He embraced my body again, grasping my matted locks and bowing his curved form; placing his curved form against mine, he uttered a sound that filled me with joy.
He does not value the water for washing, nor the fruits I have brought; he said to me, 'This is my vow,' and gave me other new fruits.
The fruits I have eaten are not equal in taste to these; nor is their skin like these, nor do they have the essence that these possess.
He gave me water, exceedingly delicious, to drink, generous in form; drinking it, I felt even greater joy, and my body seemed to move.
These fragrant and wondrous garlands, woven with cloth, were scattered here by him as he departed, shining with ascetic power toward his hermitage.
With his departure, I became bewildered, and my body seemed to burn; I wish to go quickly to him, who is ever moving here.
I will go to him, dear one; what is that vow of celibacy he keeps? I wish to practice it with him, as he pursues austerity in noble conduct.
My heart desires to practice likewise, and my mind is troubled if I do not see him.
These beings, son, roam here, wondrous in form; possessing unmatched strength and beauty, they always contemplate ascetic austerity.
Those beautiful beings, dear one, entice with various means; they cause sages in the forests to fall from happiness and from the worlds, those fierce forms.
A sage who has mastered himself should not associate with those who, though seeking the worlds of the virtuous, indulge in pleasures after corrupting ascetics; a true ascetic should not even look upon those who behave wickedly.
My son, the acts performed by the unrighteous—such as drinking intoxicating liquors and wines, and wearing garlands with bright, fragrant scents—are not considered fitting for sages.
Then Vibhāṇḍaka, restraining his son with the words, 'These are dangers,' went out to hunt; after three days without success, he returned, weary.
When Kāśyapa again went to gather fruits in the hermitage according to custom, that courtesan once more went to entice the sage Ṛśyaśṛṅga.
Seeing her, Ṛśyaśṛṅga became delighted and, flustered, approached her; he said, 'Let us go for your relief, before my father returns.'
Then, O King, after bringing Kāśyapa's only son aboard and swiftly releasing the boat, they enticed him with various means and brought him near the lord of Aṅga.
After showing him the hermitage, they brought the boat, shining and splendid, to shore; taking him from there, the king established a wondrous forest called the Hermitage Grove.
The king settled that only son of Vibhāṇḍaka within the inner palace, and beheld the earth suddenly filled with rain clouds pouring forth water.
King Romapāda, his desires fulfilled, gave his daughter Śāntā to Ṛśyaśṛṅga, and as a gesture of appeasement, had cows dragged along the roads.
As Vibhāṇḍaka was coming, the king instructed the herdsmen and their strong cattle: 'If the great sage Vibhāṇḍaka, longing for his son, asks you anything—'
'You should, with joined palms, say to him: "These cattle and their driving belong to your son; what may please you, O great sage, let it be done— we are all your servants, bound to your command."'
Then the sage, his wrath fierce, returned to his hermitage with roots and fruits; not finding his son there, he became exceedingly angry.
Then, burning with anger and suspecting the king's involvement, he set out for Campā, intending to burn the city, its king, and the entire realm.
Weary and hungry, Kāśyapa came upon prosperous cattle stations; honored by the herdsmen as befits a king, he spent that night there.
Receiving great hospitality and filled with joy, he asked, 'Whose renowned herdsmen are you?' They all approached and replied, 'This wealth is yours, destined for your son.'
Honored in every land, hearing their sweet words, his anger greatly appeased, he joyfully approached the lord of Aṅga, who came to meet him.
Honored by that foremost of men, he saw his son, radiant as a god in heaven, and there he saw his daughter-in-law Śāntā, shining like a lightning flash.
Seeing the villages, cattle stations, and his son's wife Śāntā, Vibhāṇḍaka's anger was calmed, and he bestowed his full favor upon the king, O ruler of men.
There, having placed his son, the great sage—whose brilliance was equal to that of the sun and fire—said: 'When a son is born, you should return to the forest, having fulfilled all the king's cherished wishes.'
He did as he was told, O king, and Rishyasringa went to where his father was; and Shanta served him, favorably disposed, just as Rohini serves the Moon.
