She who was born from the sacrificial altar of the great king, the mighty chariot-warrior, at a prosperous sacrifice—how does this virtuous, pleasure-worthy lady endure such great suffering in the forest today?
How do these daughters of the foremost gods—of Vayu, Indra, or the Ashvins—worthy of happiness, now wander in the forest, deprived of comfort?
When the son of Dharma, with his wife, brothers, and followers, has been defeated and banished, and Duryodhana prospers, how does the earth, with her mountains, not sink down?
O Rama, this is not the time for lamentation; whatever is proper hereafter, let us all do. The time is not yet past, even if Yudhishthira says nothing.
Those who today have protectors in the world do not accomplish their tasks by themselves; in their affairs, protectors arise for them, like Shaibya and others for Yayati, O Rama.
For those whose protectors undertake their tasks in the world according to their own will, O Rama, those men, though having protectors, still experience hardship as if they had none.
Why do these two, Rama and Janardana, and Pradyumna and Samba, together with me, dwell in the forest with their kinsmen, while the sons of Pritha, deprived of the lordship of the three worlds, remain unapproached?
Let the army of the Dasharhas, adorned with many weapons and splendid armor, set out today; let the Dhartarashtras, with their kin, be destroyed, overcome by the strength of the Vrishnis.
If you, in anger, would envelop this earth, let the wielder of the Sharnga bow stand firm; let him strike down Duryodhana and his allies, as Mahendra, lord of the gods, slew Vritra.
He who is my brother, friend, and teacher, who is as dear to Janardana as his own self, and for whose sake Karna alone undertakes the irresistible weapon—
For whose sake men desire a noble son, disciple, and teacher without opposition; for whose sake the best among them rises up and performs the supreme, unimpeded deed—
Against him, I have repelled showers of weapons with supreme arms in battle, overcoming all; my body has been battered by arrows, fierce as serpents' venom and fire, O Rama.
With a sharp sword in battle, I will forcibly sever his head from his body; then I will slay all his followers, Duryodhana, and all the Kurus.
Let the sons of Bhima, filled with joy in battle, witness me here, O son of Rohini, armed and striking down alone the foremost Kurus, like a great fire at the end of time.
The weapons released by Pradyumna cannot be endured by Kripa, Drona, Vikarna, or Karna; you know the prowess of your son, and how the son of Krishna excels in battle.
Samba, with his arms, will overpower and subdue Duhshasana, along with his charioteer and chariot; none can withstand the son of Jambavati, fierce in battle.
By this youth, the army of the demon Shambara was suddenly routed; that wicked one was slain in battle single-handedly, unmatched in war, equal in valor to Hari.
With broad, long, and strong arms, he slew the horse-drawn chariot in battle; who, indeed, would approach Samba's chariot face-to-face in war?
Just as a man who enters the realm of Death at its appointed time does not return, so, entering his presence in battle, who would return alive?
Drona and Bhishma, those great chariot-warriors, surrounded by their sons and also Somadatta, all the armies—Vasudeva will consume them with a stream of arrow-fire.
What in all the worlds can withstand Krishna, among gods and men, armed, holding supreme arrows and the discus weapon, unmatched in battle?
Then, even if I am restrained, sword and shield in hand, by the Duryodhana's men, confused and deprived of their best warriors, let the earth be strewn with their bodies, like an altar covered with stakes at a sacrifice.
Let Gad, Ulmuka, Bahuka, Bhanu, Nitha, Shurashra, Nishatha, Kumara, Raṇotkata, Sāraṇa, Chārudeṣṇa—these warriors—display deeds befitting their lineage in battle.
Let the foremost warriors of the Vrishni, Bhoja, and Andhaka clans, gathered with the Satvata heroes, after slaying the sons of Dhritarashtra in battle, bring abundant fame to the world.
Then let Abhimanyu rule the earth as long as his vow lasts, O best among those who uphold dharma; let the great-souled Yudhishthira fulfill, as declared by the foremost of Kurus, what was agreed in the game.
Then, with arrows released by us, the conqueror of enemies, King Dharma, will enjoy the earth, cleared of Duryodhana's sons and slain sons of the charioteer; this, indeed, is our most glorious and proper task.
Without doubt, Madhava, this is true—your words I accept, for your spirit is undaunted. Yet the bull among the Kurus would never wish to seize unconquered earth by his own arms alone.
For Yudhishthira would never abandon his own duty, not for desire, nor fear, nor greed. Bhima and Arjuna are mighty chariot-warriors, as are the twin sons of Madri, and likewise Krishna, the daughter of Drupada.
Both Vrikodara and Dhananjaya are unmatched in battle upon the earth. Why then should not this one, supported by the sons of Madri, rule the entire world?
When the great-souled king of the Panchalas, the lord of the Kekayas, and we ourselves, all join together and fight valiantly in battle, then indeed no enemies would remain.
