स बाल एवतेजस्वी पितुस्तस्य निवेशने। इध्मानां भारमाजह्रे इध्मवाहस्ततोऽभवत्
Even as a child, he was brilliant, dwelling in his father's abode. He carried loads of firewood, and thus became known as Idhmavaha.
तथायुक्तं तु तं दृष्ट्वा मुमुदे स मुनिस्तदा। एवं स जनयामास भारतापत्यमुत्तमम्। लेभिरे पितरश्चास्य लोकान्राजन्यथेप्सितान्
Seeing him thus engaged, the sage rejoiced. Thus he produced an excellent offspring, O Bharata. His ancestors attained the worlds they desired, like kings.
अगस्त्यस्याश्रमश्चायमत ऊर्ध्वं विशांपते। ख्यातो भुवि महाराज तेजसा तस्य धीमतः
This is Agastya's hermitage, O lord of people, renowned on earth, O great king, for the brilliance of that wise one.
प्राह्लादिरेवं वातापिर्ब्रह्मघ्नो दुष्टचेतनः। एवं विनाशितो राजन्नगस्त्येन महात्मना। तस्यायमाश्रमो राजन्रमणीयैर्गुणैर्युतः
Thus Prahlada's descendant, Vatapi, the slayer of Brahmins and wicked-minded, was destroyed by the great-souled Agastya, O king. This hermitage of his, O king, is endowed with delightful qualities.
एषा भागीरथी पुण्या देवगन्धर्वसेविता। वातेरिता पताकेव विराजति नभस्तले
Here is the sacred Bhagirathi, attended by gods and gandharvas; she shines in the sky, driven by the wind, like a banner.
प्रतार्यमाणा कूटेषु यथा निम्नेषु नित्यशः। शिलातलेषु संत्रस्ता पन्नगेन्द्रवधूरिव
Constantly dashed against rocks and descending into hollows, she trembles upon stone surfaces like the wife of the serpent king in fear.
दक्षिणां वै दिशं सर्वां प्लावयन्ती च मातृवत्। पूर्वं शंभोर्जटाभ्रष्टा समुद्रमहिषी प्रिया। अस्यां नद्यां मुपुण्यायां यथेष्टमवगाह्यताम्
Flooding the entire southern direction like a mother, she, once fallen from Shambhu's matted hair, is the beloved queen of the ocean; in this holy river, bathe as you desire.
युधिष्ठिर निबोधेदं त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतम्। भृगोस्तीर्थं महाराज महर्षिगणसेवितम्
Yudhishthira, listen to this renowned in the three worlds: the holy place of Bhrigu, O great king, attended by hosts of great sages.
यत्रोपस्पृष्टवान्रामो हृतंतेजस्तदाप्तवान्। अत्र त्वंभ्रातृभिः सार्धं कृष्णया चैव पाण्डव
Here, Rama, having bathed, regained the energy that had been taken from him; here, together with your brothers and Krishna, O Pandava,
दुर्योधनहृतंतेजः पुनरादातुमर्हसि। कृतवैरेण रामेण यथा कचोपहृतं पुनः
You should recover the energy taken by Duryodhana, just as Rama, after enmity, recovered what had been taken from him, like Kacha.
स तत्रभ्रातृभिश्चैव कृष्णया चैव पाण्डवः। स्नात्वा देवान्पितॄंश्चैव तर्पयामास भारत
There, together with his brothers and Krishna, the Pandava bathed and offered oblations to the gods and ancestors, O Bharata.
तस्य तीर्थस्य रूपं वै दीप्ताद्दीप्ततरं बभौ। अप्रवृष्यतरश्चासीच्छात्रवाणां नरर्षभ
The appearance of that holy place shone even brighter than the brightest, and it was more rainless than the land of enemies, O bull among men.
अपृच्छच्चैव राजेन्द्र लोमशं पाण्डुनन्दनः। भगवन्किमर्थं रामस्य हृतमासीद्वपुः प्रभो। कथं प्रत्याहृतंचैव एतदाचक्ष्व पृच्छतः
Then the son of Pandu asked Lomasha, 'Revered one, for what reason was Rama's energy taken, and how was it regained? Tell me this as I ask.'
शृणु रामस्य राजेन्द्र भार्गवस्य च धीमतः। जातो दशरथस्यासीत्पुत्रो रामो महात्मनः
Hear, O king, of Rama, the wise descendant of Bhrigu: to Dasharatha was born a son, Rama, of great soul.
विष्णुः स्वेन शरीरेण रावणस्य वधाय वै। पश्यामस्तमयोध्यायां जातं दाशरथिं ततः
Vishnu himself, in his own body, was born in Ayodhya as Dasharatha's son for the slaying of Ravana.
ऋचीकनन्दनो राभो भार्गवो रेणुकासुतः। तस् दाशरथेः श्रुत्वा ररामस्याक्लिष्टकर्मणः
Rama, son of Rcika, descendant of Bhrigu, son of Renuka, heard of the spotless deeds of Dasharatha's son Rama.
कौतूहलान्वितो रामस्त्वयोध्यामगमत्पुनः। जिज्ञासमानो रामस्य वीर्यं दाशरथेस्तदा
Filled with curiosity, Rama went again to Ayodhya, wishing to know the strength of Dasharatha's son at that time.
तं वै दशरथः श्रुत्वा वियान्तमुपागतम्। प्रेषयामास रामस्य रामं पुत्रं पुरस्कृतम्
Hearing that he was coming, Dasharatha sent his son Rama, accompanied by others, to meet him.
स तमभ्यागतं दृष्ट्वा उद्यतास्त्रमवस्थितम्। प्रहसन्निव कोन्तेय रामो वचनमब्रवीत्
Seeing him approach, armed and ready, Rama, O son of Kunti, spoke these words with a smile.
कृतकालं हि राजेन्द्र धनुरेतन्मया विभो। समारोपय यत्नेन यदि शक्नोषि पार्तिव
'Here is a bow prepared at the proper time, O king; string it with effort, if you are able, O ruler of men.'
इत्युक्तस्त्वाह भगवंस्त्वं नाधिक्षेप्तुमर्हसि। नाहमप्यधमो धर्मे क्षत्रियाणां द्विजातिषु। इश्र्वाकूणां विशेषेण बाहुवीर्ये न कत्थनम्
Thus addressed, the revered one replied, 'You should not challenge me; nor am I inferior in the dharma of kshatriyas or brahmins, especially among the Ikshvakus, nor do I boast of strength in arms.'
तमेवं वादिनं तत्र रामो वचनमब्रवीत्। अलं वै व्यपदेशेन धनुरायच्छ राघव
To him thus speaking, Rama said, 'Enough of words; string the bow, O descendant of Raghu.'
ततो जग्राह रोषेण क्षत्रियर्षभमूदनम्। रामो दाशरथिर्दिव्यं हस्ताद्रामस्य कार्मुकम्
Then, filled with anger, Rāma, son of Daśaratha and foremost among warriors, seized the divine bow from Rāma Jāmadagnya.
धनुरारोपयामास सलील इव भारत। ज्याशब्दमकरोच्चैव स्मयमानः स वीर्यवान्। तस्य शब्दस् भूतानि वित्रसन्त्यशनेरिव
He strung the bow, O Bhārata, with ease, and, smiling in his strength, made the bowstring resound; at that sound, all beings trembled as if at the end of the world.
अथाब्रवीत्तदा रामो रामं दाशरथिस्तदा। इदमारोपितं ब्र्हमन्किमन्यत्करवाणि ते
Then Rāma, son of Daśaratha, spoke to Rāma Jāmadagnya: 'The bow is strung, Brāhmaṇa. What else would you have me do?'
तस्य रामो ददौ दिव्यं जामदग्न्यो महात्मनः। शरमाकर्णदेशान्तमयमाकृष्यतामिति
To him, Rāma Jāmadagnya of great soul gave a divine arrow, saying, 'Draw this arrow to your ear and release it.'
एतच्छ्रुत्वाऽब्रवीद्रामः प्रदीप्त इव मन्युना। श्रूयते क्षम्यते चैव दर्पपूर्णोसि भार्गव
Hearing this, Rāma replied, his mind blazing with wrath: 'You are famed for patience, yet you are full of pride, Bhārgava.'
त्वया ह्यधिगतं तेजः क्षत्रियेभ्यो विशेषतः। पितामहप्रसादेन तेन मां क्षिपसि ध्रुवम्। पश्य मां स्वेन रूपेण चक्षुस्ते वितराम्यहम्
'The power you have gained, especially over kṣatriyas, is by your grandsire's grace; for this reason, you challenge me. Now behold me in my true form—I will grant you vision.'
ततो रामशरीरे वै रामः पश्यति भार्गवः। आदित्यान्सवसून्रुद्रान्साध्यांश्च समरुद्गणान्
Then, within Rāma's body, Bhārgava Rāma beheld the Ādityas, Vasus, Rudras, Sādhyas, and all the hosts of Maruts.
पितरो हुताशनश्चैव नक्षत्राणि ग्रहास्तथा। गन्धर्वा राक्षसा यक्षा नद्यस्तीर्थानि यानि च
He saw the ancestors, the fire-god, the stars and planets, Gandharvas, Rākṣasas, Yakṣas, rivers, and all the sacred fords.
