प्राप्य भार्यामगस्त्यस्तु लोपामुद्रामभाषत। महार्हाण्युत्सृजैतानि वासांस्याभरणानि च
Having received his wife, Agastya spoke to Lopamudra: 'Abandon these costly garments and ornaments.'
ततः सा दर्शनीयानि महार्हाणि तनूनि च। समुत्ससर्ज रम्भोरूर्वसनान्यायतेक्षणा
Then she, with thighs like a plantain stem and eyes like a doe, discarded her splendid garments and ornaments.
ततश्चीराणि जग्राह वल्कलान्यजिनानि च। समानव्रतचर्या च बभूवायतलोचना
Then she took up garments of bark, deer skins, and ascetic attire, and, with wide eyes, undertook the same vows and practices.
गङ्गाद्वारमथागम्य भगवानृषिसत्तमः। उग्रमातिष्ठत तपः सह पत्न्याऽनुकूलया
Having come to the gateway of the Ganga, the venerable and foremost sage, together with his devoted wife, engaged in severe austerities.
सा प्रीत्या बहुमानाच्च पतिं पर्यचरत्तदा। अगस्त्यश्च परां प्रीतिं भार्यायामगमत्प्रभुः
With affection and great respect, she served her husband at that time, and Agastya, the lordly sage, attained supreme delight in his wife.
ततो बहुतिथे काले लोपामुद्रां विशांपते। तपसा द्योतितां स्नातां ददर्श भगवानृषिः
Then, after much time had passed, O lord of men, the venerable sage beheld Lopamudra, radiant from her austerities and purified by bathing.
स तस्याः परिचारेण शौचेन च दमेन च। श्रिया रूपेण च प्रीतो मैथुनायाजुहाव ताम्
Pleased by her service, purity, self-restraint, splendor, and beauty, he invited her to union.
ततः सा प्राञ्जलिर्भूत्वा लज्जमानेव भामिनी। तदा सप्रणयं वाक्यं भगवन्तमथाब्रवीत्
Then she, with joined palms and seeming bashfulness, spoke these affectionate words to the venerable one.
असंशयं प्रजाहेतोर्भार्यां पतिरविन्दत। पा तु त्वयि मम प्रीतिस्तामृषे कर्तुमर्हसि
Surely, a husband takes a wife for the sake of offspring; my affection for you is steadfast—O sage, you ought to fulfill it.
यथा पितुर्गृहे विप्र प्रासादे शयनं मम। तथाविधे त्वं शयने मामुपैतुमिहार्हसि
O Brahmin, just as my bed was in my father's palace, so should you approach me here in a bed of that kind.
इच्छामि त्वां स्रग्विणं च भूषणैश्च विभूषितम्। उपसर्तुं यथाकामं दिव्याभरणभूषिता
I wish to approach you adorned with garlands and ornaments, as I desire, and you likewise adorned with divine jewels.
अन्यथा नोपतिष्ठेयं चीरकाषायवासिनी। नैवापवित्रो विप्रर्षे भूषणोयं कथंचन
Otherwise, I would not approach you while wearing bark garments; nor, O sage, is it ever improper for you to wear ornaments.
न ते धनानि विद्यन्ते लोपामुद्रे तथा मम। यथाविधानि कल्याणि पितुस्तव सुमध्यमे
O Lopamudra, I do not possess such wealth, nor do you, as was proper in your father's house, O slender-waisted one.
ईशोसि तपसा सर्वं समाहर्तुं तपोधन। क्षणेन जीवलोके यद्वसु किंचन विद्यते
O possessor of austerity, you are able by your penance to acquire all things in the world in a moment, whatever wealth exists among living beings.
एवमेतद्यथाऽऽत्थ त्वं तपोव्ययकरं तु तत्। यथा तु मे न नश्येत तपस्तन्मां प्रयोदय
It is just as you say; but the expenditure of austerity is involved. Guide me so that my austerity is not lost.
अल्पावशिष्टः कालोऽयमृतोर्मम तपोधन। न चान्यथाऽहमिच्छामि त्वामुपैतुं कथंचन
Little time remains for my vow, O possessor of austerity, and in no other way do I wish to approach you.
न चापि धर्ममिच्छामि विलोप्तुं ते कथंचन। एवं तु मे यथाकामं संपादयितुमर्हसि
Nor do I wish, in any way, to violate your righteousness; yet you ought to fulfill my desire in this manner.
यद्येष काम सुभगे तव बुद्ध्या विनिश्चितः। हर्तुं गच्छाम्यहं भद्रे चर काममिह स्थिता ।। आरस्ते तेजस्विनी कन्या रोहिणीव दिविप्रभा
If this desire, O fortunate one, is firmly settled in your mind, then I shall go to obtain it. Remain here as you wish. The radiant maiden shone like Rohini among the stars.
ततो जगाम कौरव्य सोऽगस्त्यो भिक्षितुं वसु। श्रुतर्वाणं महीपालं यं वेदाभ्यधिकं नृपैः
Then Agastya went to seek wealth, O Kauravya, to king Shrutarvan, whom the kings esteemed above the Vedas.
स विदित्वा तु नृपतिः कुम्भयोनिमुपागतम्। विषयान्ते सहामात्यः प्रत्यगृह्णात्सुसत्कृतम्
The king, knowing that Kumbhayoni had arrived, went with his ministers to the border of his realm and received him with great honor.
तस्मै चार्घ्यं थान्यायमानीय पृथिवीपतिः। प्राञ्जलिः प्रयतो भूत्वापप्रच्छागमनेऽर्थिताम्
To him, the lord of the earth brought the customary offering and, joining his palms and with devotion, inquired about the reason for his visit.
वित्तार्थिनमनुप्राप्तं विद्धि मां पृथिवीपते। थाशक्त्यविहिंस्यान्यान्संविभागं प्रयच्छ मे
Know me, O lord of the earth, as one who has come seeking wealth; grant me, according to your ability and without harming others, a share.
तत आयव्ययौ पूर्णो तस्मै राजा न्यवेदयत्। अतो विद्वन्नुपादत्स्व यदत्रव्यतिरिच्यते
Then the king, having shown the full account of income and expenditure, said to him: 'O learned one, take for yourself whatever here is surplus.'
तत आयव्ययौ दृष्ट्वा समौ सममतिर्द्विजः। सर्वथा प्राणिनां पीडामुपादानादमन्यत
Then, seeing the income and expenditure as equal, the twice-born, with impartial mind, considered that taking anything would cause suffering to living beings.
स श्रुतर्वाणमादाय ब्रध्नश्वमगमत्ततः। स च तौ विषयस्यान्ते प्रत्यगृह्णाद्यथाविधि
He then went to Bradhnaśva, taking Śrutarvāṇa with him; and Bradhnaśva, at the border of his realm, received them according to custom.
तयोरर्ध्यं च पाद्यं च ब्रध्नश्वः प्रत्यवेदयत्। अनुज्ञाप्यच पप्रच्छ प्रयोजनमुपक्रमे। `वद कामं मुनिश्रेष्ठ धन्योस्म्यागमनेन ते
Bradhnaśva offered them water for washing feet and for sipping, and after granting them permission, asked the purpose of their visit at the outset: 'Speak your wish, O best of sages; I am blessed by your coming.'
वित्तकामाविह प्राप्तौ विद्ध्यावां पृथिवीपते। यथाशक्त्यविहिंस्यान्यान्संविभागं प्रयच्छ नौ
Know us, O lord of the earth, as having come here desiring wealth; grant us, according to your ability and without harming others, a share.
तत आयव्ययौ पूर्णौ ताभ्यां राजा न्यवेदयत्। अतो ज्ञात्वा तु गृह्णीतं यदत्रव्यतिरिच्यते
Then the king, having shown them the full account of income and expenditure, said: 'Knowing this, take whatever here is surplus.'

पौरुकुत्सं ततो जग्मुस्त्रसदस्युं महाधनम्। अगस्त्यश्च श्रुतर्वा च ब्रध्नश्वश्च महीपतिः
Then Agastya, Śrutarvā, and King Bradhnaśva went to Paūrukutsa, the wealthy Trasadasyu.
