Having spoken thus, the unwavering son of Mitra and Varuṇa, in anger, drank up the ocean before the eyes of all beings.
Seeing the ocean being drunk, the gods along with Indra were filled with utmost wonder and honored him with praises.
You are our protector and creator, O sustainer of the worlds; by your grace, may the universe with the immortals never come to destruction.
Thus worshipped by the gods, the great-souled one, as the Gandharvas played their instruments on all sides and divine flowers were showered upon him, made the great ocean devoid of water.
Seeing the great ocean made dry, all the gods were supremely delighted; seizing their divine and excellent weapons, they attacked the Dānavas with undaunted hearts.
Assailed by the gods—great-souled, mighty, swift, and roaring—the Dānavas could not withstand the force of those powerful beings.
Assailed by the gods, the Dānavas, with terrifying cries, waged a tumultuous battle for a moment, O Bhārata.
Previously scorched by the asceticism of self-controlled sages, though striving with all their might, they were destroyed by the gods.
Adorned with golden ornaments, wearing earrings and armlets, the slain Dānavas shone like blossoming kimshuka trees.
Some of the surviving Kāleyas, O best of men, after rending the earth, took refuge in the nethermost regions.
Seeing the Dānavas slain, the gods and the foremost of sages praised him with various words and spoke this speech.
By your grace, O mighty-armed one, the worlds have attained great happiness; and by your power, the cruel and valiant Kāleyas have been destroyed.
Refill the ocean, O mighty-armed, sustainer of the worlds; release again into it the water you have drunk.
Thus addressed, the divine sage, foremost among ascetics, replied to the assembled gods along with Indra.
That water has become old; another means should be considered by you, who are steadfast, for the purpose of filling the ocean.
Hearing the words of the great sage, whose mind was noble, the gods together became astonished and disheartened.
After mutually taking leave and bowing to the eminent sage, all the beings, O great king, departed as they had come.
The gods, together with Vishnu, approached the grandsire, repeatedly consulting about the means to fill the ocean.
They, the gods, along with Vishnu, came to the Creator and, with hands joined in reverence, all spoke of the ocean's replenishment.
Brahma, the grandsire of the worlds, addressed them as they had assembled, comforting the gods with a voice deep as thunder.
Go, all you gods, as you desire, as you wish; in due time, by the force of destiny, the ocean will return to its natural state.
King Bhagiratha, having made his kinsmen the cause, will fill the ocean with streams of water, the repository of waters.
Hearing the words of the grandsire, all the foremost gods departed as they had come, awaiting the destined time.
O Brahman, how were the kinsmen involved, and what was the cause here, O sage? How was the ocean filled by Bhagiratha's effort?
I wish to hear this in detail, O possessor of austerity, as you recount the excellent deeds of the kings.
Thus addressed by the great-souled Dharmaraja, the foremost Brahmin began to narrate the greatness of Sagara, the illustrious one.
Born in the lineage of the Ikshvakus was a king named Sagara, endowed with beauty, strength, and valor, yet childless and mighty.
He, O Bharata, after subduing the Haihayas and the Talajanghas, and bringing the royal clans under his control, established his own sovereignty.
His wives, O best of Bharatas, were Vaidehi, proud of their beauty and youth, and Shaivya, O bull among Bharatas.
Desiring a son, the king performed great austerity together with his wives, O king, taking refuge on Mount Kailasa.
