crafted by Vishvakarman.
The earth was left with only a few empty spaces, for it was filled everywhere with shrines by Gaya, the sacrificer, O lord of the people.
By that act, O Bharata, he attained the worlds of Indra; whoever bathes at Payoshni there attains his realm.
