Thereafter, the gods approached the sage dwelling in his hermitage, the ascetic foremost among upholders of righteousness, Agastya, blazing with extraordinary power, and together they spoke to him of their purpose.
The king of mountains, Vindhya, overcome by anger, is obstructing the path of the sun and moon, and likewise the course of the stars.
No one else, O best of twice-born, is able to restrain him; except for you, O highly fortunate one, therefore restrain him.
Hearing the words of the gods, the sage approached the mountain, and, having come near with his wife, addressed Vindhya.
O best of mountains, I desire a path to be given by you; I wish to go southward for a certain purpose.
Until my return, you must remain as you are; when I have come back, O lord of mountains, then you may grow as you wish.
Thus having made this agreement with Vindhya, O subduer of foes, even today the sage of the Varuna lineage has not returned from the southern region.
Vindhya too, out of fear, does not grow, his form bent, by the power of Agastya—this you have asked me.
Just as the Kāleyas were destroyed by all the gods, O king, having obtained a boon from Agastya, hear that from me as I recount it.
Hearing the words of the gods, the son of Mitra and Varuṇa spoke: 'For what purpose have you come? What boon do you desire from me?'
Thus addressed by him, the gods spoke to the sage, all with joined palms, with Purandara at their head.
By you, the great-souled one, the task has been accomplished, for the great ocean was being drunk; then we shall slay, along with their followers, those haters of the gods, sent forth by Time.
Hearing the words of the gods, the sage replied, 'So be it; I shall fulfill your wish and bring great happiness to the worlds.'
Having spoken thus, he went to the ocean, lord of rivers, together with ascetics accomplished in austerity and with the gods, O virtuous one.
Men, serpents, gandharvas, yakṣas, and kimpuruṣas likewise followed the great-souled one, desiring to witness that wondrous event.
Then they all approached the ocean together, whose depths inspire fear, whose waves seemed to dance, and whose waters leapt as if stirred by the wind.
With waves like foam seeming to laugh, tumbling through the ravines, teeming with fierce aquatic creatures, and filled with flocks of diverse birds.
The gods, together with Agastya, and the great Gandharvas and mighty serpents, as well as the highly fortunate sages, gathered at the great ocean.
Having reached the ocean, the divine sage, son of Varuṇa, addressed the assembled gods and sages.
For the welfare of the worlds, I shall drink up the abode of Varuṇa; whatever is to be done by you, let it be arranged quickly.
Having spoken thus, the unwavering son of Mitra and Varuṇa, in anger, drank up the ocean before the eyes of all beings.
Seeing the ocean being drunk, the gods along with Indra were filled with utmost wonder and honored him with praises.
You are our protector and creator, O sustainer of the worlds; by your grace, may the universe with the immortals never come to destruction.
Thus worshipped by the gods, the great-souled one, as the Gandharvas played their instruments on all sides and divine flowers were showered upon him, made the great ocean devoid of water.
Seeing the great ocean made dry, all the gods were supremely delighted; seizing their divine and excellent weapons, they attacked the Dānavas with undaunted hearts.
Assailed by the gods—great-souled, mighty, swift, and roaring—the Dānavas could not withstand the force of those powerful beings.
Assailed by the gods, the Dānavas, with terrifying cries, waged a tumultuous battle for a moment, O Bhārata.
Previously scorched by the asceticism of self-controlled sages, though striving with all their might, they were destroyed by the gods.
Adorned with golden ornaments, wearing earrings and armlets, the slain Dānavas shone like blossoming kimshuka trees.
Some of the surviving Kāleyas, O best of men, after rending the earth, took refuge in the nethermost regions.
