When the sage welcomed him with due honor at the hermitage, he, intoxicated with the pride of battle, did not appreciate the hospitality.
Then, overpowering the hermitage by force, he seized the sacrificial cow, though she cried out, and broke great trees with his strength.
When Rāma returned, his father himself told him what had happened; seeing the cow weeping, anger seized Rāma, and, overcome by wrath, he pursued Kārtavīrya.
Then, in battle, Bhārgava, destroyer of enemy heroes, cut off Kārtavīrya's arms, which were like iron clubs, with sharp arrows.
Though he had a thousand arms and wielded a splendid bow, O king, he was overpowered by Rāma, who was united with the power of fate.
Then the heirs of Arjuna, filled with anger at Rāma, attacked Jamadagni in the hermitage when Rāma was absent.
They struck down that ascetic of great might, who fought on, crying out again and again, 'Rama! Rama!' like one without protector.
O Yudhishthira, the sons of Kartavirya, destroyers of foes, having slain Jamadagni with arrows, departed as they had come.
When they had gone and Jamadagni had thus perished, the son of Bhrigu, with sacrificial fuel in hand, came to the hermitage.
Seeing his father then, fallen under the sway of death, that hero, unworthy of such a fate, wept in deep sorrow.
Because of my fault, you have been slain, father, by those petty and childish sons of Kartavirya, like a deer in the forest pierced by arrows.
How, father, is such a death fitting for one who knows righteousness, who walks the noble path, and who is innocent among all beings?
What sin was not committed by those who, while you stood firm in austerity, struck you—an aged man, not fighting back—with hundreds of sharp arrows?
What will they shamelessly say among their counselors and friends, having slain, without shame, a single righteous man who did not fight back?
Lamenting thus in many ways, with great grief, O king, the great ascetic performed all the funeral rites for his father.
Rama, subduer of enemy cities, burned his father in fire and vowed to destroy all the Kshatriyas, O Bharata.
Enraged and exceedingly strong, that mighty one took up his weapon in battle and slew the sons of Kartavirya, like Death himself.
And all the Kshatriyas who followed them, O bull among Kshatriyas, Rama, foremost of warriors, struck down every one of them.
Thrice seven times did he make the earth free of Kshatriyas, and at Samantapanchaka he made five lakes of blood.
There, the best of the Bhrigu line offered libations to his ancestors; he saw Riciika directly, who then restrained Rama.
Then, with a great sacrifice, the mighty son of Jamadagni satisfied Indra and gave the earth to the officiating priests.
He also gave a golden altar to the great-souled Kashyapa, measuring ten vyamas in length and nine in height, O lord of men.
With Kashyapa's consent, the Brahmanas then divided it among themselves in portions; thus, O king, the renowned Khandavayana Brahmanas were established.
Having given the earth to the great-souled Kashyapa, he undertook intense austerity; that mighty and valiant one now dwells on this great mountain Mahendra.
Thus, enmity arose against him from the Kshatriyas and the dwellers of the world; and the earth too was conquered by Rama of immeasurable brilliance.
Then, on the fourteenth day, Rama of great mind, at the appointed time, revealed himself to those Brahmanas and to the righteous king with his brothers.
He, the lord, honored him, O king, together with his brothers; and the best of kings performed supreme worship for the Brahmanas.
Having appeased Jamadagni’s son and being honored by him, Mahendra, after spending that night, set out facing south.
As he went, the great-souled king beheld sacred and delightful pilgrimage sites, adorned everywhere by Brahmanas, and in some places, O Bharata, beautiful with the ocean.
Having performed the prescribed ablutions at those places, together with his younger brothers, the son and grandson of kings, the Pandava son of Parikshit went to the most sacred and renowned holy place by the sea.
